Harrell Street Vega

Found this photo in an old Car Craft special. No story, just the photo and the caption stating it's a Dick Harrell conversion. There's those K-H wheels again!

Anybody seen one? Anybody got one?

From my understanding of this car, it was a one-off. It was hurried together for a magazine article, and then dropped.

Don Hardy later used similar stuff, for his Vega "kits". Dick's Vega conversion was the prototype for this kit. Here is a pic of the advertisement Don Hardy used for his kits, sorry for the poor quality. I have been told Don Hardy made more than a few of these kits for sale to mail order customers.

Don't you just love V8 Vegas? There's something about those things that is just cool. I'd love to build one some day.

Re: Harrell Street Vega

I had pics of the Vega in question later being tubbed out and converted into a race car and run by an associate or friend of DH appr. 71-72 era. The paint job stayed the same.
Article was in one of the Superstock or Drag racing USA type mags.It was not in P/S but in one of the lesser classes like Modified productions etc.

Well, it looks like it was given a 400 SB. I wonder what the engine spec's were/are.

Ken, interesting ad. The Vega I did a few years ago (Motion look-alike) was built from a kit similar to what you pictured, including front spindles, headers, engine/trans mounts, and even came with that pro-stock type hood. I discarded the Hardy hood and used a Motion/L-88 hood instead.

Re: Harrell Street Vega

Tom,

Sounds like your old vega was a lot of fun. What happened to it? What year was it? Those old Hardy hoods are a dime a dozen anyway, right? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Harrell Street Vega

Ken, I believe a '74 or so. And I never really got it sorted out before I sold it. Had trash in the gas tank and kept burning up the electric fuel pump(s). I sold it to Guarise, who said it was a lot of fun. Has changed hands a couple of more times since I sold it to MG. It was at Fall Vettefest in 2003.

Was a neat looking car, with the L-88 hood and rear ZL-1 flairs, spoilers, Cragars, etc. Mo built the small block in it, which sounded healthy, and it had a nice turbo 400 trans with a narrowned 4:56 posi 12 bolt.

Tom, I remember that Vega at VetteFest, it looked pretty scary fast. I've seen several "race' project Vega's over the past couple of years either on ebay, or in the web, with similar type equipment. It would be a fun car.

Re: Harrell Street Vega

Yes I believe it did have the
"c" clip eliminators with 4.56 gear set. There was also an "H" Stamped into the the Housing/Cover Flang.

Re: Harrell Street Vega

I sold one of these Don Hardy Vega 12 bolts just a few years ago. It had a GM 4.56 gear set, 4 series carrier, 30 spline UN-tapered axles, GM 4-bolt axle retainers and giant 11 inch brake drums. I bought it dirt cheap and was so impressed by it that I tried to find a nice Vega just to stick it in. Never did find one worthy. It ended up being narrowed for a drag car. Regrets.

Re: Harrell Street Vega

No doubt about it, these are very fun cars when set up with V-8s. I fooled around with them back in the eighties and they are a blast to drive. Motion, Harrell, Don Hardy all thought so. Almost feels like you're wearing the car instead of riding in it!
