70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

Gotta move it out, bought another project (a 73 z-28). 2 owner 70 Monte Carlo. Great sat nite cruiser. Blue/Blue. All Original. Never had the engine "hot rodded". Bench seat. Just tuned it up and she runs perfect. I found the original owners manual and the PROTECTO PLATE in the glove box!
(wow, how many of those still hanging around!)
When I was tuning it up/cleaning the engine bay, I also found a 70 retro magnetic "hidden" key holder, and yes, it had a set of working keys in it.
Body:
Nice body w newer paint job, good for a driver/weekend cruiser. Next to no rust (two small quarter sized spots on each fender, under chrome trim, fixed).
Interior:
All original interior, all in excellent shape. 1 4" rip on drivers side seat. Headliner near perfect. Needs the vinyl top put back on, but I have all of the original chrome.
Engine:
350/350 (300hp?, thats what the air cleaner said) Virgin. 77k miles. Still even has the factory stickers! Runs great. Heater core was disconnected when I bought it, I would assume that it leaks. AC is all there and hooked up. Air only blows cool. Very clean and complete engine compartment (still has the smog tube attached to the air cleaner). Hubcaps, but I have a set of rally's that I can throw in.
All in all, a VERY original unmolested monte, that would make a great weekend cruiser, or with very little effort, a great original showcar.

3500.00 FIRM, sorry no trades.
Thought I would list it here before ebay.

I've gotta ask this.
Would it by chance have a button in the turn signal stalk, similar to Cruise control, but actually RPO CD-3 Electro-Tip Windshield Wiper Delay?

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

Nope. Just a regular turn signal. Were these 350's actually 300hp cars? With a 2 barrell? This is a clean low mile car. I just got a 73 z-28, so the monte's a goner!

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

Rich,

300hp 350 had a 4 barrel QJet, not a 2 barrel. Check the stamped code on the block to find out the true identity of the engine.

I can tell you a thing or two about 73 Z28's if you have any questions.

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

The tag was kind of ratty on the cover. I'll have to look again later as well as check the engine codes. I bought the monte as a cruiser while I was restoring the gold 69 LM1, just something to play with in the mean time. Then I came across the 73Z, for a few dollars more. It is not a numbers matching car, but for the price I figured I can always get my money back. The auction number is: 4527239905
The interior is ugly, and it needs a few things, but overall not to bad. I know the rear spoiler is incorrect for 73, but I really like the short spoilers better than the large ones anyway.

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

OK,
The engine code/Suffix looks like
V0319CRE, which is according to www.chevy-camaro.com
is a 350/300 horse car, but it also shows a 4 barrel application for that code.
Here is what is unusual, it is a 2 barrel air cleaner, and I am sure that it had a 350/300hp sticker on it? I guess the only rational explanation is that the intake was changed sometime in the past?

Where were the build sheets in Monte Carlo's (if they are regularly found?)

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

I've found them in the springs under the front bucket seat as well as behind the seat back "shell" of the bucket seat.
(I know your's is a bench, maybe in the springs under the bench seat too)
But I've almost always found them in the springs of the bottom half of the rear seat.

No VIN on the pad and it is to dark to get under the car and look by the oil filter tonight (to make sure that it is a matching numbers engine). The intake has a casting number of 8288752, but I do not know where to look for the date code. I have attached a pic of the intake/carb.

I don't know squat about the monte's. I just think they look better than the chevelle's (alright, all you chevelle guys don't start sendimg me hate PM's!). My mechanic has a 70 monte with a 402, 12 bolt, buckets and a shifter and it is cooool.
Anyways, here is the trim tag info:

ST 70 13857 FL 2199313 BDY
TR 767 25 A PNT
03D

The 03D I get as 4th week in March, but that and the body number and paint is as far as I can tell.

I'll help ya decipher Chevrolets version of the econo LA-Z-Boy.

Flint Plant
Code 767 is a Blue Cloth Bench.
Code 25 Astro Blue
Code A is White Vinyl top

Your M/C came with a March 19th CRE L48 350/300HP 4bbl
250HP was a 2 bbl.

The Particulars:
R is a Rochester Carb
CCH is a 2:73 Posi built Jan 12th-Buffalo

"V" is actually the letter "Y" for a Cleveland TH350
O is 1970
C March
18th day
N Night shift

March built car
Options:
Power Steering/Power Brakes/AM Radio
Who was the selling Dealership?

That intake I consider not correct,as it should be a 4bbl.Part#3965577.
I can't find the Intake number you posted for it in any Chevy books here.

Not to beat a dead horse, just trying to figure out why the 2bbl air cleaner (all stock appearing, to include the smog tube) had the 350/300 sticker?

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

Yes. Like I said, my mechanic has a 70 monte with the 402(396) with the 12 bolt rear, buckets, console shifter and the tach in the gauge cluster. In the Monte world this is not considered anything special. Apparently they only had one "special" car, and that was the SS454. His car is very nice and he uses it as a daily driver (but I am sure that sucks a whole lotta gas!).
The monte's just seem to have, I don't know, Character. They are still relativly inexpensive, kind of like the cougar to the mustang. You can still get a 68 cougar GT 390 car for under 8,000.00, but try and get a Mach1 mustang for that price!
(Not that I am comparing the Monte's to the Chevelle's, I guess the Monte's were more luxary cars and the Chevelle's more of a muscle car).

Re: 70 Monte -Clean w/ Protecto Plate

Dave, Your "Champagne Gold" Monte Carlo is really nice. It looks very similiar to a "Triple Gold" one that I once owned. In 1994, I purchased mine from a 72 year old women, who owned it for 24 years. In the spring of 1970, her nephew drove this car to her house to have lunch with her. He was a new car salesman and it was a "demo". She fell in love with it and it was sold to her. I promised the women that I would return to her house after I restored the car. Six months later, I went to her house. She came outside and tears rolled down her face. She was so happy to see her "Goldie" looking like new again. It was a great moment. After owning it for more than eight years, I ended up selling the car to a local hardcore drag racer. The car is now "tubbed", "caged" and has a 800 horsepower big block in it. The car went from being 100% stock to a rear bumper scraping monster! I sold the car to purchase a 1979 Camaro Z28 that was in my neighborhood since new and that I always wanted to own. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Dave,
If I understand correctly, the Gold (pictured) Monte Carlo is a BB with 4-speed. In looking at the pictures, it appears to be an SS454 based on the fender enblem, dual exhaust and possible horizontal rubber rear bumper strip (can't tell for sure). At any rate, what you are saying is that car has the 4-speed? I would love to hear more about it. It is a well known fact that you could get a 402 4-speed Monte but I have never been able to find a real SS454 4-speed car which is really odd as you would think it would be a natural. Tell us more. Yep, its a 402 4 speed, (or to make it more confusing what chevy called the 400 4 bbl, as opposed to the 400 2 bl which was the small block) No, there are no emblems on the rockers.
it has the rear bumper guards, the horizontal strip you refer to was standard issue on the 71 SS454 Monte only.
To my knowledge a documented 454 4 speed Monte has yet to surface. From my research into the GM resto package and copies of dealer order froms the only possible way to get a 454 4speed was in 1971, and it could only be had by ordering the ls-6 454 (I've never seen/heard of a documented one of those manual or automatic for that matter)
Take a look at the attached shipping doc found under the back seat.
