May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

Has anyone seen the latest edition of H.M.M. What do you all think of the '70 Nova featured in it? Do you think it is for real? I don't. Look at the dash. Why should this one be different from all the other COPO's . Also, this is the first time I have heard of a COPO Nova going up to Canada. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

LMAO! Just because you have not heard about it, must not be real 'eh'?

Not only is this car real, it's got the GM of Canada paperwork with both COPO #'s listed on it. Get some detail right here:

I haven't seen the article yet, but I'm aware of the car that you're talking about and briefly met the owner at the Supercar reunion last year. I'm sure it's the real deal. Neat car and color too.

It's featured at the link below.

Thanks,
OK fine. I wonder how his dash ended up with white script. My '70 SS has green on the dash, heater and radio.

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 04-07-2005 01:52 AM

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

It's not white, it's green. Many times the green tint is not distinguishable in photos, even on ebay photos, which is why most people will actually reference the 'green' tint.

We're just bustin your chops on this one https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif You aren't the first person to mistake this silver bullet for a wanna-be, and you won't be last. Since you took it so well, you can reply first to the next person who makes the accusation!

Welcome, and tell us about your NovaSS.

I believe it is one of 2 non-Yenko COPO Novas built in 1970, both of which went North across the border...which is good, because the original factory paperwork is still available, and attainable, on the Canadian cars. Unlike the rash of clone cars in some recent mags, this car is the real deal...

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

Well, obviously a VERY rare one indeed.
I am the second owner of my Nova SS. Bought it off the original owner back in '89 who coincidently ordered it from Central Chevy in Canada also. It's pretty much original. 350 - 300HP 4-Speed, w/4:10 12 bolt. The 1st owner Drag raced it for a while up in Canada when new and then proceeded to travel all across the Western US in it. He was a Tool and Die maker for Borg-Warner. That's how I came upon it. I worked with Him at one of Borg's divisions. Earlier this year I decided to do a full restoration on it so having a good source of information and feedback during this process is important to me. I want the car to be correct so I will be bouncing my thoughts off you guy's from time to time.
Thanks in advance.

It was a great article and detailed pictures, also it was nice to have everything explained about the COPO NOVA'S. The best thing is that Pete ENJOYS it and Races it.

You guys should read the MCR article from '98 or so where he raced all three of the copos - the Nova went 12.99 on the drag radials! through exhaust manifolds! through the tailpipes!! That's impressive https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

( I think JJ was drivin? (after he broke the 'velle https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif ))

Re:COPO PETE

Yes JJ drove that particular Nova ET.
He didn't break nothin..it was not properly "Secured" earlier. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 04-07-2005 09:36 PM

Re:COPO PETE

Are you sure JJ didn't crack open the center section on the Chevelle? The tube was fine with the orig codes, but the casting where tube goes in broke?

Mr70 04-07-2005 10:34 PM

Re:COPO PETE

Teasin ya M.
Your recollection is correct.Article goes on to say there was an earlier repair on that Chevelle axle housing, that was poorly done.
Don't blame the Driver. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 04-07-2005 11:46 PM

Re:COPO PETE

JJ is a wild man, especially when he's piloting a 4hitter! I think he bent his shifter rods last June on his 'vette while hammerin gears at the pure stock race https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 04-07-2005 11:49 PM

Re:COPO PETE

That was a bummer on the 'velle in that article, because I think that chevelle is fully capable of matching the et of the copo camaro. I've seen it racing at subsequent pure stock events, and JJ can really drive!

Re:COPO PETE

Thanks for the kind words guys. I still have not got my copy yet https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif One of these days I might actually restore the car. When I got it, it had blue velour seat inserts and a after market wheel etc etc, a lot of wrong things. The good news was that it had all original body panels and the original motor and bum. Back in 86 I put the wrong seat covers on it because I did'nt know any better, and really did'nt care as I knew I was just gunna race it. Found a 71 steering wheel that would do for the time etc etc. I now have a new dash that is'nt cut out for gauges, a new steering wheel, and an original May 70 dated exhaust manfolds/smog with original hoses from a May 70 Z28 that was removed the first week of purchase and put in a attic. Maybe by the 10th Supercar Reunion it will be ready. At least that's kinda my aim. Thanks again

COPO PETE 04-08-2005 03:42 PM

Re:COPO PETE

On the Chevelle, it was a pooly previous repair on the center section. It is all welded up and fixed properly now. Still all original tubes and center section. You can see the welds and some think I should fix it so you can't see them, but I like to think of it has history of the car and leave it that way.
I got that line of thinking from Micky Hale as he left some of the war wounds on his 'Cane from it's glory dayz!
Before that shootout, I never really looked at the rar end. I had never raced the car since I had owned it, so when the shootout came up we went tp the track the week-end before. I had the carb rebuilt and the distributor recurved and the first and second passes were both 13 teens, so we were happy and went home thinking the car was ready!

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

Pete's buddy Jim races it cause Pete likes the automatic 69 COPO Camaros he owns but also races Jim in the Nova when he's in his 69 yellow COPO Chevelle that I could have bought before Pete. His 55 Chevy was a blast too when he took me for a drive. I nearly $hit myself.

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

Didn't mean any disrespect Peter. You obviously have an incredible Nova. You see a lot of clone cars out there and the magazines all claim to have their experts. I have been a Nova lover since my brother brought home a new 375 Horse 4-Speed SS back in '69. Great to see this one's in the right hands.

Re: May Hemmings Musclecar Mag.

Yes it was. I don't have much info relating to the purchase though. Just His word. The guy I bought it from back in '89 was not the kind of person that valued those kind of details. He bought the car to race and have fun with. No protecto and such. I plan a full restoration though. I am hoping to find the build sheet somewhere in the car. Any ideas where to look?
