Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
I just got the Stripper wheels mounted on the Camaro. I let my painter prepare the wheels. The wheels are not the exact color and I am not too happy https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif. I can either have the wheels repainted a more correct color or leave them how they are. They came out perfect just in the wrong color. Regardless, I would like to know what you think! Be critical please!
Thanks guys. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif -Dan I am sorry for the big pictures- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/a7d2a20a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/68a3761c.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/db0949f8.jpg |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
You asked for it..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
hate the color...might look better glass beaded and bare or painted cast gray or aluminum https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif The wheels just don't strike me as the type that should be body colored. |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Dave... The wheels are not body color. Trust me if I asked for Autumn Gold they would be the exact dead-on color. The wheels are supposed to a brown/gold color not a yellow/gold color.
Don't feel bad Dave, my buddy said the exact same thing. |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Why not first try taking the gold off the two outside "rings"? Maybe that will be just enough contrast, and, provide some definition of the wheel.

Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Dan,
I agree with DaveC68. They don't look good in gold. Change them now or you will always be kicking yourself. They would look better in silver/gray. |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
I don't like them at all.Tone them down.
Now These I like. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif https://www.yenko.net/attachments/925...%20%283%29.JPG |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Color seems too orangy for some reason....I agree with Sixtiesmuscle though....clean off the flats on the outer lip after you re-color them....aren't the tops of the spokes supposed to be natural too ?

They are too dark, and look to "clear coated". have them sprayed a lighter shade of gold,
and use a single-stage semi gloss paint. Some Wide Ovals would't hurt it either. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/108038-196.jpg |

[/ QUOTE ] The painter tried applying some clear over the exposed magnesium and it did not take. He did this for protection as he feared that the metal would oxidize with enough exposure to the elements. You guys have to remember... I DRIVE this car whenever I get the opportunity! I am not going to worry if the wheel splashes in a puddle or anything. This is the one car that never rides in the trailer. I have talked to other members of the board who have KH Wheels on their Camaros and I have recieved information from both sides of the spectrum. If you look on LVCamaro's 1970 DH Camaro or Kim Howie's FG Camaro Drag car that is the correct shade of gold. Although, the biggest difference between the wheels is the outer ring. On LV's wheels the ring is exposed, while on Kim's they are painted. Mine will remain painted -- at least for now. BelAir, The spokes on the wheels are not bare metal (not in the research I have done). Thanks very much for the feedback! A call to my painter will be made tomorrow sometime. I will keep you guys posted. -Dan |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
fyi, they are actually aluminum not magnesium. Kelsey also made a version called the "Satin Stripper" that was painted black with the raised portions (including the tops of the spokes) left bare.

Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Did K-H actually sell gold painted wheels, or, were they either bare Strippers, or, Satin Strippers in black/bare? I thought the gold wheels were painted by Harrell for some of HIS cars.

Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
You can get a great real gold color for your wheels by using powdered bronze in clear. It is the same color as BBS and Yongblod uses on thier wheels. Then use a light clear coat on them. Ask the paint counter man what clear is actually clear. Every brand is a little different. Some are a gold or honey tint and not actually crystal clear. The wrong clear can change the way they look.
It looks like your painter went the extra mile and used some pearl in the color and that just doesn't look right on a mag. Good luck Pantera |

They should NOT be all gold. Originally the rim faces were machined off, leaving the aluminum exposed... its not that hard to wipe off the lips once in awhile when you wash the car, and unless youre driving through a salt mine, they aren't going to corrode unless you totally neglect them for a year. Heres a good close up of the correct color and surface treatment. Lighten up the gold, flatten out the gloss a little, and remove the paint from the 2 outermost lips and they'll look like Strippers are supposed to look. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Joe...how do you know it is the proper color ?? Did you find a recipe somewhere ?
|
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
The color was matched from an original nearly NOS wheel.
|
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
Yeah but, WHO painted the wheels that color gold?? Was it the K-H factory, or, somebody at Harrell's shop? For that matter, do we know for sure that the previous owner of the car didn't paint them to "match" Harrell's race car wheels?
Are we to assume that every Stripper wheel sold by the Harrell shop was painted gold? |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
I like those pictures of Steve's wheels. I got the same batch of pictures in a very generous e-mail from him (thanks LV!). If I remember correctly -- The color gold was matched from a can of spray paint. The original color was found on an NOS set of wheels that came with Steve's DH Camaro.
SixtiesMuscle -- I would find it hard to believe that the KH factory painted the wheels. The advertisment of the wheels (with the mustang drag car center stage) does not display the wheels in any sort of color; just a bare metal look. I think that DH and FG painted the wheels. Spoke to the painter, he said he can paint right over the exsisting color. What should I do with color? Bare metal/silver type or gold? If he mixed some Autumn Gold and painted the wheels it would not look bad either! |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
I'm still curious what Joe thinks about who painted the wheels gold. The whole "NOS" concept doesn't fly. That means that K-H was supposed to have painted them gold. I assume Kim Howie has also done some research on this subject, so, any thoughts Kim?

Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
These Satin Strippers are on Ebay now. SATIN STRIPPERS
When these rims were painted, either Gold or black, were the Top of the Spokes left unpainted? |
Re: Wheels Mounted - What do you think?
I believe the Satins had the unpainted flats on the spokes just like the pic in the ebay ad.
