Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I researched my VIN and trim tag last night for a guy who was interested in a car. The trim tag varifies what you can see on the car, White, Red Standard bucket interior, 4-sp, V8, RS/SS-350, deluxe appearence group. But what I wrote down the VIN it start 12337 which is for a 6-cylinder coupe. What's the deal? I don't see any tampering with either tag.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
How about a picture of the cowltag? Vin numbers usually never lie, and yes that is a 6 cylinder VIN.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I do have a picture of it and I will post it later. The only problem with someone faking a trim tag would be that you would have to find an RS/SS-350 trim tag for a white/red 4-sp car, because that is definately what the car was from the factory. Then someone would have to buy all the hide away headlight set-up, put a 12 bolt in the rear etc.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Whats the VIN and Trim Tag data. Esp the Build date from the Trim Tag. Like MrT states, VIN is problely correct. Double check the Partial VIN looking through the Passenger side Cowl Vent. it should be something like 17Nxxxxxx or 17Lxxxxxx with the N/L being the assembly plant for your car and the x's being the last 6 of your VIN Plate on the car.
http://www.camaros.org/cowlvin.jpg If its hard to see the Cowl Panel is not all the hard to remove and replace. |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I had all this info written down last night so I do remember some of it. I remember the trim tag build week as 025, Feb. 5th week. Norwood. The cowl is off so I will see if I can find the VIN there.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Sounds like you're looking at the body number on the trim tag, not the VIN number on the door. You would need to give us the information from both the VIN tag and the trim tag to determine if it sounds fishy or not. A picture of the trim tag is helpful as well. If the trim tag is held on with screws, that's not a good sign. It could be that somebody swapped the driver's door from another car and it was a 6 cyl car. What is the VIN on the title?
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
The VIN is on the post not the door. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
So here is the info;
VIN 123377N138511 Trim tag 02E D 67-12437 NOR 84206 Body 741-Z C-C Paint 2LG 3L 4P 5B The hidden ID number under the cowl is 7N184434 Are some of these numbers supposed to match? How do I attached a picture of the trim tag? |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Email the trim tag picture to me, I'll post it for you Jason.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I see one important thing wrong so far. The last six
digits on the hidden partial Vin# under the cowl, should match the last six digits on the Vin#, located on the post. In this case, they don't. Let's take a look at the cowltag, and go from there. What's the partial Vin# on the engine? |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
It is not a numbers matching car. I bought the car from my dad about a year ago and I never worried about transfering the title since it was not road worthy. Now that I am looking to sell it, he is looking for the title. For that reason I don't know what the VIN says on the title.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Jason, how is the Vin tag attached on the post? I tried to increase the size of the picture, but all it did was make it unreadable. Maybe someone with the right program can do that. Sam? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
It is sideways (vertical) with the clover shaped rivets. I am wondering if maybe it was in an accident and someone replace that post. The title would still reflect the original VIN unless it was inspected and changed by the state. Is there a way to do a VIN check like Mopars can that will tell you what it came with and where it was sold?
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Yes, right now the best bet is to find that title, and you will have your answer. You only live about 4 hours from me, if I lived closer, I would drive over and look at the 67 of yours.

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
6 Clyinder VIN with a SS 350 Trim Tag. Non matching Partial VIN is a bad sign as well.
1 = Chevrolet 2 = Camaro 3 = 6-cylinder engine 37 = coupe body 7 = 1967 model year N = Norwood, OH assembly plant 138511 = vehicle serial number sequence Decode for body number: 084206 02E = Built the Fifth week of February. 67-12437 = Standard Interior Coupe. I noticed that we didn't live far from each other.
I played with the image, lets see if this is better. |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
The hidden vin # is 7N184434. So,what month should that vin # fall into?
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
It has an M20 in it now but I didn't think that the numbers were right. When I decoded it, it said it was a '69 tranny. I should just post all the numbers, engine encluded and see what you guys come up with.

