undiscovered cars

After reading the large responses to the threads about George's 1969 Yenko Chevelle and Charlie's barn find Corvettes, I thought it might be fun to duscuss rare muscle/race/supercars that we know about but keep under our hats. Everyone knows of at least one car that they've heard about or seen that can't be bought yet for whatever reason. Nobody needs to divulge locations but let's just hear what's out there. Here's a couple of mine: a one owner 1968 L-79 Nova that been parked for almost 20 years (almost was able to buy it last summer)and a 1961 Fuelie Vette that's been parked since 1970. I remember a real 1963 Z-11 aluminum front Impala parked outside of a backyard garage for years back in the eighties. That one is long gone!

--------How about a one owner 64 421/4spd/8-lugs/tri-power Grand Prix? White with turquoise interior with 41000 original miles. Nice older owner seems to want to sell but has had his head filled with mis-information about its value. Its not without its problems but would be a relatively easy resto as all original parts are there, but $30,000 is just out of the question. I keep in touch with him as I keep hoping he will see the light before something disasterous happens to it...........Bill S

Second owner (since 1972) unrestored, all original (except for wrong carb) 1969 Z-28. Flat hood, blue w/white stripes, approx 70k miles. I have been trying to buy this since 1978. 1969 FG Yenko Chevelle ( same owner since at least 1985), now under restoration. Both in Western PA/Pittsburgh area.

Re: undiscovered cars

Two years ago, I heard about an old Camaro drag car in a backyard. I found the car and it happened to be a real 1968 Z/28. It had Mighty Mouse lettered on the side and I could have bought it for $500.00. The car was very rough but did have the title. I didn't think the car was savable but I watched it sell on E-bay later for $3200. I think someone even posted photos of it on this site.

I love these hidden car stories!
I know of a 1972 Z28 sitting since late 70s in a neighboring town... Dark Green on Black, black stripes 4-spd, Possibly for sale. My neighbor has a Delorean (sp?) sitting at least for the last 17-20 years.

Re: undiscovered cars

I have been after this car since 1997. 1970 Nova L78, M21 4 speed, Forest Green, rubber floor mat, 20,200 miles. The car has been with it's second owner since 1971. Original motor is out of it in the garage while he had a 427 under the hood racing it. Orig paint etc. Car has been sitting out for a few years now so it needs restored. The owner has all the paperwork and orig window sticker and many vintage pics of it while he was at the strip in the early 70's. The original selling dealer was Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet in Elmhurst, ILL. Oh and it IS NOT FOR SALE, he is gonna fix her up some day! Yeah right! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

How about a FG Yenko Camaro buried up to the posts in a farmer's field with no VIN or trim tag on it because they are on another FG car? Oops, wasn't supposed to bring that one up!

There is a DY Y Chevelle hidden somewhere within a 40 mile radius of me, my brother and I are trying to find the magic farmer who owns it.

I know these sound pretty sarcastic, but I am serious.

About 4 years ago, a friend and I discovered a 1967 Corvette: roadster, 427-400 HP, red with white and black interior still in the possesion of the original owner that worked at the Corvette plant when the car was built. Parked in the garage since 1975 and was sold to help pay for the son's college tuition. 25K bought the 31,000 mile car.

There was/is a Cortez silver L78 70 Nova with under 20k miles on it close to me.Sold new at Mancuso Chevrolet in Skokie....not sure if he still lives there or if it actually is even in the garage anymore...haven't been in touch for several years and each time I go by no one is around.I knew his younger brother who had the 70 Nova with an LT 1 in it that I can't confirm because I can't find him either....also sold at Mancuso...wish I could remember if it was a factory LT 1 or built to LT 1 specs. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

There is a house near where my brother lives. In the drive way sat a 78 Z28, 70 SS 396 Chevelle, 70 RS Z/28 and a 71 SS Chevelle convertible. I watched them all rust away. Once I was chased a way but most other times no one answered the door. Cars a gone now. Probably sunk right thru to the ground. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Rick you know about this one.

Found another house that has what looks to be 2 67-68 Firebirds under tarps and a 64 or 65 Comet rolling chassis.

Years ago on a vacation I found a 69 SS 350 pace car in back of a restaurant. Just sitting there among some other older cars. Owner wasn't budging at the time. Follow up phone calls didn't work either.

After taking my son for a walk a few years ago my wife told me she thought there was a Camaro in a garage 2 blocks away. Sure enough I found that this person bought his brothers 69 RS Z/28 Olympic Gold. Currently he is restoring the car. Should be done soon.

not a chevy but is a car that rotted to piece's a 68 gto was a decent car when my dad first moved a street over from the guy but the guy would never sell and 8 yrs later when my dad moved again it was gone body wise

Re: undiscovered cars

There are several rotting away within a couple miles of my house. One guy has two 40 Ford Coupes, a 70 Chevy truck and three Corvettes. The Corvettes are a 58, a 63 split window and a 71. I talked to the owner a little over a year ago. The 58 and 63 have been sitting for over 20 years and are in pretty rough shape but the 71 looks drivable. The 58 and 63 have been covered with blue tarps for the last 3 years. Another guy has a 69 Chevelle SS sitting in a field across from his house. I looked at this car and talked to the owned last year. Everything seems to be there except the engine. The only reason the car is not rusted away is because it is sitting on a concrete slab. Same story with all these cars, no interest in selling.

Re: undiscovered cars

Back in 1985 I was driving home from a ROTC class at UC Berkeley when I took a short-cut up a residential side street. As I drove up this narrow street I noticed a big wing sticking up from a parked car. It was a Hemi Daytona (HEMI emblem on the door), white, black int. and rear body band. Stock black wheels, no wheelcovers/caps, whitewall tires, looked like the car had just been rolled out of the garage after long-term storage and parked in the street. I knew no one would believe me so I raced home, grabbed my Nikon and went back and took a picture (I'll go look for it). The car was there for about a week and then gone. Never saw it again.

Whew! Found the pic of the Hemi Daytona. Again, it was just parked in the street. I should have knocked on the door but I was a poor college student in 1985. I probably could have gotten this car for what? 10K in 1985? Maybe it's still there, rolled back into the garage after I grabbed this picture...

There is a Blue Hemi Superbird, original owner, with 6K-7K miles in Wilmington NC, owner still gets this one out and stretches its legs a little. There is a 66 427(horsepower unknown)Corvette Coupe, Red, with less than 300 miles, all tags in place, I have never actually seen this car, but my dads first cousin lives in the town where it is and he has seen it, supposedly the mans son bought and then died in Vietnam, don't what has ever been offered for it or if you can even approach the owners, this car is a local legend in the area and its parked in the same place the son left it, its located in Elizabethtown, NC which is about 30 minutes from Wilmington.

And the lose of my life...@ 9 years ago 67 427 roadster, nasau blue, white top, interior, headrest buckets, knock-offs, sidepipes, 30k miles, needing resto for $10K,
it had been at a shop, out of owners possesion for years...he got it home and had a change of heart...wanted $12K, I said OK...he backed out again...and a few months later sold it to someone else https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif

'70 LS6 El Camino, M-22 4sp, blue on black, no vinyl top, no cowl induction, sitting in a garage unmoved since the '80's, engine possibly seized from lack of use. I'm trying to come up with an angle, as I don't think money is a motivator. The toughest scenario: I'm told he's a tough guy to get a read on, and he "probably still has the first penny he made" even though he has had a good job for many years. Re: undiscovered cars

The morel to this story is don't take anything for granted. I and the group of guys I run with here in south Texas are always actively looking for undiscovered muscle cars. About a month ago an older lady here in Katy called a friend of mine and told him she had a 68 Corvette that had been setting, un touched in her garage since her husband died 9 years early. She said she wanted it out of her garage wouldn't consider anything less than 20,000.00. He told her he was not that interested but would try to come by and take a look at it. He had just opened a new body shop so that never happened. Two weeks later she called back and ask him if he was going to come by. He told her he was sorry and would try to get by there the next day. That didn't happen ether. Two weeks later she called back and said if he didn't want to look at the car could he give her the name of someone that would come out and look at it. He told her he would come by around lunch that day. Well, when he got there she opened the garage and there sat a 53,000 original mile, totally numbers matching, totally original right down to the plug wires, blue on blue, original paint ,1967 427 Tri-power Corvette Coup with side pipes . She was the original owner, had the original keys and every piece of documentation there was to have for the car. He told her the car was worth more than 20,000.00. Her response was she wanted 20,000.00 and it out of here garage ASAP. If he didn't want to buy to please give her the name of someone that would. Needless to say the Corvette has a new owner. Stories like this make me keep looking.

