$42,000 seems to me like a steal. If it's legit. The SS 396 convertible's are pretty rare.I don't think there were more then a handfull or two, of gm built RS/SS L78 camaro verts made.

Re: Super rare

I would guess that even with a replacement motor your still looking at an 70,000-80,000 dollar car...with a date correct motor its over 100K, I just happen to have a motor like that.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

The 323 block came into production around June of 1967 for the 396/375hp and the trim tag says the car was built 06A not 05A (blew it up on the computer) as he states in the auction so the motor could very well be correct and original.
The carb is correct for his application as well and so is the rearend (although 6 months before the car build date).
Still a neat car and all things aside very reasonable.

I've havve seen only 3 june of 67 323 cast blocks and they were all cast F87 (june 8th of 1967). The three cars were july built cars all were L78's two camaro's and one chevelle. I doubt this is the orig block....anyone else with an earlier cast 323 block?

Re: Super rare

Well I did say could be and I have seen some strange stuff with these cars. The car is a June car and the block did come out in June so anything is possible. Would like to know the casting date on this one.

Colvin stated the same thing about the F87 Camaro date but we also know that every once in a while something comes out of the woodwork to put a damper on documentation. That's why we have revisions. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

On a side note the seller emailed me stating there are no codes or stampings on the front pad. Removed during rebuild was his guess so the doubt about the block gets bigger.

I am also a little troubled with the trim tag as well. Plus there a lot of things wrong under the hood that makes me want to go hmmmm.

Re: Super rare

I spoke with the seller on the phone...rear axle has no trac bar bracket (as one would expect on a Nov. rear axle), but the car also has no provision for the brace on the floor. Now that really makes me go hmmmmmm.... I suspect we may have a rebody or fake L78 here. I've asked for the casting date and transmission numbers as well as undercarriage pics. I also asked for confirmation of the hidden cowl vin.

Re: Super rare

I suspect it isn't as I told the owner that I would buy the car if he could confirm that the hidden VIN matched the VIN on the door...and after I saw a good pic of the trim tag. He said he would go out to the garage and email me the pics - he never did. I see the car has been pulled, so I suspect he didn't like what he found...

Re: Super rare

Hmmmmmmmmm another one bites the dust.

Wonder what the owner is thinking right now and if the phone lines are burning up between him and the guy who traded it.
Only hope is the car he traded away wasn't that nice or rare.

Yicks!

Re: Super rare

Hi all ,I bought the car its the real deal correct tach, traction bar studs for the bracket are their all three. bracket was not their probably unbolted years ago.looks like original seats etc etc.the vin is stamped under the passenger side rocker panel and is correctly matched to the vin on the vin tag.trim tag is original and the body # corresponds closely with another l78 convertable.I will pull the seats next week and look for the build sheet.Hope to God its their !!!The seller was very nice we put the car up on his lift.Nice car! Will keep you posted if i find build sheet.

Zedder 07-15-2005 01:20 AM

Re: Super rare

Hmmmm...I specifically asked if the studs were there and even asked him to check to see if they had been broken off...never heard of a VIN being stamped under a rocker panel on a '67? But hey, I've only owned about 30 of them so maybe I missed them https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Super rare

The vin stamp is on the cowl in the right spot.I call the vent that goes behind the hood under the windshield the rocker panel maybe its called the cowl vent grill?.we shined a light through that vent and the vin was stamped their on the cowl.I own another 67 camaro and its stamped in the same location. The owner did not see the studs but they are their. Thanks

Re: Super rare

Hmmmmm. It would have to be the earliest L78 with that block ever recorded and I asked the seller for the stampings on the motor and he said they were not there. I am curious as to the casting date, which I asked for and never received. Maybe the new owner can post the date. Without stampings the car in my mind is way questionable.
Unless they might show up as well. Hmmmm.

Not to take away the excitement of the sale and purchase but why would things that were not there when asked all of a sudden show up??

Most people who own these cars know the difference between a rocker panel and a cowl vent panel.

If the studs are there then why does the rearend have no bracket for the bar?? Because the rearend is way early for and the car is late.

Sorry, but things just don't add up and I would be a hesitant.

Oh yeah, please paint that firewall.

Still a nice car but I still have strong doubts.

Re: Super rare

I think everyone on the board had an interest, but things did not add up. I thought the block was a 1968 block. Certainly could be a real one, but tough to prove. Still not a bad price for a 67 RS convert regardless of how it started life.

Rick H 07-16-2005 06:01 AM

Re: Super rare

In 1967 only 1,138 Camaros were produced as an L-78. Of those how many were convertibles?? I am willing to bet damn few which in my book would make this car a top notch rare contender. Worth far more then what he ended the auction at.

I myself was very interested in this car until the pieces started to fall apart.

From what I have seen and read I highly doubt this car is what was advertised. Unless someone produces legit paperwork and post some valid info such as block and other component dates, in my mind, and I am willing to bet a lot of others as well, that this car is just a nice 1967 SS convertible as above has stated.

I wish the new owner (if there is one) luck with this car.