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
That build date sounds good since they are in the same range as each other. I too wonder when the VIN was produced.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
VIN was from a car built: Nov 66
November 1966 126721 141482 |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
So this kind of solves the mystery. The car is an original RS/SS-350 with the wrong VIN tag.
Now what to do, what if the title shows the wrong VIN? What if it shows the original VIN, how do I fix the tag on the door? |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Pull out the back seat and check for the traction bar plate on the pass-side.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
The rear seat is out because I just recovered it. What will I be looking for?
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
There is about an 8"x8" plate on the floor under where the seat would be on the passenger side, nothing on the driver's side. Is this what you are talking about? I can take a picture of it.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
That sounds like the bracing he was talking about. My guess is that you have a stolen car on your hands and that the door VIN will match the title. There's really no other reason to swap a 6 cylinder VIN onto an othewise solid car.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
Check your email Jason. How about posting a picture of the vin-tag on the post?
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I will take a pic of the VIN and post it soon.
I have been looking at selling this car but since I have been studying it lately I have found a new love for the car. I have decided to keep it, once I get this VIN thing figured out. I have decided since the RS/SS-350 cars aren't that valuable that I am going to make a Yenko car out of it. I really like Jim Pearse's '67 Yenko posted on this site. Is there any way to contact him to get more pics of the car to see what I need and what I need to change? Thanks. |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
No matter what the outcome, the fact is the true VIN for that car is 124377N184434. This is verified by the partial VIN under the cowl and you can also check the partial under the heater box by the blower motor. The partial VIN also matches by the build date and body code on the trim taq.
If the VIN on the title is the 6 cylinder VIN I would do what I could to get the car legit and/or resaleable. Rick H. |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
If the car is stolen, who do I contact to tell them this and either way, how to I get a new VIN and the title changed to reflect the original VIN? I want to do the right thing here, I just hope I don't lose my car.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I have made a mistake, Jim Pearse's car is a Nickey, not a Yenko. I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, if anyone has some detail pictures of a '67 Yenko I would appreciate it.

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
UPDATE: I called the state police and asked them about the VIN. They said that the VIN on the door is good and clear but the original VIN is not found in the western states. I then read on the internet that the FBI keeps track of all stolen vehicle VINs. I called them and they said since I was a private person that they couldn't tell me anything. I told him that I think my car may be stolen because there are multiple VINs on and after telling me that it is a felony if the car is crossing a state line, he said that I can call my local FBI office. So I did that, again that FBI office said there wasn't anything that they could do other than call my local police.
What the H&LL, you can't even turn yourself in around here. Anyway, I am going to call my local licensing office and see if they can trace the VIN. Other than that I don't know what to do. |
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
What VIN is on the title you have for it? If it's the 6 cyl VIN then you might have a hard time trying to get the original SS350 V8 VIN put back on the car. Most states will issue a new state assigned VIN which doesn't help truly identify the car and it might not make the situation any better for you. Some states want a tracing of the VIN tag to issue a corrected title so you would need the correct VIN tag on the car and be able to do a tracing of it. It could be an old drag car that never got title to begine with so somebody grabbed a beaten up 6 cyl car and transferred the tag and title to sell it.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I finally got the info on the VIN. The 6-cylinder VIN is registered in Oregon and is current on the car. There is no trace of the V8 VIN at all. Interesting. I go through cars so much that I have regretted some that I have sold, so now this one is here to stay. I am not going to sell an original RS/SS car for a 6-cylinder price and no one is going to pay an RS/SS price for a 6-cylinder VIN car. So I am actually glad this happened. The car is not stolen and it will now be my new Yenko clone.

I have decided since the RS/SS-350 cars aren't that valuable..... [/ QUOTE ] Huh?? Have you checked RS/SS prices lately?? Axle code will also confirm what you've found so far. The axle code is located on the passenger side axle tube. http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#RearAxleNumbers |

[/ QUOTE ] Since there is no trace of the V8 VIN I would do what it takes to get it back where it belongs, on your car. That way the car is complete and correct. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif As for turning it in to a Yenko clone, I think you are using the wrong car. If it was an original 6 cylinder car I could see that but using a true RS/SS to make a clone in my mind is wrong. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif But hey, like they say it's your car do what you want with it. Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I agree with using a factory RS/SS and I actually called a friend of mine who deals in Camaros to see if he has a more together '67 to trade for this one so I don't hack up a real car but he didn't have anything. So that is what has to happen. I don't like small block cars and with the SS-350 prices only being in the $20,000 range it isn't worth building something that I don't want.
I will check the rear axle number later tonight. I know it is a 12 bolt but other than that I don't know. |

Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
The state of california will issue a vin. tag with the cars hidden vin#. I would lose the incorrect tag. Then get a title through dmv or title service.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I have been looking on ebay and they are only getting $20-25K. Mine is non-numbers matching so probably less.
|
Re: Help on '67 Camaro VIN
I tried to find #'s on the rear end to no luck. The rear end is a 12 bolt with single leafs on both sides.
