Re: 1969 zl1 stories of the stolen or destroyed cars??
The guy that bought that car bought two ZL-1s from Rathmann. The other car was turned into a road racing car that won the Australian touring car championship in 1971. He recently found it and had it restored to its road racing glory, with the engine from the destroyed drag racing car. If you search the web for Bob Jane, you'll find lot's of references. They've recently come out with models of the car, etc. I've got a signed slot car model...

Re: 1969 zl1 stories of the stolen or destroyed cars??
I was told by someone I know that he found a wrecked ZL1. The story as I was told was that in the early 70s the kid who owned it hit a tree at a high rate of speed, pushed the eng back thru the firewall killing the kid in the process. The car sat out in a field till he bought it recently. He has had someone refabricate the firewall and rebuild the salvageable block. Last time I talked to the owner it was being restored. I'm betting the car will surface next January.

Thinking of this from an impact/damage standpoint, I'd like to see some pictures of the before, during, and after process. I'd almost think that kind of impact would tear the front stub out, or fold the firewall/frt pillars, up, down, or sideways. If possible please have the owner share pictures of the rebuild. It would be very interesting.

Just received my diecast from Supercar Collectables yesterday...AWESOME 1969 Camaro...probably the best I've seen.It blows away the GMP Penske cars and only the Creative Masters 1/20 scale from Revell comes even close...
Really,truly a nice piece.Paid $130. |

I'll bet whomever bought it wishes he had kept it, too. |
Re: 1969 zl1 stories of the stolen or destroyed cars??
Way back when I was chasing ZL-1s I called Huebner Chev and spoke with the new car manager. He clearly remembered the car because of the price and the difficulty they had selling it. He thought they had added some striping and wheels to help sell it. It finally did sell and came back with a blown engine a day or two later. Chevy warrantied it with a complete crate engine, not just a short block as was the practice.
I spoke with some previous owners and still have a personal letter from one of them. It knocked around Ohio [literally] for a few years and was somewhat parted out; trans is in IL. Someone bought the remains over 20 years ago and it has not been heard of since. |
Re: 1969 zl1 stories of the stolen or destroyed cars??
William you spoke to Ronnie Smith ,he ordered the car ,when i talked to original owner he didnt blow the engine sold it to a guy around Akron in 1971 where Jim at heartbeat city found it and sold it to current owner. The striping was candy paint which i have pieces of to copy on my day 2 clone, i have the blowproof bell, finned 12 bolt cover ,traction bars all off the car to put on my car . I first seen the car in May 1978 when my buddy bought it ,i worked on that car for him for 3 years , and i am making my car just like it, altered wheel wells and all. The car was raced at Norwalk Ohio only and ran 11.29! Car was not parted out but tore up and parts replaced!

I sold some parts a few years ago to the guy who owns #69. Nice guy. Believe he was from Ohio. He did mention buying the original block from Jim @ HBC.
