70's style paint and graphics
okay guys show me some pics of some cool looking 70's style paint and graphics.i'm toying around with an idea on painting my camaro this way.i've seen a few pics of 67-69 camaros painted cool colors in and around different body panels kind of like the old s/stock 68 Bardahl camaro https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Do it! White stripes get lace and the sail panels get lace also. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

I agree with Sam, lots of lace! That sounds perverted! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Dave Miller has the best example of a 70's style paint job on a 64-1/2 Mustang convertible. It is awesome! Hey Dave how about a picture to help musclcar out?! I am getting ready to have a Camaro (play toy) done in the old "panel paint" type paintscheme as seen on the Bardahl Camaros from 1970. Check out a picture of a friends old 68 Camaro Pro Stocker that he raced from 68-72. It was white with blue panels with orange metallic lace over the blue. This picture does not do the car justice. Love the old school paint jobs. Also check out some of the older 1001 Custom and Rod Ideas magazines from 70-72 for more paint scheme ideas............RatPack......................

Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Troy, That is an excellent picture. The 60-70's paint schemes are hard to beat. Pro Stock all the way down to stock eliminator. The drags used to be one big car show for that stuff. I believe if done right......a car like that would steel any show. No cookie cutter paint jobs here. Maybe I should let Frank Arone loose on my white stripes! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Hmmmm........ 70's paint/graphics, a result of 'intentional chemical ingestion'? [/ QUOTE ] Back in the early 70's I did a 73 Challenger hood in multi colors with a little lace, and op art lines. Even threw some cobwebs on it. The owner, who always wore a Billy Jack hat, came in pretty smoked. He just sat and stared at it. Said he wasn't even gonna put it on the car. Was gonna take it home and hang it on the wall. After a couple of bags of oreos, and garlic dip, he decided it needed to go back on the car. I agree with Sam. Think it's time for some 60's graphics. |
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Here are a few of my race car. Sam I still wont paint lace on it... Mark

Okay Gentlemen.....Some of you have seen this....most probably haven't. This is when I bought the car in '84. Now I'm thinking I should kept it this way (?) Red panel paint out-lined with 2" white, all on Daytona Yellow. Whatttya think?...should I have left it alone?

I liked the car then and I like it now. I would be contacting GTO DON for some ideas on day-2 trim and paint schemes. He has done this for years! |
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Can you picture Frank and Calebs car with black or even green lace like Darrens old paint was! Groovy baby. That would be bad a$$. That would be a boss paint scheme. How do you like those sayings Schonye? Bring back some memories. Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Chuck
Personally I would not put lace on your car. Lace as a painting technique was not really used after 1970. Lace was really big 67-69. Again it's your car and to each his own. Depending on how accurate you want to get I would use endless lines and freak drops- super typical painting technique circa 70-74. Using endless lines within the white stripes on your car was used very often. I'll post some pics later. Of course I'm anal of time periods and what is Day 2 correct. |

Chuck
Here is a some pics of my car with endless lines and freakdrops(notice the front of the hood scoop). My car was painted in 1974 and even then endless lines were on the way out. The guy that owned my car said he told the painter he wanted the new popular "ribbon" painting but this is what the painter came up with. He said he was super ticked off at the time when he saw the car because endless lines were already becoming dated for the period. Red/White is really hard to come up with a custom color format. If you did not have the white stripes it would be easier. I would get rid of the white stripes and do some type of shading/panel painting that is on my car-that borders the endless lines. |
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Hey Dave, That brings back some memories. Looks good!

Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Looks like a slot car track I used to race at !!!
|
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Ok how bout throwing on some metalflake? That would be period correct.
|
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
now that's a cool paint job with those endless lines and drops.yep that's my plan is to remove those Z28 stripes and do panel painting of some sort. i was thinking of white panels and warm color like orange or even a powder blue color as a accent stripe https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif .just something to set the color off and go wild and another is how many panels to do on my car. i think having one large panel on the side and then on the sail panel. i not sure of the trunk lid but the grump lump hood is going to be satin black https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: 70's style paint and graphics
What about some gold leave lettering... like something found on the Grumpy Jenkins cars or pretty much any period correct drag car?
|
Re: 70's style paint and graphics
Chuck, I guess I never heard them called endless lines. We did a lot of those but called them op art lines. Maybe a geograghic thing, Freak drops I haven't heard in a while. They're pretty cool too. I always kinda liked fish scales too. For a while around here two color flip flop pearl was big. I did Cronkleton's 68 SS 350 nova in Cortez silver with a blue/gold flip flop pearl back in about 75. It was pretty cool. Way cool at night under the lights. Then we figured out how to suspend the pearl in the clear laquer for a halo effect. That was pretty sharp too.
Geez Sam, we really are old, but it sure was fun. |

I remember him painting the car on our driveway. Then he pinstriped it with red. I'll have to dig up some pictures of that. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

My old house in Hillside, Illinois (Just west of Chicago). In the garage was my Dad's Model A Ford and probably a Ford Capri. Back then it seemed like we had every kind of car at one time or another.
