Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Sam,
Just curious. What did you find out on this L-78? Mark |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
I have a 67 SS body that has the 6,000rpm redline tach and guages. Looks to be original. Car is factory black on black with buckets and console. No power options at all, but I guess there is no way to verify it's an l78 car without a build sheet since its just a body.

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Thank you but, a Body, even with a build sheet showing it was an L-78 is not what I am looking for.. despite what others feel here.. a car that USED TO BE something Rare that no longer retains the item which made it RARE ( The engine ) is not worth anything more to me than an avg car., and it wouldn't matter if it had paperwork out the arse https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif
I do appreciate the thought though! Mike Crown |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
So if a ZL1 without the Driverrain was offered to you you wouldn't get excited ?
|
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Or a '69 Yenko Nova without the 'original' engine?
|
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Or ANY supercar without the original engine?
|
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Or the Sierra Tan 1965 Z-16 Chevelle Convertible?
|
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Mike,
A little off the subject but, what happened to the Black Survivor '66 that was at Nashville in 2002? Chuck ? I heard through the grapevine he had some health issues and the car might have sold. Dennis |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Or a documented '67 L88 Corvette without its original engine?

Dennis [/ QUOTE ] Chuck Criner's Survivor Black 66 SS, low mile car is/was a 360hp car, not L-78. I have not heard anything about it being sold though. Lastly: Not being a smart arse here fellas, but I have made my position on this subject known many times.. I am not asking anyone to agree with me, just respect that I feel the way I do, just as I respect the way many of you feel. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Are you sure about the '69 Yenko Nova, since the whole Yenko option centered around a CE block in the first place. It was sort of a trick question https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
I'm sure because I only have interest in 66 and 67 SS Chevelles, so Novas, Camaros, Vettes, etc.. docs or not, original engines or not.. are not where my interest are. But I love to look at em all https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
A guy I went to high school with had a 67 Chevelle SS396 conv and I believe it was an original L78 car. He had it painted bright yellow and it had a black top. Everyone called it the bumble bee. Last time I talked to him I think he still had it but I have no idea if it had the original engine or if it had any numbers left on the engine. I don't think he had any documenation with it though.

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
So if there was a 67 SS Chevelle convert with no engine but paperwork from Chevrolet engineering showing the car had a L88 427 installed it wouldn't excite you ? just a little bit ?

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
I think were beating a dead horse here!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gifThe man does not want a car without its original drivetrain. Ive met Mike in person and he seems like a nice guy! Everybody has their own thoughts on want they want in a car! When it comes to the non SUPERCAR world,I think people are less forgivin with non original engines! JMO https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Mike Crown [/ QUOTE ] No problem, I haven't checked the interior or under the gas tank for a build sheet yet. I haven't even checked the rear end code yet and I've owned it for a few years. It's complete minus the eng/trans. Looks like it was and old drag racer. Has chrome reverse wheels with slicks and some old school yellow ladder type traction bars. It has a front mounted antenna so that means it was an am/fm radio car right? Was black on black a rare color? |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
About as excited as someone selling the Frame the Mona Lisa USED TO BE mounted in https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif Sorry, Without that supposed Super Rare engine... it's just another 67 SS Conv., they made plenty. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif
I don't like to beat a horse, but at the very least, the add is getting more attention than it did in weeks https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Thanks Don. Group hug! Mike Crown |

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Thanks Tony, but I'd be willing to bet the Farm, Documented SS Hardtop only refers to it being a Real SS, if that was a REAL 375hp they would be making that CRYSTAL CLEAR and the price would reflect it...nothing in the add says Numbers Matching or Original drivetrain?? Just that it has a 375hp engine and you have to consider the source., read between the lines https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif But again, Thank you for the effort.
FWIW.. no such animal as Butternut Yellow in 66, or body color firewall for US Car. |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Yeah, I did read between the lines, but this was the closest 66 SS Chevelle that I could find, in regards to what you were looking for. And yes, if it was a L78, that would have been included in the description, along with #'s matching.
I also look for things left out in a description, but sometimes you just got to give them a call and double check. I will let you know if I come across any others. |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
I guess in my OLD age I am getting cynical https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif... ie.. there is one listed at TEAM CHEVELLE.. Marina Blue 66 SS Matching Numbers L-78.. Price = $25,000 Umm yeah, okay... so I tell my buddy, I am not even calling, b/c I know there is no way for $25K this is legit and the fact that it says it is a good car... so my bud calls and reports back to me the guy seems knowlegable and swears it is a 962 block, EG code and serial number matches VIN on door pillar too... then sends picture of the deck stamp... that's all I needed to see... not even close to what a 66 ATLANTA stamp looks like https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif
Heck they made 3099 of them in 66.. but what few are left are not for sale.. I have actually seen more 67 L-78's change hands in the last 5 yrs then 66's and they only produced 612 of those https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
I have a friend in Seattle who has a 66 L-78, he has had it 30 plus years. For the Right Money he would sell it. But as he has Stated too me in the past, he Would not want too ever see it again. So with you Living on the other end of the country I will ask him if he still is interested in selling it. Wont be cheap. Here is some Info I know for a Fact: 1966 Chevelle 396/375 HP, Original Color Tripoli Turquoise,Currently 68 GTO Verdoro Green, All Original Car Except Paint. The Original Owner set a National Record with the Car in Pure Stock Class, I believe it is a M-20 or M-22 With 4.10s. If you want me too find out more let me know. Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Interesting read, I guess now numbers matching mean that the numbers match, original numbers matching mean that the parts are original and have matching numbers, what we now need to ask and look for is this phrase" All original, Numbers Matching, on all parts originally assembled on this particular car at the time this particular car was built" with this attached clause" No original numbers matching parts were created or added to this particular vehicle at anytime after this particular vehicle was assembled at the General Motors :>>insert specific factory here:<< factory as specified by these particular and original untouched, altered or removed in anyway vin and body tag codes and dates"
Phew...what are we coming to when you have to ask a question in that manner... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Not sure I get you Sam?? Do you somehow think the seller in the above add is justified in saying Numbers Matching L-78?
There is no need to add or insert all that crap... just tell the truth.. pretty simple... If the engine is a restamp and it is surely is.. the car is no longer Numbers Matching, even on the simpliest level of what we all agree or disagree on of what Numbers Matching means.. surely we all agree that the engine should be the Original Engine with it's original stampings, that it left the assembly plant with before you could lable it Numbers Matching https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
If you read the thread on the car at team Chevelle, the owner keeps side stepping the questions and using interesting wording, I was saying that this is basically what you need to ask if you want to make sure you are getting an original car.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif Otherwise I could buy any old car, build an engine, plop in a rear and a tranny, stamp on the numbers and Whalla, instant numbers matching car.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif, All the parts would be original so when asked this is an original numbers matching car when in fact it isnt..

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Mike, I know this is a little off topic...but can you tell me what air cleaner Chevy provided for the 66 L78 chevelles.
Was it the open element or the dual snorkel like the Z16 cars? Thanks Billy |
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
Open Element air cleaner, same as the 360hp version on my car.
|
Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78
In looking at the ebay ad, in addition to being a blatent restamp, aren't the wheels incorrect, and it's missing the idler bracket and pulley.
