Food For Thought....

Imagine this scenario.... You are in this hobby locating the rare cars for some collectors and finding new homes for others. One day you are contacted by someone who has decided to put together one of the nicest collections to be found. He supplies a list of ten cars to start with, many one of a kind, many with production totals less then twenty. No easy task as the list contains the ones everyone wants. So you dig in your heels and within two weeks the list is assembled, many from owners who had no interest in selling, so a great deal of time is invested working with all involved. Then your prospective new collector who has assured you that finances are no problem as money is no object. So you are patient through the next four weeks as the excuses fall upon you as the snow on the North pole. Finally, without much left to fabricate you are told that far away in another country this wannabe collector has been informed by agencies such as Interpol that you, the person who has dedicated six weeks to this challenging task of putting together a collection anyone here would find outstanding, is an international criminal who is going to run away with all your money, (that never really existed), despite many solid references and former clients. So after wasting six weeks of your time the baffling question occurs as to why.,....nothing makes sense. So now you hire someone with a clear objective mind to try and sort this no gain situation out to be told that it seems some spoiled rotten rich kid that has a issue with you that also never really existed has hired someone to waste your time, money, and irritate your resources who really did not want to sell in the first place. Any input as to who you may start pounding on first in you found your self in the center of such an scenario??????? The straw that breaks the Camels back is you never had the chance to see the tricked out chopped and channeled custom Lear Jet come roaring over your house to land at your local airport to conclude this deal. Heck, ya never know, Santa may come down the chimminey one day after all..........This is the antics of one of the new kids on the block around here. Food for thought gentlemen, Food for thought.

I have found that this new millenium has created a general atmosphere of "wasting peoples time" and a total "lack of caring and service" from a lot of people. I see it everyday in business and in my own profession. At times it does get to you and it seems to be everywhere. You never experienced this 20 or 30 years ago when service meant service and a man's word was gospel.

Six weeks of wasted time is unbelievable. I hope that eventually something good will come of it for you, whether that be some type of financial influx or meeting this person face to face for some personal gratification https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

Don you hit the nail on the head!! tough to stay up-beat when you deal with rude people....like the old song says "be happy", I stay pretty upbeat and have had many customers say wow and really appreciate good customer service today,I think it is slowly coming back around, I here more people who say they are looking more for customer care after the purchase not just the best price.

Matt, hop on your scooter and go for a long ride....you will feal better when you get home.

You have to look in the mirror on this one Mo...in this day of totally BS E-bay auctions I would think a face to face would be prudent....and a few bucks to get you started in the search...especially since I am guessing the list didn't includ 74 Buicks and Pintos....

I have helped a friend save quite a bit of cash locating cars and parts over the years. He is a good friend and his word is good. We have a future gentleman's agreement in place and I have no doubt that his word is gold. If I was brokering Up front for a cut of the pie with an unknown client I would get a deposit with the understanding that win or loose (if the cars were all located) the deposit was forfit for my time, - and get it in writing.

There are too many "baddies" out there today - unless you know who you are dealing with you gotta watch. (Just my 2cents)

I'm trying to 'imagine the scenario' there Moby, but what exactly are you trying to say? If the 'scenario' is true, isn't it just another day in the life of a high powered musclecar broker? I would also think that with your connections with the IRS, the FBI, the CIA and the local Harley club that you would have prosecuted this guy already - what's taking so long https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Marlin,
Sorry for your inability to comprehend the meaning to the post which included the word "thought", as in "think", maybe I can devise a way to re-post using picture signals so you can grasp the concept of the similarity of the unfortunate events that occoured to me as could anyone else. Even though I was not relieved of actual cash, being an accountant I would hope you can understand the concept of "opportunity cost". Six weeks of wasted time and effort as well as financial expenses could have been better spent in a more productive way. It was not a total waste however, you finally managed to make my short list should I ever be diagnosed with a terminal illness. And to think I saved you a lot of grief by not giving your phone number to the owner of the 68 Z ragtop after you spouted off the prospective selling price in public which was either a lucky guess or you heard it from the one person I mentioned it to off line who I considered a friend. Are you ever going to start minding your own affairs or is your life so boring you would have nothing to talk about. Do as you wish, just stay out of my business, for the better of all...

Re: Food For Thought....

