planning to move to AZ
I'm considering moving to AZ for better all yr round weather for the car hobby and overall quality of life. House values in Wash DC area are crazy and to be able to build a house with some land with an attached 3 car garage and 6-7 detached cost a few million around DC area.
Anyone with a home to sell with this criteria in Phoenix, Scottsdale surrounding area.....or just your thoughts and opinions about the area?? I believe there are a good number of car enthusiast around this area. Im planning to retire in the next yr or so and play with the car hobby....so need some space for the toys and work area. Thanks for the thoughts.. |
Re: planning to move to AZ
When I lived in Scottsdale it got so hot this time of year we used to go up to Flagstaff to cool off. If I could afford it I'd have two places, one in Scottsdale, one in Flagstaff. Oh yah, but its a dry heat. Just dont leave anything in your car that will melt, like cd's, cassette tapes, etc. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

Re: planning to move to AZ
Ed,
There are a few of us crazy enough to live in Phoenix! This time of year, we have daily monsoons...last night a storm rolled through dumping 2 1/2 inches of rain per hour on the city right next to where I live (they ended up getting almost 3 1/2 inches of rain...we ended up with less than one hundreth of an inch....go figure. Daily high temps are right at 100 degrees. To buy in Scottsdale with what I envision that you're looking for would not be too different as far as the prices in DC. Houses in North Scottsdale routinely sell for 2 1/2 million plus for anything with land. Northwest Peoria where I live is much more affordable, and you can get a custom house built for a million or less depending on the size. PM me with what you're looking to find, and I can send photos of what's around me. |

Re: planning to move to AZ
Ed roll out where Bruce is at and look around, nice area and my Aunt just moved into Anthem down the road from Bruce..looks like the people and stuff is sprawling that way..If I was looking I would head past Anthem about 20 more miles and buy a hunk of land and do it up if you can get water and power to it.
I dont think you can get what you want in the little towns they are doing you are probably on your own to by a old place and bulldoze or start from scratch. I didnt see anything with detached shops, pretty high end stuff but neatly done with lots of rules. Bud. |
Re: planning to move to AZ
If you're going to be in the state for two weeks you might take a trip up to Prescott (my town), everyone else is moving here so one more shouldn't hurt. Lots of nice big places in Williamson Valley on acreage for 600k to a mil plus. Temps are usually 20 degrees below Phoenix, mild winters but we have the seasons. Several car clubs and old geezers who like cars.

Re: planning to move to AZ
Prescott is commanding $$$ from what I've seen...also lots of restrictions about building in Prescott proper...
Cave Creek is also a lot of $$$ with TONS of restrictions on what you can and cannot build. Like Bud said, come out to where I live and check out the area...I live off 67th Ave. and Happy Valley (Northwest Peoria). Less than a mile from where I live are houses in the high 700,000's with more than an acre of land...some of them have 7 car attached garages and then 4 car detached garages with guest quarters..there's one with 8 attached garages https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Housing prices in my neighborhood have gone up $125,000 in the past 2 years... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif I will PM you my phone number. Feel free to call me anytime. Bud, when are you coming back into town? |

Re: planning to move to AZ
Ed M, Az is great. Alot of hot rods, and of course BJ auction in Jan. Good luck. The Pavillions in the winter is wild.
Bruce, when my car gets done I will look ya up and come over to the Pavillions and maybe have a brew. |

Stuart...the beer is my treat! Do me a favor and bring that Steve Sandlin guy! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
Are you going to SCR8 with Steve? I'll buy you guys beers there, too. Now that I think of it...I'm going to have to make an excel spreadsheet to keep track of all the people I that I owe beers! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif This may cost me a bit more than expected! J/K... |
Re: planning to move to AZ
Bruce, I took a rain check for the trip with Steve, I will be in N.C. checking on my car. Steve S. is a great guy. SCR sounds like great fun, enjoy. I will call you when I come over to Scottsdale. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: planning to move to AZ
There are lots of nice places around the phoenix area with an acre or so but there is no city these days that will let you do whatever you want as far as building "outbuildings". I have built in phoenix, glendale, scottsdale, tempe (where I live now), and even chino valley outside of prescott and they all have a ton of red tape to get around now. I couldn't get a detached garage approved in tempe and finally had to attach it with a carport to the house for them to let me build what I wanted and even then I had to go to the city council for approval and it took 10 months, for a simple garage that is nuts.. For a place like you describe it comes down to finding it available and in your price range. as bruce said, west valley is cheaper if you want to stay close in to the city otherwise Tonopah to the west, maricopa to the south, apache junction/florence to the east, new river area to the north are still reasonable for land big enough to have a nice detached garage.
Good luck! |

