Ahh, the good old days when young guys drove sixties street machines and not fart-piped Civics. But all good things do come to an end. I still regret not participating and getting one of those red "CC Nats" decals put on my '67 Camaro's windshield. I went to the Nats at Cal Expo in Sacramento back in 1984 and it was spectacular but I left my car at home because I didn't think it'd be nice enough to make the scene. Nowadays anyone can bring the worst roach in the world and it draws a crowd.

Frank-
Here's your answer! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

In addition to being the preeminent celebration of the Pro Street movement, the annual Street Machine Nationals also has the distinction of being the car show thrown out of the most cities in America. Well, maybe “asked not to return” is a better way to put it. How could a car show get into so much trouble? You’d have to have been at one of the early events to understand, but let’s put it this way: Throughout most of its 25-year history, uncontrolled burnout contests held anywhere, anytime, were the norm; shirts were optional for men and women; and the highlight of one of the first Nationals held in Indianapolis was a riot that resulted in a police car going up in flames. And guess what? Car Craft started it all.

That’s right. Launched during the high point of the Pro Street movement in 1977, the goings-on at the Street Machine Nationals mirrored the essence of the era’s over-the-top proclivities as reported on by this magazine. The disco era was in full swing and so were fat tires, chromed blowers soaring through holes in hoods, and gaudy pastel paint jobs emblazoned with garish graphics. But just as Pro Street has mellowed, so has the annual car event that became virtually synonymous with Car Craft and the street machine ethic. While we eventually parted ways with the show in the early ’90s, its organizers continued the tradition of over-the-top events even as it be-bopped to a series of locations across the Midwest, including DuQuoin and East St. Louis, Illinois, and Springfield, Missouri.

After a one-year cooling-off period in 2000, the Street Machine Nationals, wiser and more level-headed in its old age, was welcomed back to Indianapolis for its 25th Anniversary. This year’s event reflected the state of the Pro Street movement: older, tamer, and less out of control.

For more information on the location and dates for next year’s Street Machine Nationals, contact The Promotion Co./Special Events, 804 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis, IN 46204-1196, 317/236-6522, www.familyevents.com.

Cool stuff for sure. A Street Machine Nats belt buckle? Way cool. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif I can remember attending a Car Craft Street Machine Nats in or around Buffalo, NY when I was still grade school, probably 1990 or so. I can remember being blown away by a full tube chassis, neon graphic'd Pro Street Beretta, which was practically a brand new car at the time. I can also remember seeing Scott Sullivan's '66 Chevy II, which I believe was built in '79, and at the time was regarded as the car that started the narrowed rear, Mickey Thompson Sportsman, blower through the hood, monochrome bumpers, satin finish aluminum centerline wheels, wheelie bars, "Pro Street" movement that as all the rage in the early 90s. I'm sure I've got some snap shots laying around somewhere, maybe I can dig them out and post them here. And I was born in '79...so that really seems like a long time ago for me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: Car Craft Street Machine Nationals "Stuff"

Yikes...back in '79 when I was catching my first glipse of daylight, the Oscar for best picture went to Kramer vs. Kramer (Hoffman & Streep) The Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series and the Steelers won the Superbowl for the 4th time. ( And neither has won one since https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif ) Perhaps worst of all...the new '79 Z28 Camaro had a whopping 175 horses...and that's if you didn't have CA emissions. If only I'd have been born 30 years earlier, I'd have been 20 years old in 1969. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif Who says it's so great to be young? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Let's not forget Rick Dobbertin's awesome '65 Nova SS with the blown, twin-turbo Rat. That car really set the Pro Street crowd on its collective ear.

Re: Car Craft Street Machine Nationals "Stuff"

I missed the first one in 77 because I didn't quite have the engine back in my Camaro at the time (did make the 77 NSRA Street Machine Nats in Minneapolis/St. Paul a month later though). I was a participant at the 1978 - 1982 CC Nats (they moved from Indy to Springfield IL in 82) and have a whole drawer full of that stuff they gave out when you registered. Frisbees, can coolers, license plate frames, buttons, etc. etc. I won a Doug Nash 5 speed trans at the 82 event - a pretty cool door prize https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

All of my Street Machine Nationals were of the West Coast variety...not near as big, but probably as much fun as Indy...Ours were held at Pomona and Devonshire Downs. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

That's it! Both the Sullivan '67 and The Dobbertin '65 just knocked me out when I first saw them in the magazines. I remember thinking that there was no way anyone could improve on, or go further than the Dobbertin '65. Jeez, 1982? It seems like just a little while ago.

These are a set of cuff links and tie bar given to the winners of the Car Craft All-Star Drag Racing Team in 1968.There were 24 catagories this year, the first, and also included "Man of the Year" and "Manufacturer of the Year".A grand total of 26 awards given out in 1968.I did have a chance to speak with a 68 award winner about these pieces, the one an only Bill Jenkins...After a nice conversation he believed only the award winners recieved this set.The "Grump" seemed sharp as a tack on this one......

The cuff links and tie bar are "totally cool, dude!" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif. It's amazing that Da' Grump is still involved in drag racing today...and doing quite well, I might add. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif
