Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

Anyone want to share what was the killer system back in the day? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

When I bought my first 69 Camaro over 20 years ago, it had a Craig stereo system in it. Still have the rear Craig speakers.

Muntz system...
you got the tape player with auto reverse..cutting edge I might add..a little amp I think it was 60 watts x 2 ??? cant recall but it worked the system just right...speakers were 2-6" round & 2-6X9's for the back rocked pretty good for early 70's stuff https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

In my 63.5 Galaxie 500 I had a Jensen R-430 head unit/amp combo. It was the top of the line stuff from them in the early 80's. Jensen coax 6x9's, and 4.5 surface mount laying near drivers heels. It absolutely pounded Pink Floyd Animals and Scorpions Lovedrive, UFO Strangers...... I mean the rear view mirror would shake so much everything looked like smeared vertical lines. It was the start of a very long love affair with audio I still have today.

Pioneer SuperTuner!!!Same here!! I had 6x9's in real walnut, made by me in h/s woodshop boxes. I had long speaker wires and could put them in the bed while at the park. My vehicle was a '56 F100 'Vette yellow with a '57 T-bird 312 with blower heads and Isky RPM 300 cam. Forgot best part..was bored to take 4" SBC pistons.

Sam, you took the words right out of my mouth. Mine had the round radio tuning face and was mounted under-dash. I even made a wood panel in shop class to replace the stock package tray.

Ahh, makes me want to play Misty Mountain Hop...

Not quite vintage enough for a lot of guys here, though - the SuperTuner wasn't introduced until 1976! That Round dial was bigger than the height of the radio. Mine had cassette too, it was stolen out of my Nova while I was out drinking a few beers -- errr, while I was working late one night!

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

I remember a few different systems. One was a Clarion with a slide dial (no digital yet) and Jensen 4X6 and 6X9 speakers. Another car had a Kenwood head unit with Archer/Radio Shack speakers....those were the days.

Darren,
I wish there WAS a radio in mine! (NOT) You know how boring it is to cruise the streets looking for that purple Hemi Cuda and have to settle for the the sound of 2 1/4" Hookers and me trying to sing, "Burn-up that quarter mile" by Jan & Dean??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Craig Pionier 8 track in my '70 MG Midget. Someone tried to steal it in the lot at the apartment complex in Norfolk when I was in the Navy, but I had it stalled with "secret" screws so they didn't get it. Not much room in that car for tapes, but Jefferson airplane and Vanilla Fudge were always with me. I still have those tapes.

I can't remember who made this unit. But, my brother had an in dash recordable cassette player with mic in his 71 Z/28. That was in 1975 I believe. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Concord Car audio with cassette deck (had a knob that you could vary the speed of the tape. It also had a built in equalizer and loudness button. I can't believe I took a picture of it...even worse, I can't believe I still have it!

It was expensive in 1980/81? at about $300 just for the tuner... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif That's how I started my credit...6 easy payments of ~$50.

Here's what it looked like:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...tn_concord.jpg

For speakers I had Jensen 6x9 Triax II's in back and 4 inch up front (Later switched to the early Infinity Kappa seperates (the poly clear ones).

I still have the Concord deck...somewhere in the garage.

I personally have always enjoyed the quiet, soothing sounds of a factory radio delete plate. But then again, every time I hear a Judas Priest song, I can't help but think about my best buddy's '70 LS6 Chevelle in high school with a Pioneer Super Tuner sliding around the passenger floor board so as not to cut the stock dash. Most certainly the best of times and you never realize it while it's happening.

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

My '56 Corvette still sports its Realistic 8-track under the dash, but get this: a Bradford (W.T. Grant)FM conversion unit that slides into the 8-track to give you FM radio. It still works perfectly in fact I have been driving this car this fall and listening to it just like I did at age 17. My old lacquer job (1974) is falling off but you can't see that when your're behind the wheel. The 4:56's are getting a bit much with the Corvette side pipes tucked up behind the rockers, might look for a 3:70 center section. How about this for a thrill: drove by a high school girlfriends parents house last Sunday, she happened to be in town and out front of the house, I pulled in driveway and they looked as if I was driving a spaceship, totally freaked them out, that Corvette had not shook the windows on that house for 30 years, we had a great laugh and a little tears too. I think I got her with the car in the first place.

I know the feeling George. This summer I drove my '62 '09 to my old high school friend's house for his dad's 80th birthday party. That car hadn't been in that driveway in 35 years, but when all the relatives and other old high school friends came over, they recognized the car, and knew I was there. They just stood around shaking their heads..... It was a time warp. Wish I was preserved as well as the car is. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Verne
PS: never put a sound system in that car. Always preferred to listen to the engine.

You guys are old https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif By the mid-late '80's the top name in car audio was ALPINE, went with the shaft model first, then upgraded to the DIN mount CD version, a few amps, Boston Acoustic speakers, etc... hmmm... (where did my money go? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif )

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

When I was using my Z for a high school daily driver. I had an Alpine stereo in it. I remember it well cause the cassettes always got stuck and wouldn't eject. I kept a tiny seafood fork in the console to eject them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

How is this for old: Do any of you guys remember "Mind Blower" speakers? I bought mine at K-Mart along with a Pioneer SuperTuner AM/FM 8 track. These speakers were 6x9 and each one had a big amp hanging from it. There was a base boost controller that you mounted by the driver somewhere. I had a set and put them in old speaker enclosures and set them in the back of a 64 Corvette coupe. I'm pretty sure the guy I sold the car to 10 years ago still has them in there!

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

1st system was a Pioneer big round dial underdash Supertuner w/cassette(cost me $20 at a X-mas drive at school for raffle tickets),Kraco 5-band equalizer,Jensen 6X9 triaxials. That system went thru Quite a few vehicles. Then was sold to my brothers girl friend at the time for $125. 2nd system was a Pioneer KE-5100 in dash Supertuner with a 7-band booster equalizer, cant remember the brand,Jensen triaxial II 6X9's,2 supertweeters,2 tweeter horns. That system was in a 72 Grandville 2dr Brougham. At the time 81-82 it would rock. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gifI can also remember the Reverb on a 67 GP conv my dad had.Wow https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif was that something to hear!

Re: Day 2 Car Audio. What was your system?

I can't take credit but a local Corvette guy, Chris Jensen, still has the 4-track Muntz (that's right 4, not 8) that the tape cartridge that looked like an 8 track sat exposed on top of the unit. He bought it at the PX in the USArmy in 1962 and I saw it as a kid in his '64 Corvette. I never have seen another. Yup, he still has it.
