Rob,
Have you stripped the paint off the firewall yet? Pay particularly close attention the the recessed area of the firewall behind the distributor, the area above and to the passenger side of the wiring gutter and the top of the drivers side cowl area where the hood stop is mounted. Almost every leads car I have torn down or seen close up had similar markings in that area. Just curious what yours may have. Thanks for sharing your photos. I can expect copies in the mail............? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: frame paint

The hood in the background is a fiberglass ram air hood for my friends '71 442,I'll look to see what it says when I go back out to the garage. Mr. 70, you are always welcome to stop over, but I may just put you to work looking over the body for codes etc... So far ,the only writng that I see on the firewall is D88 in white just above the heater core cover's left edge, and 48 in yellow behind the brake booster. There is a lot of tar like overspray on the heater hose cover as well as the surrounding firewall, there may be more writing underneath it???

Re: frame paint

I had my 69 Frame painted with PPG's DelStar Acrylic Enamel, using the appropriate flattner and hardner. I was curious about PPG's OMNI line after I read your post so asked a factory rep at PPG headquaters....
Can you provide info regarding his comments and how much flattner and hardner did you use with the MTK acrylic urethane enamel if that was the case ?????

"OMNI is PPG's lowest priced line. It is used primarily on older used cars, trucks and tractors, etc. It's quality is not as good as DAR. PPG does NOT have a recommendation to flatten OMNI MAE acrylic enamel. You can however, flatten OMNI MTK acrylic urethane enamel.

Re: frame paint

How did you strip the frame? Media blasting, wire wheel...?

Re: frame paint

Take caution when removing the paint off the firewall. The body series number is usually in the area around the gutter, there are a number of check marks, paint code (you already found) and the 4 digit job sequence number (it will match your build sheet) in the area behind the distributor. Most but not all were applied to the firewall prior to painting.

Leeds cars are (from my research) the only cars that used the undercoating around the heater box. Pretty ugly and messy but they used it. It is also very common to have undercoating overspray in many areas. Nice to know about the D88 mark. I don't recall seeing that on there before. Neat. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: frame paint

That D88 code I've seen there on Leeds built Chevelles that were NON ZL-2,but with customer ordered D88 stripes added.
But Robs is a ZL-2 optioned Chevelle,so that's...odd.

Re: frame paint

I used a wire wheel to remove the remnants of the factory tar-like substance that the frame was coated in,then blasted the rest with a media called black magnum which is approx $ 4.00 per 40lb bag at Menards.

k92 12-12-2004 07:39 AM

Re: frame paint

Yes I still have the blue chevelle, probably goin gto sell it to make more room for the green car, Didn't you actually look at the car before I bought it?

Re: frame paint

Yes, I was seriously considering it but found another car instead. It still had the build sheet when I looked at it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif
