Cool car... Anyone know any history about this Model?

Nice car but good luck trying to get that number. Who put the 455 emblems on the fenders? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Their off a 70 bonneville. Wagners prices have really jumped since they made that mistake and sold that Ram iv Judge last year for 30k. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: One Wild Pontiac

Re: 455 emblem. Not there if GTO but if LeMans then probably as shown. '71 was different. Didn't look to see if hood said Ram Air as all '72's required the T-41 nose and Ram Air when 455HO was ordered. Would like to see sn as to see the X in it. Should read 2D66X if 455HO. According to Dan Jensen's registry there were actually 7 of these GT converts built. 5 w/at and 2 w/mt. Also couldn't see if 12 bolt or not.

I know a couple of people who have these cars and they do not have that emblem.

Steve_Hoog 12-27-2004 06:12 PM

Re: One Wild Pontiac

I have to say these 455 emblems are correct also, I have seen other pics of them on a car, and I believe I have seen two hardtops in real life with the emblems on them. It's a very cool set up with the GT out of the stripe there on the front like that and the 455 emblems, the Pontiac engineers hit a the mark on design with that one.

Steve,

I have mixed emotions with the '71/72 stripes. I do like the eyebrow and sword both. Mine has no stripes. Just a plain Jane. There was a '72 in Kodiak years ago. Gold with black stripe w/ black bucket interior. 350/350 but very nice car. I'm sure it is long gone. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

It seems they changed the emblem location and GT location depending on year and engine. But, all engines except 455 were called out on rocker panel on front fender. The 455 and 455HO moved around depending on the car in '71 but have seen several '72's with the emblem shown on them. That emblem was in the grill in '71 and depicted the standard 455. Mistake made on mine as no emblems/cid callouts anywhere. Made for fun times on the street. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Here is picture of it back then. Or at least part of it.

Re: One Wild Pontiac

I don't know the ends and outs of the 71-2 but I love the GT next to the 455 emblem, it's different and cool. I've now seen several, it's something you remember and stands out.

That is one sweet looking car you got there, love the slots!!! Post more.

Re: One Wild Pontiac

The 455 badge should be on 455/250 cars. The HO should not have this badge.

Steve_Hoog 12-27-2004 11:59 PM

Re: One Wild Pontiac

I would almost say 100% the two I saw were 455 HO cars??

JLP 12-28-2004 12:24 AM

Re: One Wild Pontiac

The 455HO was on the spoiler ends on those with spoiler on GTO or on front fender of non spoiler cars. It was a decal. In '71 or '72 the hood read Ram Air on ram air cars.

In '71 the 455HO was in one location on Judge, different on GTO/LeMans and GT-37/T-37 was different yet. On '72 455HO call out was as described above but don't have assembly manual to verify location.

Also the manifold is painted. It was aluminum but painted. Beginning in '71 no Pontiac had chrome under the hood and entire engine was painted one color. Bonneville etc may have had some chrome but not on engine. Maybe on lid but have never seen an original with chrome anything under the hood.

Also noted that it does not say LeMans anywhere on it. I believe there should be a LeMans emblem somewhere. If memory serves me right after 32 years ago https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif it should say LeMans on trunk. I would like to see serial number for the car. That is the tell tale if it is a 455HO or standard 455. For that kind of money they need to give more information. Boy, wonder what my T-37 is worth? Also if an original 455 car it will have a 12 bolt.

Steve_Hoog 12-28-2004 12:32 AM

Re: One Wild Pontiac

I tell you what, I will take one of each of the cars you described. Then all will be settled.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

You are way past me on all this, I know I saw two HO Lemans and that is the only for sure part. I strongly believe they had the 455 emblem, maybe I can get down and take some pics. Both are still here.

This yellow car that started this thread is one sharp ride, and I would die to have it.

steve, both of my 72 lemans ram air 455-ho cars have these emblems. all of the ho lemans cars that i have seen in 72 have these. also notice that in the same 1972 pontiac sales manual under the endura styling option code 602-upc T41 that is says the endura option is quote " available on all lemans series with a v-8 engine. NOT available with the GT option or lemans station wagon with wood grain side panels." this is NOT correct because one of my cars is a 72 lemans SPORT/GT with the 455-ho ram air (which has to be the endura option). don is clearly wrong. gary

Jack can you verify or deny the GT cut out in the stripe front side of the tire is correct? I think I've seen that somewhere before but can't find it yet?

