Might need help checking out a car.
I am watching an Ebay auction for a nice 442 in Norwood Young America, MN. It's supposed to be a real W30 car. Would someone be able to check out the car for me if I decide to bid on it? What is such a car worth, if it's legit?
Thanks, Dave |

Any thoughts on what else to look for and an approximate value? I don't see any documents listed excep this statement...very tough car though... [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
Just make sure you do the transaction in person. A buddy of mine here in Jersey just lost a $5000 deposit on a 442 when he wired it to the seller of a cleverly hi-jacked ad: the "seller" gave real location info, addresses, etc, but it was all stolen from a legit person. If they ask for Western Union it's surely a scam. I alerted him of my suspicions but a little too late, he wired the money at 3:00 in them morning and the guy picked it up at 3:04 AM.

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
If I'm not mistaken, that is the car that Gene Wray just sold a couple of months ago. Gene's son, Mark, is the one that does his paint work, etc. His stuff is TOP SHELF in the Oldsmobile community. I bet the reserve is north of $40k.
Edit: Holy crap .... looks like No Reserve. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

I know, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Plus the seller has zero feedback and just registered 9/23. I guess if I was smart I would just forget about this car and consider myself lucky but, it does look like a nice car. |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
OK - something is definitely up with this car. After looking at the pics again, I see that they are the same pics that Gene/Mark used when he put the car up a few months back. The last shot shows it in a paint booth. That's a dead give-away. I bet you dollars to dog-$h!t that this is a scam. Send your money into never-never-land and good luck getting a car in return. Run away QUICKLY from this ........
Also, why would you have a *507* Minnesota area code and ask callers to call Pacific time ? Seem kinda strange ??? |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
You have those picts? or the ebay names to look it up...the ad says this "I would do paypal but have had bad experiences before so I am doing money orders or a service recommended by eBay."
So you could go with an escrow service to be safe.. |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
Here's the original, LEGIT auction.
'69 W-30 442 Some of the pics look familiar ??? Looks like the description is a cut-n-paste of the original. |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
This does sound way too familiar. I recall my buddy saying it was a woman selling the car that he got scammed on. Run away NOW!
|
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
send 20 bucks and have the local police meet her/him at the the payment location and have them exsplain why there picking up a check for car they dont own...they may want a easy arrest about now....just a thought.

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
I see all the bidders are retracting their bids. I wonder who would have tipped them off..Hmmm https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

I just got a message from the Wray's. The car is still sitting in their shop in Vancouver. They have reported it to EBay. WTF is up with some people ? Like nobody knows ? This stuff is in small circles. Idiots. |

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
This just gets weirder and weirder !
Check this out ! This is the legit paperwork for the car, showing the "Customer" name of the guy that Gene bought the car from that got the GM of Canada paperwork. http://www.fototime.com/8F771CE1AA11FFB/standard.jpg This is the "paperwork" that this idiot sent to me showing that they were the "customer". They friggin doctored up the pic to show themselves as the customer !! SCARY stuff. http://www.fototime.com/A7AFCEA8E0C18F0/standard.jpg |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
I would send that to the FBI...This hobby is no longer a hobby, its full of scumbags and crooks.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
I would contact your local FBI office and tell them what you have. Depending upon the local United States Attorney's Office and thier minimum prosecutorial guidelines, it may or may not be something they would devote time to investigate. Mail fraud and wire fraud are two violations that come to mind. Internet-based fraud is a big media coverage item at the moment so they might be interested in the case.

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
How would I go about contacting the FBI about this douchebag? I have one email with the fake document from the seller that I could forward.
I am really starting to distrust Ebay and wonder where is the best place to find a legitimate musclecar when it comes time to buy? |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
here is the reply i got back via e-mail:
Hi, The car is located in Norwood Young America MN. It has all the papers(complete) as well as the servicebook. I want this transaction to be smooth enough as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and have very few time at my disposal. The car is in perfect condition, no scratches, no special marks, no need for additional repairs what so ever. 45352 miles onboard, a great car ready to be yours. It has no accident or any engine problem. The price is $16,000 including shipping costs anywhere in the continental US. There are no other costs regarding this transaction. Now, in order to be able to buy it please let me know if you have any negative feedback and, if this is the case, for what reason. I apologize for asking for such information but I need to be sure. Please also provide me with the following details necessary to take a decision: -your full name and address for shipping -your ph# Regarding payment I am aware of the buyer's protection and we will use eBay Motors secure payments. I require a deposit for $ 4,000 with eBay Motors which will hold it until the buyer receives the car. Deposit is refundable if you do not accept the car. To complete payment the you must have cash available. If I receive the requested information you will be informed by eBay during the next 12-24 hours. Thank you. Rita Pinto jurys still out on this one. |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
How about a call to one of the car mags or even Dennis Gage and see if they will do a story on this to make the public more aware of the dangers of buying cars online with ebay, maybe with all the publicity ebay will finally do something about it..Im sure the sudden stock dip will cause alarm https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
sam, that is an awesome idea. I would like to see all the car magazines do a feature about this problem. It would atleast keep some new ebayers or new collector car buyers from getting ripped off. But there is no way ebay can keep track of who owns what car. Roger

Re: Might need help checking out a car.
on occasion i will broker a car for friends. I have been approached with scam buyers, with a (fake) cashiers check for more than the car, then they want the car AND the difference in cash. I did contact the FBI........Response ..... no time for internet related scams because they have hundreds a week reported......that is why they run rampant.
I personally think the only answer is vigilanti style outing of their scheme or hasselling of these pond scum. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif by the way Colin has had some of his cars (pics) highjacked and then put on ebay. when i spotted one i contacted the guy he said the car was in Italy (of course i had seen it 2 weeks prior in Mil.) I emailed him that that was perfect as I worked for the CIA and would be in Italy in 2 weeks.......never heard from him again..... i wonder why https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: Might need help checking out a car.
my newest repsonse when i pursued a look over
Hi , I said the car is inNorwood Young America MN.. but did not said I'm there also. Sorry for that. I'm a hotel manager, now in Hawaii actually and will not be there to hand it over or something like that. The rest of the money you can give me cash or check is not a problem. This is why we'll work through eBay Motors Customer Department and they will keep the money until the purchase is final and you test it and accept it. Sorry for not being clear from the beginning, my fault. Let me explain you how the ebay process works. The process works something like this: 1. You send the requested amount to an ebay motors representative. 2. eBay will confirm me that you have made the payment. 3. I will ship you the car so you can test drive the car. 4. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the ad, and also a clean title you will receive all your money back from ebay motors. 5. If everything is ok ebay motors will get the approval from you to release me the founds and you will give the rest of the cash directly to me. If you agree with this process please let me know your full name and address and I will forward the details to ebay motors. Thank you. Rita Pinto |