I think it was 1983 had a weird lead about a old Vette and a Elcamino...sitting in a backyard in Renton...was told the guy was a old recluse that was a gold miner or something like that and was never around...house sat in a weird spot where you could not see the yard or anything..well after driving around all day and pulling into peoples driveways then pulling out...we hit the mother load!!! there was this black Vette and right next to it a black Elcamino...both were very nice and were outside but didnt look like they had been there forever as our weather would have really put the hurt on them...anyway I go straight to the Vette the thing is perfect just dirty..I opened the door and it smelled brand new and was perfectly stock inside only thing it had 3' wide red aftermarket belts..at least I think they were not stock..I hit the hood release and opened it up and about crapped my pants it was a fuelie and you could eat off the motor...word was he wanted 2G cash for some digging equipment....well here I am 20 something about 50 bucks to my name and a '67 Camaro as my only car...what do you do???? sleep on the porch until the crazy guy comes home...call in sick everyday and not get paid...go sell the Camaro....my intial thought was to chain myself to the Vette and sleep next to it..I was going to fight for it!! well I stayed there as much as I could everyday and night after work for a week trying to catch the guy home and try to figure out what he needed to swing a deal... one night I pulled in and the big patch of yellow grass showing brought a tear to my eye....to this day I still think about that car... about another week and the Elcamino was gone...there have been a few other wild deals but thats the cherry that got away.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif

I am not even going to get into discussing the car or cars I just went to jail over recently attempting to get legally titled in the wrong way because I have no desire to catch the flack it will cause. The ones that have not been giving me hell will be those that will a chance to buy. I will just wait until I manage to get it done the right way. I will mention the Elephant Dart (Hemi)that has had the same owner since he worked for Hurst/Demming building the things. Can be seen at Milan every summer racing unless it is torn down for rebuild. The owner is so shy he barely ever speaks, but put him in the staging lanes in that car and it is like Clark Kent jumping into a phone booth. If you have never heard this, while putting the Hemi in those Darts they were made to fit with a sledge hammer on the inner fenders. One of Detroits finest hours at enginneering. For the Ford guys a Barn not to far from Stanton Dragway holds a 63 1/2 Galaxie 427 side oiler lightweight, and a 64-66? Comet Caliente factory lightweight with the 427 also. Twin to the car Dyno Don raced. Both were just inherited by an 18 year old kid with nose rings and purple hair, can be bought, I am just waiting to win the lotto.

That NASCAR 'Bird is one of two left. The other belongs to King RIchard and is in his museum. This one still has the crossram max wedge in it and runs HARD! Was raced originally by Ramo Stott of Burlington Iowa. Now owned by a gentleman in Ohio who brings it out every once in a while. Not exactly a "lost" car I guess.....but most don't know it still exists or will see it. The wing was cropped out....did you notice the other "birds and Daytonas in the background? There were about 10 of them in Burlington that day. Kim----does this event look familiar to you?

Re: undiscovered cars

Cars in my neighborhood in the mid 70's:

1969 Z/28 Camaro, Cortez Silver - mine!
1968 SS Camaro, big block, aluminum heads - next door neighbor
1969 SS Camaro, 396 Gold automatic - buddy's
1969 SS Camaro, 396, light blue, orange hockey stick
1966 GTO - neighbor's cousin's
1969 Camaro 427 - probably was a COPO - belonged to the guy who owned the pool hall
1969 Camaro ragtop, ralley green, small block automatic
1969 Chevelle SS 454, black on black - buddy's
1969 Roadrunner, blue on black - buddy's
1968 Chevelle SS, 396, blue on black - buddy's
1970 Cuda, 340, 4 speed, black on black - buddy's
1970 Duster, 340 4 speed, blue on black - buddy's
1970 Boss 302 Mustang - Orange, 4 speed - friend of my father's
1964 Galaxie XL 500 ragtop - father's

196? Mustang fastback - white w/blue stripes like a Shelby. Rick Kopeck's brother was my basketball coach at the time and it was the car he drove (not sure if he owned it) - probably was a real Shelby.

Many, many, more.

My point is that although these were only considered to be "used cars" at the time there were tons of them out there. I don't belive my neighborhood (in Norwalk, Connecticut) had an unusual amount of muscle cars, there were just lots around. Nobody was really even that into it (i.e. mechanics, racers, etc...), it's just what we drove.

Oh, there was also a Yenko Duece, dark blue (Fathom, Dusk?) that belonged to a friend of a friend running around town. Not sure who it belonged to but I do remember seeing it behind a house, no engine, as late as 1980. I wish I could remember where that house was.

No, this one never sat outside. However, there is a green 1970 SS Chevelle sitting about 50 feet off the road with a tree or two growing in or around it on "Conway-Wallrose Road" in western PA. I first saw it in 1978, and at that time it was NICE . I saw it again last summer...it is not so nice now. And yes, everyone I know that has seen it over the last 27 years has tried to buy it although it may not be worth much now.

I think it was a 396, I will be in Pittsburgh in March and I will try to look it over. Over the years some parts have been snatched off it or maybe sold I do not know but I will try to get some info. I will say that if I remember correctly it looked stock/unmolested the first time I saw it (1978). If I can I will get the VIN.
