Where do you shift your BB?
1 Attachment(s)
.......so, this past Saturday, my 5 childhood friends show-up with a bushel of Maryland Crabs, (Old Bay seasoning of course) REAL HOAGIES (or sub-sandwiches as some call them) from Chester, Pa. and some Coors Lights for a belated 50th....YEA...I said 50th BD Party. After talking about the days of the all the cars we had (AND WISH WE KEPT....like the green 69 396/375 Nova SS with benchseat and T400 on the column I DIDN'T BUY and bought a 65 SS Impala with a 396/325) instead...DUH?!, spitting crab shells and drinking the hot sauce, at 2:30 am Sunday we head for the garage.....Yes, I took it out. Woke the neighbors up after puttin heat into the motor and took it on the Marne Highway. NOW, I don't know where you guys live, but even the Jersey Mosquitos were pissed when I shifted 1-2 the 2-3 at 7800! At 6800 in 3rd, I lifted in fear of the Mt Laurel pole-leece, and the needle being buried past 120mph...GOD as my witness, let alone the Stahl Tell-Tale tach! Man, I think I got the Baddest-Ass Musle car like the previous post asks for everyone opinion. If any of you get to South Jersey, drop me a line. The crabs, the Coors and the ride you will NEVER forget is on me! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
That can't be safe... ease off those beers... haha j/k
Your car pulls strong at 7,800 rmp? What motor is in the Camaro? Any modifications done to the car? |
Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Drive it like you just stole it, That’s what they are for.. And yes… This beast is still pulling @ 7800. |
Re: Where do you shift your BB?
"This beast is still pulling @ 7800." Had a home built L-88 in a 68 Camaro convert that would pull through 7200 with a richy 5-speed...man that car was fast.

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Go sleep it off, and be thankful you didn't hit anything!

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Shift when the engine starts going daaaaa ta ta ta ta ta....whammm..Then the tires start smookin again.

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
This is why I have a 6500 rev limiter on my car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif
The bone-stock exhaust holds me back, but the guy who built my engine said that with an open exhaust 7500 rpm would be no problem. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Just remember that you're sitting on the power train warranty every time you get in the car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif |
Re: Where do you shift your BB?
-------I dont know what cam you are running, but when we built Red Alerts motor we built it to make its power at 7000 and it was a race car that weighed 3900lbs and ran in the low tens. Engine dynoed at 765 at 7000rpm. Any faster than that would peal a tenth or two off. What you were doing may have been fun but I cant believe it was optimal! Please dont take this as a slam. Its not intended that way, but you had to be out of your RPM band. I would be interested in hearing weather you felt the engine flatten out up there or not. If its a factory spec cam it would start to run out of steam around 6500. Also, what are the specs on the cam you are twisting?............Bill S

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
7800 is impressive but without proper valvetrain thats really dialed in (particularly on a bbc)I dont know if i'd try it too many times.

I was out in my blown Z and pulled 2 gear and it went boom!! It never hit the rev limiter, it blew a head gasket on the right side. It did put down 200 foot of rubber though!

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Jeff,
I hope those Hoagies were from Gaetano's. Boy since I move down here those are one of the things I miss the most. You have guts!!! I have always doubted if Ronnie Sox could drive my Yenko on a few beers. I personallly have a 1 beer limit on my 60 mph burnouts as I tourch the tires all the way through 3rd gear and 1/2 of 4th! Thinking about that area and growing up there, I just remember all those races on Barton Landing Road. Now it's all houses insteed of the once farm land. KEEP IT STRAIGHT AND IN THE MIDDLE and (hold those RPM's down) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif Good to here from you again. Keith |

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
I may not be Ronnie Sox, but I still would not let him have a few cold ones and romp on my car even if I only have 8 plugs. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Great pictures!

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Let's keep alcohol fueled dragster's on the track, not on the street. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif
And hey! Let's be careful out there. |

Now......a 7800 r shift AIN"T my normal practice on the street...thanks for all the advise. I know the engine can handle it with the Valve train that it has, BUT, a donation The Connecting Rod God or any other Valvetrain God is one I don't want to make! As for the cam as some have asked, it has .617 lift in. & exh w/110 C/L. The duration is 317 int. and 252 exh. It's a roller. One part that I trust is the Jesel rockers and the Solid Front T.C. cover from Comp Cams; no cam walk.
Now.....as for being "achohol charged"........Thanks again...BUT I had 2 and would never drink and drive! As for understanding the geometry of a Big Block and REALLY having the desire to go fast......I can and have...like 170mph in 8.2...I've only went up the road once in this! Now...THAT WAS INTENSE just cruising and rattling the throttle a bit just for kicks! The local police who I know told me NEVER to do it again...Dang! Bill, yea.....UR right. The cam is dialed in for 3000-7200. But, I tell you, at 6800 in 3rd (T400) the damn thing had my head pinned to the headrest and was still pulling!!!
Luv those cubic inches! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Jeff, Post some more current pics of your cars exterior, interior, engine bay, etc. It is a beautiful Camaro!

Re: Where do you shift your BB?
Spin-em! Rev them like a small block! Thats why the stock eliminator boys like the 396 over the 427 for the stick cars because you can rev them higher and a little less H.P. factor. Ronnie Evans spins his nostalgic 63 409 Impala at 8,000 with a Jerico 4 speed and a 409 crank. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
