A little scare

Actually, a big scare. I was driving home the other afternoon and stopped to visit some friends who run a repair shop on a main street near my home. The Bird was idling while talking to them,..and I noticed no problems.

Next, I drove up the hill toward home, about 10 blocks and stopped to chat with a neighbor. After about a minute, he said, "wow, you're really throwing out some coolant". I looked, and I sure was. I opened the hood, and coolant was pouring out of the overflow tank. I next looked at the temp. gauge and it was at 212 deg. and climbing. I shut off the engine and took a closer look under the hood. It was quickly obvious, I threw a belt.

Fortunately, no damage to the engine. I replaced the belt, bought a spare, and added a gallon and a half of coolant. Things are fine now, but I was amazed about how fast the big block got to critical temp. I was probably only a few minutes away from serious damage to an LS-6 engine.

Now, I always drive checking the gauges. I grew up with gauges and not idiot lights so I'm in the habit of sweeping my gaze across the dash board. But, even the most careful of drivers can quickly lose an engine if a belt, or hose blows.

So, I'm thinking of installing some type of warning light/buzzer on the temp gauge or temp. sender. Is there such an item? Has anyone here done that or something similar?

Thanks.

Re: A little scare

I've had the same thing happen to me twice in the past.

About 1999 in my 69 Camaro I noticed the heat gauge going nuts just as I pulled into a friend's place. Turned the engine off, got out of the car and within seconds you could not see the car from all the steam from the overflow. Luckily no damage to the engine.

Last year in the Velle on Interstate 81 north of Syracuse lost a belt as well. This time I noticed it before it got too bad. After the Camaro incident I always carry a spare with me now. However, doing repairs on the shoulder of a major Interstate at rush hour can be a little intimidating https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

I did the same thing the first time I drove my ZL-1 hard. Luckily about half the membership of this board was standing there as I pulled back into the parking lot and saw the coolant starting to go. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

I spent half of SCR7 cleaning my car up. What a mess. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

yes cheap to do, you need to land another probe at a value/temp you want to be notified of, in the flow of coolant and head down to Radio shack and grab a obnoxious 12V buzzer and hide it under the dash...my bro cooked the motor in one of the salt boats a few years ago, again all the gauges but no idiot buzzer,,happens to the best of us, I think the hole thing cost me 10 bucks in parts and Rob had it in and working in a couple hours.

Bud.

Phil, when the woman tells you to keep your distance, it is for YOUR safety not hers. Her are some clues.
her picture

Another,
her "broom"

yet another,
Her day

and lastly what happens when you DO run into her.
OUCH!

Glad someone did. Unfortunately "she" had the last laugh!! That little prank cost me dearly $$$$ and the picture was taken in the "broke down lot". Oh well, well worth the hassle. I just do not tease the witch too much anymore and am very cautious what I do while around her. Poor kid, she doesn't deserve the reputation but it sure is fun! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Im not sure how that witch got the last laugh. Hanging there all mangled up. Anyway thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye out while crossing that damn bridge in Michigan next time. Dont know how it cost you $$$ , I got off with a huge scare, a long walk and small $$ price of a belt. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif

Cuz she and Cumby both warned me ahead of time I was visiting at my own risk. She was right about the black cloud. I don't believe in superstitions so I put the witch on the front of my truck as a way to laugh in it's face just before I pulled into her driveway. Won't be doing that again any time soon! The long and short of it is, I stopped by on my way through deer hunting. I shut my truck off and it did not fire again on it's own for several days. The $$$$ was for the extended hotel, food, towing and repair bills for a fuel pump, wiring harness, computer and anything else I have forgotten since then. It's a VERY long story but get a few beers in me at the Gibb show or SCR8 and I will tell you all about it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

All kidding aside, they are both great people. I owe them both a ton for helping me that week and for being wonderful hosts especially the weekend before Thanksgiving. Got to know Annie better and the delay gave me the opportunity to help her organize all her Gibb and other musclecar memorabilia. This woman's collection is mind boggling. I also got to meet another very sweet lady. However, I better let Cumby share that one with you. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

From all of your posts in the various threads, I would say that witch put a spell on more than just your truck. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: A little scare

Just ask around, this witch has put a spell on a LOT of us car guys.

Since you are doing research, read back on here when her husband passed away who at the time was researching a 1970 Dick Harrell Camaro for me. He was not gone more than a couple of weeks when Annie called me and told me that she knew all about the work that Dennis and I had been doing. She told me that she wanted to continue to help with the research. She refused to heed my concerns for her well being and priorities at the time and was more interested in continuing the reseach for Dennis's sake. That research helped me authenticate the car which Steve Sandlin now owns.

If this is not good enough, ask several others on this site what she has unselfishly done for them. This includes donations, giving of her time, free parts, storage of cars, offers of car transportation in her trailer, use of her truck, you name it. She is one in a million and I owe her a lot for that unselfish frienship. She has NEVER asked for anything in return. I was just giving credit where credit was due since I have yet to be able to repay her. So yes, I guess I am guilty of being taken over by her spell and damn proud to be called her friend.

Whoa slow down a bit there sailor

Thank You! You have again made the point I was making.
You state, "Just ask around, this witch has put a spell on a LOT of us car guys."
Although I have only followed posting on this board for a year or so, everything I've seen posted by this lady or posted in regards to her has been nothing but complimentary. For you to take my post any other way well, is wrong. I simply posted " She must have cast a spell on more than just your truck" to which you just agreed.
