Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

Not that I know of. The L79 was available in the 2 door post, 2 door coupe, and SS models, but to my knowledge not available in 4 door or wagon models.

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

If you look at a 1966 Chevrolet order guide it shows the L79 motor as available on all ChevyII models with no exclusions, at least at that source. Remember, we do know 350hp in 66 and 325hp in 67 motors were in Chevelle wagons so why not Nova ?

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

No 327 350Hp in any 66 Chevelle. Not Available. In 65,67 and 68 Yes. But for some unknown Reason not in 66.

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

Jenkins told us that he drove to N.Y. to look at a 66 wagon with the heavy duty towing package that consisted of a 327/350hp motor, 4 speed and posi rear. This was in the 80's when he had a non SS 66 350hp car that he was going to restore. I saw that 66 car Grump had. Said the wagon was original owner, but he wanted to much for it. He said to Pete and I that you could virtually get anything you wanted back then as long as you knew what to ask for and if you had a good salesman. Those wagons must exist. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

The paperwork says that it was available, but as far as I know there are no documented examples. Sort of like LS7 'velles.

Salvatore 07-26-2005 11:33 PM

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

I never saw it I just know that Grump went to look at one in N.Y. Sometimes in the old days things were listed as heavy duty instead of high performance. (with the same options) He wanted to buy it but to expensive he said. I guess he lost interest and did sell his 66 non SS car he was going to restore. This was in the 80's. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I believe there was a post a year or two ago on this board, where someone said that an Electric-company in the midwest had ordered L-79 wagons. I believe he stated that they had Hurst shifters delivered to the factory to be installed in the cars.

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

I worked at Willow Run from '64-'66 (Production Foreman, Engine Dress line and Chassis Line), and I clearly recall that we built a Fleet Order of 20 or so white '66 Chevy II station wagons with tinted glass for an outfit with a name like "Southwest Oklahoma Gas & Electric" that were all L-79 4-speeds with A/C (the A/C in those days was the "Cool-Pack" under-dash hang-on unit). The F&SO also called for Hurst shifters, and the customer's rep delivered a pallet of retail-boxed Hurst shifters to the plant to build them with. We installed the Hurst shifters on the engine dress line, and the dual exhaust systems were a PITA coming down the Chassis Line, as we had to drill holes in the left rear rails and install Rivnuts to anchor the left side muffler and tailpipe hangers. The roll-testers loved them! Somewhere in Oklahoma the meter-readers had lots of fun with those cars! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

This reminds me of the 4 door, 4 speed 409 Biscayne that was at Barrett Jackson this past January...according to the description, it was used by a Texaco employee as his business car in the oil fields...

Here's the description of the car:

Well there's the answer. I bet the search is on in Oklahoma. One of those wagons would be a neat find.

Ok John, You are my new hero. Kind of guys we need. These cars may have never shown up anywhere on paper, but obviously they did exist! Probably was ordered as a heavy duty option and not high performance. Welcome to the site and thanks for the great description. That is what makes this site so cool! Your first post and you bring a lot with you. I think I can speak for the rest of the members that we would all LOVE to hear more stories about the assembly line process. I would bet if a thread were started, it might quicky even surpass Darren's thread in number of pages. (sorry Darren) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

My understanding is that in 1966, because the Chevelle was debuting with it's BIG BLOCK 396. ( 65 Z-16 was sort of the testing of the waters for this ) All 66 SS Chevelles would be getting as a Base engine; 396/325hp. This was Chevy's big dog so ta speak, so it didn't seem to make sense for them to sell a 66 Chevelle L-79 which would essentially have more HP than their New Base model SS. So, the L-79 was not, to my knowledge, released for Chevelles in 1966, but then was offerred in 1967 Chevelles.

The book Chevy Super Sports 1961-1976 by Terry V.Boyce says:In mid year of 1966 the L-79 was available as an option for the Malibu and SS Chevelle. Then it go's on and says that it was possible to approimate an SS-style car with the 327 350hp L-79.Then it says; There is no way to determine how many of these RPO L-79's were built;they are not listed in the 1966 option production book.So it was available in the 1966 Chevelle.

Re: NOVA L79 WAGON????

Well, while I'm on a roll, I'll share two more Chevy II stories:

1. Some GSA (General Services Administration) genius ordered about a dozen 4-cylinder Powerglide Chevy II station wagons for the government; that was long before anyone ever dreamed about balance shafts for large 4-cylinder engines, and the 153-cube L-4 just had HUGE soft rubber motormounts so the engine could shake without popping all the welds in the car, and it had a special 4"-diameter prop shaft with an oiled cardboard liner to try and absorb the driveline vibration. They were the ultimate "slugs" of all time, took forever to spin up the inertia rollers in the roll-test machines, and had so little power that they couldn't be driven up the ramps onto the haulaway trucks under their own power. We had to pull them up the ramps onto the trucks with a cable run over the front of the truck and attached to a forklift. God only knows what Federal agency got them, but I'm sure they didn't need sign-up sheets for who got to drive them for the weekend https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

2. Another GSA genius ordered a dozen right-hand-drive 6-cylinder Chevy II wagons with 3-on-the-tree to be shipped to some foreign aid location in Africa, with huge "Hands Across The Sea" decals on the doors. Imagine, if you will, the shift linkage required to get rod motion from the two levers on the right side of a right-side-mounted steering column across the car to the left side of the manual transmission, not to mention the special bellhousings with the clutch fork on the right-hand side. All the right-hand-drive clutch and shift linkage parts were hand-made at Engineering, passed out to me each day in car sets of rods, bellcranks, brackets, swivels, clips, bushings and fittings, and my Utilityman and I followed each one down the line trying to put them together at 65 per hour line speed, one every three hours or so. We never did get one to operate off the end of the Final Line - each one was pushed off the line onto a hoist, and took about an hour's work to get the linkages to work before they could be roll-tested. Just to top it off, when they were all done, the GSA sent an inspector into the plant to sign off on each one before we could ship them, and he picked them apart for days like they were GM Building Lobby show cars before we finally got rid of them. I don't imagine the linkages lasted very long in real-world use once they got to wherever they ended up, and they probably didn't do much for the image of the U.S. "Hands Across The Sea" program https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif
