Complete ZL1 on EBay

Saw this bad boy just start out on Ebay. Good comp. I don't know about the 88 claim though. Also, I think he made a big mistake with the high starting bid.

I think the price it too high for what it is. It doesn't sound like there are any GM parts left other that the bare heads and block. "Bore is I think 75 or 85 over (I think about 11 to 1)" Even the owner doesn't know how the engine was built. If I were looking for a ZL-1, I would keep looking. Just my opinion.

I sold a bare block and heads last year for $16,500.

Im the seller of this motor I think the auction speaks for itself yes im not sure about a few details on this engine true but can you remember what you did 8 years ago on a motor you built. i have built a hunderd since then and cant remember the details. I just wanted to set the record straight. no matter what happens with the auction i have owned or will still own the badest motor ever built. can you say that? :-)

How do you come up with the figure of only 88 ZL1 motors built? I think your off by about 100 motors.

So you think there was 180-200 engine built? Where do all these figures come from?

Re: Complete ZL1 on EBay

Tonawanda plant was the only plant that built the COPO engines. Muscle Car did an article in April 1987 on the number of COPO engines built. Records show the following:
34-ZL1's with engine suffix MN (Automatic) F-Body
54-ZL1's with engine suffix ML (Manual) F-Body
1-ZL1 with engine suffix MV (this was for the prototype car)
1-ZL1 with engine suffix MX (this was the 2nd prototype car)
94-ZL1's with the engine suffix for the Corvette
That would put the total ZL-1 engines at 184. Can anyone dispute these figures? If anyone wants a copy of the article, just let me know.

MN was the L72 4 spd suffix.
Is Muscle Car from '87 that authoritative? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

Most of the info about COPO cars from these articles is less than 100% correct.
See Colvin's book for more reliable information.

That is what I was wondering. Someone has a source. What about crate engines? Were those the left over Corvette blocks? Also can am blocks?

In answer to your question "Is Muscle Car from '87 that authoritative"?
The reason I posted the info. was because Fran Preve wrote the article in Muscle Car Review. CRG gives Fran credit for ZL-1 engine production figures on their web site. Maybe someone from CRG can shed some light on ZL-1 production figures?

Re: Complete ZL1 on EBay

The info I have says there were 69 camaros 2 corvetts and 17 service replacement blocks. thet were true ZL1's sold Im sure they had several dyno motors. But the information I have say estmated engine production was 88. Im sure most of you all have heard of other numbers but out of how ever many they made 37 years ago how many do you think are left. I would guess less than half. Most of the original cars had the motors taken out to race in can-am. Im sure Fred gibbs exploded a few on the drag strip.

Re: Complete ZL1 on EBay

I've had 2 in 2 years That makes 86 left at most by your count. How can most of the original ZL1 cars be missing their original engines but still be running a different ZL1? This wouldn't make since if most originals grenaded and there were only 17 extras made.

Re: Complete ZL1 on EBay

I can see Tonawanda keeping records showing how many of each specific code were made and that probably accounts for the 88 number, but what about 'CE' engines and shortblocks? That's probably where most of the engines came from that are in the cars now. So I can't see how anyone would really know how many ZL1's were made. I guess you could say 88 coded ZL1's in 1969. Didn't Yenko by the rights to the ZL1 block casting and had engines made himself?

SuperNovaSS 10-04-2005 08:12 PM

Re: Complete ZL1 on EBay

Yes, Yenko did. But he altered the casting to say Yenko in it.
