Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

..after further review of the block
...the casting date on the side of the block is
..... G11 8
....and there is a vin # on the side of the block that reads
........ 18BXXXXXX
...so I believe this to be from a 1968 two-door sedan chevelle ( baltimore built )...probably a 4-speed ( post ) car
.....the numbers on the front pad are definately
.... T0824KG
...YYYYEEEEHHHAAWWWWWW!!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

I just checked the chevelle website and it does not list "KG" as a code for the chevelle for 1968
...but it does on the 1969 list????
....so is it for a 1968...or 1969????
...the vin on the pad definately reads "18B......"
..any help? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

If it's authentic,as well as an "8B" after the number 1,it is definitely for a 1968 application-Chevelle-Elcamino.
A few 1968 L89's Chevelle-Elcos have beeen found..a say FEW.
The VIN# will reveal more...
I sent you a PM.

Yes they did Joe, but no big blocks or Super Sports.

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

...so if the motor was built 8/24/68 ( T0824KG )....was it near the end of the 1968 production year....when did they start building the ones for 1969 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

There is not a lot known about these 1968 L-89 cars, but I do not like what you have relayed so far.
To recap:
*The #440 block is a LATE 1968(August)to EARLY 1969 production ONLY.
*They ended 1968 Baltimore production in July,1968,& Started 1969 Production in September 1968 with unit #300001.
*The casting date of G 11 8,July 11th,1968 makes sense.
*The Tonawanda assembled date of T 08 24,August 24th,1968,makes sense.
*The VIN# you supplied me with,is a mid May,1968 Baltimore,Chevelle-Elco VIN.
This is the problem area,& NOT a 1969 VIN# either,it should not be before the other two mentioned dates.
*I don't know where you are getting the Post Car possibility?

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

The 18B partial VIN tells you it's a 68 model year and that would be at the end of the model run with that date. It would be a 68 dated block, not 69. Even if it was an early 69 engine it would be a 68 dated block. The rest of the partial VIN should tell you it's a very late 68 car unless somebody messed up stamping an early 69 car and put the "8" in instead of the "9". What's the 2 or 3 digits of the partial VIN?

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

...It appeared to read "18B202XXX"

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

...The "1"...should be the "5th" digit of a "13" digit vin
....and according to my previous post...the "fourth and fifth" digits ...denote a "2 door sedan"....
....am I reading that correctly? ( the section Chevrolet Chevelle / Nomad 1965 - 1971 )

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

What's the entire VIN# John?
You won't find the Entire VIN# on the engine block, only the CON (Confidential) VIN number, which is an abbreviated VIN#.

The full 1968 Chevelle VIN# should look like this example:
138378B123456

..and saw that I had "MIS-READ" THE block casting date!!!!
...the Date on the block is " C 11 8 "....NOT "G 11 8"....WHICH MAKES THIS A MARCH, 11TH 1968 BLOCK

Re: 1969 chevelle 396/375 aluminium head....

That makes a lil more sense. But that mid May 1968 VIN# vs. the August 1968 Tonawanda engine assembled date is hard to swallow.
Are you sure that Tona date isn't T 03 24?