WOW !! What a topic. I have close to 3,ooo e-mails since january 2004 on muscle cars. You want to talk about wasting time( this is why the collectors hire me),I get tire kickers and picture collectors everyday! I'm sorry that sometimes I get a call from a real buyer and I have a little attitude, becuase 10 calls before him were a-holes. I lost some nice cliets im sure this way or when you don't give a vin # or owners phone # after two minutes on the phone. I try to select the right buyer for the seller.
I'm sure I have worked with about 10+ or more of these type of guys who want a serious Muscle car(200K + dollars) and even tie the car up for weeks to find out the buyer is not buying and then lose the car to a real buyer, who is not kicking tires.I loose !! This is ALL part of the job as they say !! High profile car broker. Believe me its a kick in the head but like they say: Climb back on the horse and try again. It really stinks to put all your time into these people but it comes with the turf. Then I put a killer deal together for some lucky clients and I know why I do what I do. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gifPlease call me if you still have a list of rare cars, I might have real buyers for some of those cars you thought you were wasting your time on !!! Always looking for Rare Muscle cars

MotownMadman 07-28-2004 11:19 AM

Re: Food For Thought....

Rich,
I am glad you can understand the importance of this topic, many people really are not aware what an agent can go through trying to do an effective professional job so that both buyer and seller are pleased, as well as all the BS cars out there not ending up a dissapointment for someone. While many here are old pros at this hobby, many are also relative newcomers who should have the protection of 35 years of muscle car knowledge to aid in a purchase or sale which in this day and age the financial aspect has surpassed what many real estate agents handle. If I put together a deal I also accept and warranty the authenticity of the car and it's componants taking full liability for any mistakes to be discovered later on the car. As anyone here would know, that is a very time consuming research situation which becomes what I call an enterance into "The Red Zone" after finding out the so called buyer was nothing but BS with no intention of buying anything more then a die cast collection rather then the real thing. I was asked to put together a list of fifteen cars to start, with more to follow. I had the list together in three weeks including owner history on most. The following is a list of what I had assembled:

1 - 68 Z-28 Soft Top
2 - 70 Hemi Cuda Soft Top
3 - 69 Baldwin Camaro
4 - 69 Yenko Nova
5 - 69 Trans Am Soft Top and HT pair
6 - 70 Hemi Cuda 44 miles
7 - 70 Chevelle LS6 Soft top
8 - 68 Hemi Dart
9 - 67 Z-28
10 - 70 Hemi Challenger Talladega Pace Car
11 - 70 Plum Cuda 440 Six Pack
12 - Baldwin Motion Corvette
13 - 70 Hemi Coronet RT soft top
14 - #1 Harrell ZL1
15 - 1968 Hurst Olds
These are all top flight cars, many of which were not even being considered for sale. No doubt these would have been an impressive collection to go from ground zero. Some may still be available, some not. A situation as this just makes it bad for the honest serious buyer or seller, it is beyond me why someone would just waste their time and mine playing wanna be car collector.
Thanks,
Motown https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Jeff H 07-28-2004 04:37 PM

Re: Food For Thought....

The biggest waste is that the owners of those cars may be offended by what happened and decide not to sell them now regardless of price. Stupid stunts like that will just damage the collector car market. I just don't get it.

MotownMadman 07-28-2004 05:49 PM

Re: Food For Thought....

Jeff,
You hit the nail on the head exactly. The sellers involved in cars of this caliber are certainly not having financial hardships, so time is spent by the broker presueding the owner to sell, then comes a month of the buyer will be in town on this day or that, the seller is trying to plan his daily life around the supposed arrival, then the end result becomes a month of lies and excuses so that the sellers who didnt need to sell in the first place have been left with such a bad feeling over the whole thing that it becomes unlikely that another opportunity to buy a certain car will be a long time off, if ever, and higher priced as there is no wish to have to go through a month of aggrevation again. The broker ends up with a $1000 phone bill as the wanna be buyer is across the border in another country, as well as the distance locations of the cars for sale, and worse yet through no fault of the broker he ends up looking like the bad guy because he had faith in someone with a convincing story. Therefore, as Rich P. said, along comes a true client and the broker is no longer as courteous as before because another blow to faith in honor has taken it's toll. I have not mentioned this persons name publicaly as that would bring me to his cheesy level, along with legal issues, but anyone who has an interest and wants to be sure they are not being led down the proverbial garden path can contact me by phone or Email for further details. The whole situation has a domino effect that in one way or another hurts all the honorable collectors and enthusiests in this hobby. What goes around comes around.

Is that list exclusively yours or is it like out of Hemmings or something...Do the owners know you are brokering them ?
