Continued discussion: 70z
A few folks asked for this, as the original thread had strayed too far off topic...
But first, a word from us moderators: While the 70z discussion is interesting, we don't want it to get out of hand...so if it stops being factual or civil we will shut it down... |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Kevin,Mike The Magazine article is all wrong on My old Z28. I told Kevin that before and there is no proof of the car being built by jenkins! When I talked to him after I bought it,He mentioned that he and his kid rebuilt the engine in 72 after they blew it at atco. He never once said anything about jenkins building the car! He said the never had a chance to run it again. Then it sat for 15 years and the wife sold it to Harry Lutz,A local racer who was going to tub it and put in a automatic! He didnt have the heart and put it in a local trader mag and I bought it from him. I rebuilt the whole car from top to bottom and I made that car what it is today! And when the article says the motor hasnt been apart in years and nobody knows what in it is a joke.I built the engine in the car not jenkins. I know every part thats in it. One thing they got right is it is a running son of a bitch. Im sorry I sold it. Mike Wilkenson [aka dajudge]who I sold the car to is going to post the pics I gave him of me restoring the car. Tune In! I hope nobody gets upset over this but the truth should be known. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gifKevin,If you want the pics I have I will make copys for you if you ever need them. I dont believe anything mags say about cars anymore after the article.

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Uh.. OK, you guys are talking about this car from the cover of MCR and posted about in SYC Members in Print on the third page?
I just let my Super Chevy mag subscription run out, since it wasn't doing much for me any more and I mainly hunt and pic for good car mags at the stores anyway. That car and story were neat, but it's all crap? https://www.yenko.net/attachments/110...2Cday2look.JPG Maybe I should dump HR and wait for you guys to screen the others mags every month before I even look at them. Great, Now I'm having flashbacks of '75 Z28s for sale in the swapsheet and a could have been movie about a Shelby Nova! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
I dont want everyone to think its all crap! The car is a real 3600 mile car. Its just not as unrestored as it lets you think. I took the whole car apart and replaced or restored all the pieces to make it correct. The strickler -jenkins thing is another story. I dont belive any of that is true.
|
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
After hearing this fabrication it does not take away from the car, it takes away from MCR!
|
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
okay...is there a link anywhere to the MCR article or can anyone scan and post it.
I know Harry Lutz and remember the car...never quite understood him selling it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif I think his wife races a 20-30k mile 73 Z now, unless he's sold it too. Great car! |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
So the 60K question is where did the strickler -jenkins story come from ? Don..Who built the engine in 72 ?

[/ QUOTE ] Mossport Muscle Car Review does not own these cars and make up the stories, the current owners give them the info. Moderators, this subject HAS to be gotten to the bottom of. Maybe so we don't RUIN George Lyons GOOD thread we can move the posts associated to this mess to a new thread. I am sure that this topic is going to get legnthy. |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Yeah, good point. -Move all of this talk to it's own thread.
Well, that Z is a great car and probably does run like stink as we're told. So, it really is a low mile car that needed..what? -a few soft parts, correct details, clean-up and detailed throughout? More? As said above, how did this told history get in the mix and what is the cars background? Was it just a nice car that was locked-up for a long time or an early modified runner or...? Paul |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
[ QUOTE ]
So the 60K question is where did the strickler -jenkins story come from ? [/ QUOTE ] Charley, that story came directly from the original owner in a phone interview with Geoff Stunkard. So s far as the article goes it is all true. The car still sported its original paint, interior, and trunk but the engine compartment and under carriage had been cleaned and detailed. That still did not detract from the original low miles and how neat of a car it is. [ QUOTE ] You have got to be $hittin me! That story was all a load of BS? Are the people that spin these storys that stupid as to think there lies will never catch up with them? I am SOOOOOO tired of the LIARS in this hobby! [/ QUOTE ] Frank, there are a lot of liars and scam artists out there but you do not know the story behind this car. It is only hearsay. Nobody "spun" the story around to make it sound better or to increase the value of the car. Are you willing to tell the original owner who spoke to the author of the article that he is a liar? If so, can you substantiate that claim other than what Don states? Everyone now knows that Don did not sell an unrestored 70-1/2 Z28, and neither did the next guy. But for all intents and purposes the car has an unrestored interior, paint, (other than some resprayed lower 1/4's and why would you do that on a car that only has 3600 miles, maybe burnout "rash" from drag racing?), and original unrestored trunk. I do not know what the previous owner told the current owner when it was sold but if he relayed the same information as to what was in the article then to me the lies stopped at that point. I know I haven't kept anything secret as to what has been done to the car. Hell the article even mentioned that we got caught in a down pour! I couldn't hide that from Pat https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif......... I agree that this topic from Mikes post on needs to be moved as it could get longer, maybe.......RatPack....... |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Geoff Stunkard talked to the original owner of the car before he published the article. I bought the car because it had 3600 miles and reminded much of the same type of restoration that was done to my former yellow Yenko that i got from Bryan. Don white did a great job and should have been mentioned in the article, i thought. I don't think Geoff Stunkard knew Don. Geoff couldn't dream up such a story. The only thing i really car about is what Don said aout it being a real 3600 mile running SOB.It must have some legitimacy as Don and Patrick have wanted to buy it back. I enjoy the car and could not find a better example of a 70 1/2 car whether the history is clearly defined or not. Mike i just responded to Bob's post of the cars i owned and described the car as it was sold to me by Patrick Joyner who got it from Kenny Pascoe who got it from Don. Who care's? Don you did a great job on the car and Geoff did a great article based on his conversation with the original owner . I do have the build sheet, Signed affidavit by original owner John P Bogacki jr.,notarized with protect o plate still attached to warranty book, sold from Lanzalotti Motor Co., Williamstown, N.J., and i have also spoken to the original owner and confirmed the history of which i was told and read in MCR. I can only go by what i was told. If this story was made up then i agree with Troy. I never expected a post that asks me about my current cars to go south. Let's just move forward, positively. I don't care, I LOVE the car!

