Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
Can anyone verify if the driveshaft stripes found on late 60's GM vehicles were sprayed-on or applied with a brush while the shaft was spinning? THNX!

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
I believe it was a brush as the shaft was turning.

From the few I have seen, they did not appear to be brushed on.

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
They should have been brushed on. I would be interested in pictures of original stipes anyone has found on Novas.

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
When I stripped down my driveshaft to bare metal you could see the 3 paint brush marks etched in the metal next to one another, each mark about 1/2/-3/4 inch wide ( free hand)---The ends of the marks meet pretty even, so I'd guess the shaft was being turned, while the brush was pressed against it.--

Thanks everyone. Great help - I plan to brush mine back on.

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
Gents, in all do respect.........
Where in the assembly process did the shaft get painted 'free hand' while it was spinning? What was it spinning in or on? |
Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
I agree.
The soul purpose of the striped shaft, was so the line worker could easily identify it from the bin, during assembly, then apply it to the Vehicle being built. I still believe spraying the stripes onto the shaft was done in a few plants by some. |
Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif---I'm not saying the driveshaft was turning At a certain RPM--I'M just saying the brush/swab marks on my driveshaft looked as if the brush or swab was pressed against the driveshaft as the driveshaft was turned. The brush marks themselves looked like someone stuck his finger in a can of paint and went around the shaft.---Just an observation.

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
I am guessing but I would think it would make sense that who ever built the shaft or did the balance job on it would have put the paint stripes on. That way there would not be a mistake on the color for each length shaft.
The shafts would then be ready to go into the rack by color and the line worker could just grab the proper color when the car it went to came along. So it makes sense to me that they would do it after building or doing the bal on the shaft while it was still in the lathe and they could spin it by hand to apply the color. I doubt that it was a brush that did it but a pad/swab with a tube of color behind it that was hanging just above the end that they put the color on? |

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
I saw a Van Nuys SS Chevelle, that had less then 22K miles. It had overspray inches away from the VERY smooth stripes,as if to indicate it had a template over it,and then absorbed the overspray farther down where it was exposed without the template.
I saw a Camaro driveshaft at Jefferson, that was similar to this. The seller said the car it came off,was a Van Nuys Camaro,in the Car corral that day.. |

Here are some shots of an LS6 driveshaft, definately brushed on. The paint was wet when the driveshaft was set on a table after balancing/striping and the paint ran lengthwise on the driveshaft.

I believe the Novas were also brushed. Deuces are yellow - green - yellow from what we've seen.

Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
Rick,
The driveshaft was found with other LS6 parts from an auto LS6 car. I don't have any vehicle information as far as plant, etc. Mark |
Re: Driveshaft stripes - sprayed on or brushed?
As far as colors go - Mine had three: orange red and greenish/teal. 3/4" wide, 1/4" distance between