Re: One Wild Pontiac

Steved,

Had to go out for a while so missed the pm. A couple of things to remember on this. In both '71 & '72 when the 455HO was ordered the call out could be located in various locations. In '71 any of 3 places as noted above depending on the car. T-37 & GT-37 were the same. LeMans/LeMans Sport/GT0 were the same except for The Judge which was different yet. I have seen the 455HO in the correct location on the T-37, incorrect location and completely missing. The sword stripes as well as the eyebrow stripes could be ordered on any A body with any engine as long as it was a 2 dr in '71. On the GT-37 the GT was part of the stripe. The T-37 could not be ordered with the t-41 endra nose but could be ordered on any 2 dr LeMans in '71.

In '72 you could order the t-41 nose on any 2 dr A body as the 455HO was optional also on any 2 dr A body. However, if you ordered the 455HO it was a mandatory option as was ram air, dual exhaust and hd 3 speed at a minimum.

In '71 the requirements for the GT-37 were as follows.
1. Any V8 was mandatory to order the GT package.
2. HD 3 speed trans.
3. Vinyl Stripes
4. Ralley II wheels w/o trim rings
5. G70X14 raised white leter tires
6. Hood pins
7. GT-37 identification on front fenders and trunk lid
8. GTO dual exhaust w/chrome tips through cutouts on rear valance
That was it. You had to order anything else including carpets, posi, guages, ps,pb, pw, pdl or optional vinyl interior. It was an entry level car.

The stripe was solid on the GT-37, beginning with the 71 1/2, with the GT-37 cut out in the stripe and Pontiac below it on the front fender. Before that it was the eyebrow stripes. They were 2 color vs 3 color for Judge. These stripes could be ordered for any 2 dr A body.

In '70 the stripe was the '69 Judge stripe. This stripe could also be ordered on regular '70 GTO's.

In '72 the T-37 was dropped and the LeMans became the entry level car. (not sure of carpets in '72). The GT-37 became the LeMans GT. The only thing above that appears to be missing from '71 is the hood pins.

The biggest difference in '72 is that the T-41 endura nose could be ordered with any 2 dr V8. The stripes and cid call outs differed depending on the engine and with or with out the T-41 and type of car. Do not think you could get the t-41 on the Luxury LeMans but not sure on that one.

There were the following combinations just on 455HO on how stripe could be ordered and may appear differently as well as call out could be located differently.

455HO/Endura nose GTO
455HO/Endura nose non GTO
W/GT
W/O GT
All others
W/GT
W/O GT

Belair

Back when I was a wee lad running the streets and chasing girls in my GTO, my best bud at the time had a 71 GT-37. It was cool and all but would we think, "man would be much better just to have a GTO".

I was a complete idiot for that one!!! I would give anything to go back in time to procure that car. I think he ended up getting it hauled off by the city for letting it sit too long in his yard in a non running condition.

Steved,

If you go into the '70-'72 GTO, LeMans, Tempest part of the PY forum there is a lot if information. May have to search under either T-37 or GT-37. I can fax to you Dan's '71-'72 455HO registry if you would like. It is 10 yrs old. Not sure he has done any more since then. The registry deals only with NON GTO A BODIES with 455HO.

Hey Guys, new to the site! that`s my white lemansgt 455 h/o, (it has the X in the vin) it is one of five, the 455 emblems on the fender are correct, the car still had the original paint on it when I got it, and the emblems were there. it was born in ga. and it remains here! I found it in some guys back yard with 5 other gto`s! bought them all for 1000.00!!! all 69 thru 72, boy was I surprised when I saw the X in the vin!! I then undertook the frame off resto. now I enjoy it with my wife, I also have many other 70 - 71 gto`s I`m in the resto biz. great site! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif

Welcome to Yenko....

That is a sweet car indeed, luck was with you. Did the orIginal paint sport the sword decals with the GT cut out in front of the wheel? I some what assume they did, but would be nice if you could verify that since there is nothing else to go by at this time.