Everyone now knows that Don did not sell an unrestored 70-1/2 Z28, and neither did the next guy. [/ QUOTE ] I was the next guy and I never sold the car as totally unrestored, nor did Don to me as I saw it in it's various stages of detailing. When I sold it to Gary Baker I represented the car as a low mileage car, with original paint and interior. I also stated that the engine was gone through by the previous owner (Don) to make sure everything was in order after sitting for years and that other areas were detailed as well. The car was raced at ATCO and Front Street as the story states. As far as the other story is concerned I really don't care whether it is true or not, it is a great low mileage example of a 70 Z-28. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
I looked at this car over twice last year. Parts of it looked really neat. It is what it is.
It has quite a presence as a day 3 type car. uncorked - it really comes into a class of its own. Neat car for late night serious street action for sure. Not a "driver" on todays pump gas!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Over at the Second generation site they had a thread on this car. I do not think all of the photo links work but the posts are still there: http://www.nastyz28.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/000887.html Phil https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
I looked over this car in September and went for a ride in it. It appeared to be an original paint/interior car with a detailed engine compartment and chassis. It was very, very fast and extremly beautiful car. I fell in love with it.

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
It's been brought to my attention by DaveC68 that discussion is occuring. Let me set the record straight! We looked at the car a year before I bought it under a cover. When I went back to look at the car again it was in a small garage. After looking at the car there was mice living under the hood, it had numerous dents, dings and scratches on the paint. After purchasing the car, I fixed the gas lines that leaked, put a full exhaust on since that was a missing component of the car. After getting the car running and racing it a few times at Atco, the car ran well but I wanted something for my lovely wife to drive on the street. When I sold the car to Don as far as I know he did the restoration on the car. It really did have approx.3000 miles. I still have the my original photos of the car as I raced it and drove it (with WELD wheels). So Iwas the one that found it and sold it to Don and the rest is history. But there was never mentioned about Jenkins having had anything to do with this car when I bought it.

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
AS A PREVIOUS OWNER OF THIS CAR I AM STILL TRYING TO DETERMINE THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD. I DID INDEED SPEAK WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS CAR AND HE DID TELL ME THAT STRICKLER/JENKINS DID HAVE INVOLVEMENT IN THE CAR. HE NEVER ELABORATED TO ME HOW EXTENSIVE THE INVOLVEMENT WAS, BUT I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION IT WAS MORE ALONG THE LINES OF CARB WORK, TUNING, ETC... THERE IS NO WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION OF THIS AS I PASSED THIS ALONG TO PAT WHEN I SOLD HIM THE CAR. PAT DID HIS OWN HOMEWORK AND CONFIRMED WHAT I HEARD FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AS WELL. AS FAR AS GEOFF STUNKARDS CONVERSATION WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNER I CANNOT CONFIRM BUT I HAVE TO BELIEVE IT WAS ALONG THE SAME LINES AS WHAT PAT AND MYSELF WERE TOLD. I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THAT AN ORIGINAL OWNER WOULD FABRICATE STORIES ABOUT A CAR HE OWNED FOR 27+ YEARS. AS FAR AS DON WHITE IS CONCERNED HE DOES GET THE CREDIT FOR AN ADEQUATE JOB DETAILING THE CAR TO ITS CURRENT STATUS, I THINK HE FELLS SHORTCHANGED FOR NOT BEING MENTIONED IN THE MCR ARTICLE https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif HE ALSO HAD NUMEROUS OPPURTUNITIES TO PURCHASE THE CAR BACK FROM PREVIOUS AND CURRENT OWNERS BUT DID NOT EXECUTE. DON, ITS A GREAT CAR AND I WAS HONORED TO OWN IT, ITS IN THE PAST SO LETS ALL MOVE ON. KP

