Hone-O-Drive questions
I was directed towards this post for information on the Hone-O-Drive units used in the early 70's on some of the muscle cars. I purchased a nice old Ford F-100 (75) a couple years ago. It came with a Hone-O-Drive unit attached to the 9 inch rear. The seller also gave me another full unit, plus another casing, a box of new planetary gears, etc. My question is the other unit has couplers on both ends, whereas the one on my truck attaches directly to the differential. Is this other unit the type they used on other makes/models of cars? It would have to be coupled with a drive shaft on both ends. The only numbers I find, other than what appears to be a serial number, is L-1000. Oh, the truck also came with a Dixco HT/X hood mounted tach in like new condition, it was quite a find. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry

Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
Thanks Mike, that info helps a lot, I'm guessing this unit attached directly to the yoke coming off the tailhousing. The shifter in the photo looks to be the same one he gave me with the extra drive unit.

Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
The one on the truck,is just for Fords--bolting directly on the diff. housing and replacing the pinion gear.--The other one you have is a universal set-up-- https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif find--

Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
Joe,
I'd love to see one of those installed on a car. Did you order your Chevelle with one? What gears are you running? Verne |
Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
Verne-----------No the car wasn't ordered with the Hone unit--car was ordered with 456s---Motion didn't offer the Hone unit until early '70----I had Motion install the Hone unit along with 488's--(not to void my factory warranty) late '70.

[ QUOTE ]
Motion didn't offer the Hone unit until early '70 [/ QUOTE ] The November 1969 issue of Hi-Performance CARS details the installation of the Hone overdrive into a '69 Motion Camaro. Given the magazine lead times, it was probably done sometime in the Summer of 69. My '69 BM Camaro got one, but mine is a very late '69 car (10E build). |
Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
Well I'll tell ya https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif---I know the unit wasn't offered as of 7/69 because I would have gotten it instead of crusing the sreets with 456's and I was told there would be an Overdrive unit available later in the year--And to be honest, after the summer of '69 the unit went on the back burner Until I saw it offered by Motion in a mag early '70 ( Jan/Feb )---so given the time lag of putting the mag together-Motion could have been official offering units to the public by advertisement late '69 (Nov/Dec) ----So COPO your Camaro could have come with it late '69--Paperwork might be a little more reliable than my memory, but I'll stick with this version for now https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Here's a couple of old catalogs--They were both from Motion---- First is the one I picked up before I had my unit put in--You can see the phrase --Hone-o-Drive-used in the earlier catalog--In the '72 you see the phrase Hone overdrive--No big deal just some info--Tomatoes/Tamotoes https://www.yenko.net/attachments/169629-od1.jpg

Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
My guess is they started doing it around 10/69. The big article on the Hone install was in the 11/69 issue of CARS. It reads as it's new and available and the install shown and pics featured were the '69 COPO/Motion SS427 Camaro.

Re: Hone-O-Drive questions
With the magazine lead times, I bet the article was done even earlier perhaps in Aug. or Sept. of '69.
