1969 Floor pan color
I've been checking around to find out what color the underside of a '69 Chevelle should be. I've seen cars done body color and black as well. This would be for a Baltimore built car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
I would have to say they were painted semi-gloss black paint... Where is Dan V. when you need him????

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
Here I is!!!!!!!!!!
Keith, They were painted GM Chassis black and gobs of undercoat. The GM Chassis black is no longer available. And even if you found some, its probably no good. Mark is correct you would want to spray it 60% gloss. Most restorers have their own mix of black. Usually a modern age epoxy black. Good luck. Keith are you painting the belly of your L78 Chevelle? Dan. |
Re: 1969 Floor pan color
We're finally getting at the other Chevelle. Might have it on the road next year. I've learned long ago not to hold my breath too long on these projects. I'd have suffocated long ago if I had. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif Thanks for the help.

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
I am presently working on the underside of my 20,000 mile original 69 Camaro SS 396 and was going to re-spray the floor pans, etc and decided to wipe off the dirt and clean it with WD-40 since it was in nice shape. As delivered from GM the floor pans are a flat black color with some body color (Lemans Blue) overspray around the sides of the car. The rear wheel wells are undercoated with some undercoat overspray hitting the frame rails and underneath the car. I re-undercoated the wheelwells duplicating the factory spray pattern which turned out nice. Oddly, the rear quarters and trunk area behind the tires are not sprayed black but more of a light gray primer or paint. The car is rust free so I just cleaned these areas and left them as is. I can post pics if needed.

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
Anyone thinking about painting something that has been wiped with WD-40 you are going to have to make sure that you clean everything 4,000 time over in order to get all of the silicone of the floorpans and out of the cracks and seams etc. OR you will be looking at about a million fish eyes!
Don't use silicone near something you are going to paint! |
Re: 1969 Floor pan color
I decided not to paint the underside of the car and leave it original, that's why I used the WD-40 to protect and waterproof the underside. I was merely posting this for informative purposes to display an original undercarriage. You are right, do not use silicone based products if you will be painting the surface later or it will be fish eye city!

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
hey Paul I would like to see how the bottom of the car looks...I have the same thing going here and undecided what to do...

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
Paul when was your car built and what factory did it come from?? Mark

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
The car was built in Norwood Ohio the 3rd - 4th week in April 1969. The trim tag reads 04C for the body build date. How do you post pics on this site?

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
My 69 Z/28 had very dark grey floors with lighter grey toward the back. Of course, there was a some black overspray on some of it (car is black). A friend gave me a formula for the floor, told me it was a 90/10 mix of a sealer from Sherwin Williams (can't remember the name, but have it written down at home) and black laquer. When I mixed it up, it was not dark enough, so I decided the 90/10 mixture should be 90 percent black laquer. It was much closer.

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
Hey Rick thats nice for the Chevelle guys, but us Camaro guys hardly ever got the same treatment... I have only seen a few un-restored camaros with black undercoating, the majority have been gray with the body color overspray around the edges... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
Paul I was just curious, my cars are 12A of 68, 02B, and two 02D cars... The first two dates are the 396 cars... Both of my 396 cars are un-restored and they both have gray floor pans, and no signs of black... Maybe they started sometime between March and April??? I don't know, just guessing... Mark

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
My Z is an 08A car and as I stated above, the floors were gray. Not much overspray, and the only undercoat was in the wheel wells and the inside of each quarter panel. My car had no paint work done on it until I started in 1997. I have owned it since 1976. My brother owned it for a year before that. I know most everyone paints the floors some degree of flattened black, but question whether that is factory correct.

"Question was asked about a 1969 Chevelle to begin with."
Rick, If we would have wanted some belly pics of a Red 70 Chevelle I could have easily taken my camera down to Victory Auto Wreckers in Bensenville, IL. They get those darn Red 70 Chevelles by the dozen on a weekly basis. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Dan. |

Re: 1969 Floor pan color
If you want to dump the old car send me a pm, I need a new manure spreader at the ranch. Chevelles work best, pop the trunk lid off set the machine in and go. |