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
kenny
i have to agree with you regarding the purpose of this thread, or should i say don's modivation for hammering the article... you represented the car to me very acurately... the paperwork you provided gave me the name & number of the original owner, i contacted him & after several tries (& troy's encouragement), i finally spoke with the original owner, john,... he conveyed to me the story of how he ordered the car from lanzolitti chevy, waited for a long time to get the car... had already planned to take it to stricker for work to be done and so on.. geoff stunkard, did due diligence (imo) & also confirmed the story, in an independent conversation with john they had... i'm with you, why would someone who owned a car for 27+ years fabricate a story like this, AFTER the car is sold & he has nothing to gain!! now maybe don has some other motives.. i do not know. who really knows the entire history? i am told don did 'detail' the engine & front suspension on the car & it does look good, albeit some minor items are incorrect.. maybe don feels slighted that he should have somehow profited from this history on the car, or his name was not mentioned in the mcr article??? in the end, the car is a very nice, mostly original paint & interior very low mileage, nicely documented z, not a car that was converted by one of the most famous names in the business, for stricker & jenkins to have worked on the car is just a bonus as far as i'm concerened.. i bought the car for the same reasons kevin stated & am very glad to have owned this car & would love to own it again.. |
Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Geez. Sorry I asked for details on the car. It's a very cool car. Congrats to all who have owned it and/or brought it to its current condition.

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Kenny, I appreciate your kind thoughts on the car and Im not trying to kill the car. But when you say I did an adequate job DETAILING IT thats a little short i think. I respect your opinion about cars especially camaros but if you think that rebuilding the engine, trans, and rear and taking the whole car apart and rebuilding all the mechanicals putting on an exhaust system, then doing bodywork to the drivers door and repainting the driver side of the car and spot painting it in other areas [WHICH BTW I DID THE PAINT WORK MYSELF WITH TOPCOAT DUPONT LAQUER WITH HEATLAMPS]is just an adequate DETAIL job I dissagree with you. But in all fairness to you. You were not there and did not see the car before I started. If Harry Lutz seen the article then he will vouch for the work I did. Maybe he will post pics too!! And you and I know the truth about how the deal went down with the car and I did want it but thats another story. We wont touch on that. I hope we can be civil with each other as we always run in to each other at the shows I really dont want to be enemies! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gifBack to the car, Your right I do feel shortchanged in the article because of my extensive work on the car but do love the fact that something I did made it to a magazine. That is not the reason for this thread!! I just dont understand where this cars history came from,I mean nobody locally ever heard anything about any jenkins connection to the car!! And I think your a car guy and would also like the truth. I think you touched on it when you said that maybe he tuned it but as for it going to strickler-jenkins shop ID HAVE TO SEE PAPERWORK. I would not believe the original owner as he was pissed he lost the car to his wife!! THATS ANOTHER STORY! And Kenny, you seen all the boxes of parts from Lanzalotti. Everthing that was on the car was bought by the original owner from the dealer. Do you honestly think that jenkins would let you bring your own parts if he was to build a car for you?? I think not!! New jersey racers are a tight group of guys and are going to find out shortly what the deal is. Sam and some other local racers know grump and we will see if he remembers this car or doing cars in general for people. Sorry for the controversy. Now maybe we can move on!

Damn Pascoe...he told me Jerry Lewis put the ball joints on my car.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
one other thing, i don't think the original owner, john "lost the car to his wife", since i personally had numerous conversation with her when i called their residence, very nice lady & she gave me some insight as well....

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
Dajudge Start posting the pics of the "little detail work" I did to the engine and suspension will ya?? Start with the one of the car all apart!! then move on to the engine. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: Continued discussion: 70z
I think this thread started when Kevin posted "70 1/2 Grumpy/jenkins ,dave strickler camaro" in the context of his cars. Mike then asked "Kevin, please tell us more about the Jenkins/Strickler Camaro."
I don't know what is in the article but the gist of what I have read in this thread is that it is probably not very correct to title it as a 70 1/2 Grumpy/jenkins ,dave strickler camaro but it sounds like a killer car. It sounds like the car stands tall on it's own merit. Everyone kiss and make up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/Charley.gif |
