Tiger Paw Tire
|
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
To the best of my knowledge these tires were never available as an option on 69-70 Novas. Definately came on 69 Camaros, not sure about Cheveles. Other experts can confirm.

Re: Tiger Paw Tire
These were available on a few Cars back then.
The 1969-70 Chevelle SS being one of them. Uh Oh..look who's bidding, this is going to be interesting.. There goes my Tax refund! |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Bring it home Steve!!

Re: Tiger Paw Tire
There is a small difference between 1969 and 1970. I believe in 1969 they had raised lettering which read NYLON/RAYON and 1970 NYLON/FIBERGLASS. Also these tires were made in a couple of plants including Canada. I don't believe any cars were originally built with "Made in Canada" tires. Not positive on the last point, but that is my understanding.

Re: Tiger Paw Tire
I to believe Rayon was 69 & Fiberglass was 70.
The Canada tires is something I wish I could here more about.I heard the same, but no solid proof. Can anyone add more info.? |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
I agree, Rick. And it is no small difference. The 69 Tiger Paw tires were NOT fiberglass belted - nor were any other RWL brands THAT WERE INSTALLED ON 69 Chevelle, Nova, Camaro. The exception, according to CRG, is one (only)ZL1 that received belted tires (Goodyear Polyglas). It is very likely, NO other 69 Camaro, Chevelle or Nova received belted RWL tires. White stripe or red stripe belted, yes. RWL - any brand - NO. Look at your Chev. order sheets.
If you have a build sheet or other factory doc that specifically calls out belted RWL (in one form or another) for a 69 Chevelle, Nova or Camaro, please prove me wrong. This eBay Tiger Paw appears to be a real, non-belted 69 tire. Of course, this tire has never been reproduced. I think it will take a couple of repro set $$ to buy it. All those nice COPOs, etc. with RWL Polyglas are incorrect, I believe, until someone can prove their use. Until then, I'm confident the ONLY correct repro RWL tire for these cars is the Goodyear Wide Tread. A "judge" I talked with at B-J said they accept the Polyglas RWL (without the size in RWL) as correct. Too bad. Can you tell this bugs me? People see a restored, nice car, assume it is correct, and emulate it. The Polyglas has snowballed. Hail to an NOS Tiger Paw! Dave |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
After looking at my notes these are my findings to date regarding production changes:
1969 Dynacor Rayon(US built) Nylon Rayon (Canadian Built) 1970 Dynacor Rayon Fiberglass 1971+ Dynacor Rayon Polyester Fiberglass If anyone has more info/different, let me know... |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
It would have been nice if Chevelles had come with Polyglas tires. They were considerably better than anything else at the time.

Re: Tiger Paw Tire
OK, seems like a good time to mention RARE tires seen in F70-14 RWL in 1970. How about General Jet 70's ? My ordered new '70 Camaro 350-4spd F-41 car had em (Couldnt get insured on a Z28 at age 16, so I built my own after the fact). Also a LS-6 car here in Erie had em too. That super low mile red LS-6 that was at the AZ auction last year has em also I think. Seldom ever seen. What would make these or the Tiger Paws cool is they scream NOT A REPO when on your car today.

Re: Tiger Paw Tire
For the 1970 Chevelles,they used F70X14:
*Firestone Wide Oval *Goodyear polyglas *Uniroyal Tiger Paw *General 700 There is a member here who still has his original General tires.. |

I have a ws copy for COPO N693864 showing: 5PL4AD F70X14 FG BELTED WH LET TIRES |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Now another Yenko.net member is the high bidder at $326.80 for the Tiger Paw. The next 3 days might be real interesting.

Polyglas? My original owner says his car came with Firestones - would they be Wide Oval RWL? Bill, how's about selling me that Dale emblem you don't need https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
This site never ceases to amaze me. Already we seem to have two COPO Camaros built with RWL belted tires. I asked to be proven wrong, and was obliged! I haven't looked up the build dates of these two cars, but I'm guessing they are late model year builds - that would make sense.
I would think the proper tire for these SPECIFIC cars would be Polyglas, Firestone, Uniroyal and perhaps the General. The Polyglas is the only correct repro. The 1969 Firestone Wide Oval had the "Wide Oval" letters much smaller than the 1970 and up version being reproduced. So the trend here is 1969 RWL belted tires only on the COPO cars. Someone prove a non COPO Camaro, Chevelle or Nova with RWL belteds and we'll blow this theory, too. Mr. Moderator, can we move this thread to the Tech heading?? Dave |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
My car is 3rd week June. Were the small letter '69 Wide Ovals also belted?
|
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
I don't have a tire here in front of me to look at,but for the 1969 available F70X14 tires, only the RPO-PY4 White Stripe & PY5 Red Stripe were Belted Tires.
The RPO-PL5 White lettered,PW7 White Stripe & PW8 Red Stripe were NOT Belted Tires. |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Dave,
Happy to help with that theory. I know of 6 69 Camaros that came with PL4. 3 of those are COPO's and 3 are L65's (350 2bbl). All May and later.... |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Kurt,
Are you including my '69 RS COPO Camaro in your "3 COPO" count? SS |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Steve:
You have docs showing PL4 RWL belted on your RS COPO? Tiger Paws? Build date, please. Dave |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Kurt:
Thanks......I think. At least no one has blown my late model year theory - yet. Dave |
Re: Tiger Paw Tire
Steve,
Had to double check, but no, your car isn't in the count. The invoice show it came with PL5, not PL4. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