Re: planning to move to AZ
Here is a suggestion:
Move to Southeastern Ohio where I live. You could live like a king with 1 million dollars and rent a condo in AZ during the winter months(with global warming only 3-4 months are really bad nowdays).. Land is super cheap, no crime, no traffic or congestion. Our yearly property tax is probaly what you pay in 1-2 months. Guess what? no building permits or inspectors!! Build what you want. Columbus (Goodguys, Mopar Nats, Springnationals, Jegs etc) is 1.75 hours away and Pittsburgh in the opposite direction in 1 1/2 hours. Summit Racing is 1 1/2 hrs north. Canfield (swap meets and Hot Rod Super nats is 1 1/4 hrs north), Street Machine Nationsls in Lima is 3 hours west. Carlisle PA (swap meets, GM show, MOpar, Ford show etc etc is 4 hours away exactly). Street Rod Nat's in Louisville is 5 hours south. I live in the car Mecca. A million dollar house in our area is 3-5 million (or more)in AZ or Wa DC. My wife and I bought 13 acres of nice rolling/level non stripped ground for 63K and it has restrictions (no trailers, house has to be a certain size etc) but still no building permits or inspectors. The land was more because of the restrictions and we are about 2 miles from I-70. A friend has an old farm(42 acres) about 8-10 miles from I-70 and he's asking 120k and it has a very good older barn and newer Morton 35x45 building though the house needs major work-best to tear it down. The money you save you can buy a Yenko or another copo for that matter. Plus you don't have to check your shoes for scorpions or rattlesnakes before putting them on. |

Re: planning to move to AZ
A lot of the people who have moved here recently are from California...They've taken their equity and run...most can buy a house with just their equity earnings...and spend the rest on fun stuff. Plus, your only an hour away from SoCal by air (or ~5 hours by car...if you set your cruise at 80+mph). Sure it gets hot here...but that why we have A/C and pools....and palm trees and monsoons! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gifhttps://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: planning to move to AZ
No twisters/tornadoes were I live at. Applacian hill country. The tops of the mountains and steep deep valleys kill the tornadoes before they can start-they need level ground.
We do have "Deliverance" type of people where I live though. Just don't step on their land or you might get shot. West Virginia is right across the Ohio river of course. My wife is a horse veterinarian and some of the people that live back in those "hollers" are just plain scary. I can take you to places that are like out of a twilight zone episode. Unbelievable that people still live that way (no electricity/plumbing/no bridges-drive through creeks to get to their houses etc). I was out on Fish Creek W.Va last month checking out for old cars and trust me the confederate rebel flags are still waiving...I saw 3 or 4 |
Re: planning to move to AZ
I hear ya Whitetop. I used to live in Huntsville Alabama. We would take frequent trips to Tennesee and Kentucky to visit...Even in 1969 as a kid...I couldn't believe that there were whole neigborhoods that didn't have plumbing, etc. They had outhouses and crap everywhere. If I remember right, these were also in the hills.

Re: planning to move to AZ
Well, another day looking...did the north of scottsdale...did not even get into scottsdale as the prices did not meet the criteria..meaning under a mil!!!! Looked at cave creek and desert hills area and have found a few fairly new places....3600 sq ft house, 4 br, mother in law seperate building and very large double RV garage for 950 and no pool. man i loved that garage.....seems these garage structures are allowed and have to be designed consistent with the house look, whick is fine for me...i very big on conformance for overall appearance...was on a busy rd though!! Also found a new build, with plenty of land where i can build the structure and pool. Im hearing 50 dollars a sq ft for garage space. Today we are on our own, and maybe i adjust the criteria....go with a track home instead of a custom home and buy a warehouse?? will look into some commercial property.
bruce , ill give u a call today...man this is tough going. |
Re: planning to move to AZ
Whitetop, i hear ya...im from aliquippa pa, and for a mil around that area i could own alot ...but, the better half is not too keen on the idea...little too rural for us..want some neighbors fairly close by. Also the wifes parents are out in AZ...so we will continue to find something that works for both of us...i like these RV garage structures out here...seems very accepted and i assume i can do what i want inside? THe one i saw yesterday was 50 x 42...gigantic !!!
