70 Nova L78 WIW

Spoke to a guy who knows of a 70 L78 Nova. Trying to find out what its worth. These are the things I know at this moment. I'll believe it when I see it!! Laser straight, beautiful car. Bench seat, 4-speed, #'s matching engine , tranny and rear. Driven 15 miles since restoration. Citrus Green. Probably won't get a chance to see the car for a couple of weeks. Says original owner misplaced paperwork. Says its obvious it is what it is, if the right person goes over the car. That's certainly not me. I have an interest in this car. Especially because of the color. O.K. folks, what do you think. Patrick

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

I don't know alot about the car as of yet. I got a call from a friend who has seen it. Says its the real deal. I doubt this car has been in any magazines. From what I understand about the owner, he's not a guy who talks much or shows his cars. Can anyone give me some advice. I'll be able to see the car in a few weeks. Its in storage. What are the experts thoughts on this car without paperwork. When I say experts, I'm referring to those who know alot more than most about these cars. I thought the color sounded really cool!! If there's no paperwork, check the block pad very carefully for the correct suffix code. Then look for the other SS & BB specific items for the Novas, shouldn't be too hard to determine if it's the proper pedigree.

Here's the best place to go for the BB info:

I know I'm putting the cart in front of the horse. However, any idea of the value of one of these cars, in this color. I know I haven't given much detail, but I think its agood start. Thats also assuming its what I've described. Patrick

Don't forget to look for the swaybar, or at least the hanger brackets that are welded to the underside above the rearend. If it's an SS, they should be there.

No it is not my car. I have an option to see and buy this car. I won't be able to see it for a few weeks. If beautifully restored, numbers matching L78 Novas are "selling" for 30k, where can I buy one. Doesn't make sense if the same set-up in a 69 camaro can bring well over 50k. Some even higher. [/ QUOTE ] I was wondering where you got the info that all 1970 SS Novas came with a rear sway bar?

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

Rear sway bar was part of the F41 suspension option on the 70 Nova. The sway bar didn't show up until late winter early spring of 70. Designs were done in late fall 69 for the part but to my knowledge it didn't come out until spring. I believe all the Deuces have it. I have discussed this with Greg Roberts on several occasion and this is the info we have. Other Nova experts may have exact dates or documented cars for reference.

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

I have documented the same dates and events Tom, as all of the 175 deuces have the F41 package. The design and ecn dates are listed right on the drawings, and support the early spring intro date. The F41 was an option, and therefore was not automatically installed on all SS Novas. However, like Schoneye said, check for the rear brackets - if they are there, then that would be a very strong indicator that the car is an SS, because the F41 was listed as only being available on the SS models. To our knowledge, Yenko's copo Novas were the only non-SS Novas to receive the F41 package.

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

Does this mean an early build 1970 SS (9/69-11/69) would not have the brackets?

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

Probably not.

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

My 1970 L78 SS Nova has a build date of 12A and does not have F41 but does have the brackets welded to the underside.

Re: 70 Nova L78 WIW

No F41? The F41 package consisted of a larger front sway bar, the rear sway bar package and special shocks. Sooooo.... if you have have the rear sway bar brackets welded to the floor boards, then you would/should have an F41 car. (These brackets are not to be confused with the F41 lower leaf spring mounts, those are still available from GM as the generic replacement. Two styles were utilized, so it is easy to tell the original style vs. the current one).

My mistake, the brackets I was thinking of do not appear to be for F41.
