Re: Z11 Impala
Is that or was that Don Wattie's car? I was at his place about 8 years ago looking at a 69Z he had for sale and a White Z11 was essentially in his "living room" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif
I remember him saying that he paid about that amount for the air indiction setup. |
Re: Z11 Impala
Hmmmm, now that pictures have been added it is obviously not Don's White car.

They were 427 CID. 4.31" bore x 3.65" stroke. The Strickler Old reliable car was at the York US 30 show. Dig the lightweight aluminum front end.

Re: Z11 Impala
Those are by far the coolest valve covers ever used on a car....and there are slight visual difference in the Z11 as opposed to standard 409 issue. When you open the hood on any 409 car you open up a legend...thanks in part to it's performance and the Beach Boys.

Re: Z11 Impala
Casey: did you and "Randy" finally get together? Was it Cindy's dad you told me was an original Ramcharger? I can't remember, and I guess I deleted that PM...
|
Re: Z11 Impala
I would like to see some photos of this Z11 in race trim from back in the day..
|
Re: Z11 Impala
I sent Randy a copy of the pic, hoping that he would comment on the car, but he hasn't yet.
YES - Cindy's dad was one of the original 13 Ramchargers. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif He attended the Chrysler Institute with Dick Maxwell, Tom Hoover, and all of the other *names* that are associated with the early *after-hours* Chrysler racing program. It's kinda funny, I get the monthly Dodge magazine that they send out to existing customers. In the one a couple of months back, they did a two page spread on the Ramchargers, including pics of THE original Ramcharger - - "The High and Mighty". Amongst the pics in the article, there was a picnic picture that clearly shows Cindy's mom next to some of the other wives, Maxwell, Thornton, etc. Her dad STILL has more vintage Ramchargers pics, and we are slowly but surely getting him to dig them out so that we can make copies. He left Chrysler in 1966 to go work for *cough* Ford *cough* .......... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif Sorry to hijack the thread ..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |
Re: Z11 Impala
Don:
It has been a while, just read your post re my 63-Z-11. Your correct the stories are very similar ie: only shown one year and the air cleaner story. I have had the Z-11 well over 20 years now and still have it. The " Living Room " as you called it, is just a climate controlled Car Room built for the Z-11 and some of my old COPO cars that got a little out of hand and I will admit is probably a little overdone. The local building code regulations forced the issue. Also just read the thread on your L-89, congrats great looking car. Don Wattie |

[ QUOTE ]
Don: It has been a while, Don Wattie [/ QUOTE ] Yes it has Don. I didn't know you were a member on here. You would not believe the blizzard just east of Toronto we drove through on the way home from your place that day, one of the worst I can remember. I knew it wasn't your "living room", just using that as a superlative. I reminisce and talk about that Z-11 sighting every so often as it is the only one I have ever seen in person. Glad to know you are still an active collector. Hope to hook up with you again some day https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Re: Z11 Impala
Hello Don,
I didn't know you were a member here either. It's been a long time since I've seen your white car. Also, as to the aluminum inner fenders (earlier photo in thread) on the Strickler Z-11, they weren't part of the '63 Z-11 package. Those are '62 aluminum inners that Jenkins added to the '63. The "story" goes, they ruined the dies when they did the '62s, so they weren't going to risk another set on the '63s. Verne. |

Re: Z11 Impala
I like the vintage engine stand. Is it a cash box or a tool box?
|
Re: Z11 Impala
FYI.....there's a gentleman in the Midwest that contacted me recently about a white Z11 that changed hands here in Iowa approx. 2 years ago. He indicated he has been working on a book dealing with this model and is trying to trace the history of the remaining known survivors. Perhaps he may visit this board and offer comments. Sounds like a interesting and challenging mission.

Re: Z11 Impala
Hi Dick, that was me that inquired about the car you mention, and the book I'm working on. I was encouraged (you know who you are!) to reply to this thread to possibly promote this project a little, and to add anything constructive or helpful if I can. "Interesting & challenging" are two words that can only begin to describe this journey so far, thats for sure. If anyone that reads this is has any information, or better yet, photographs, don't hesitate to drop me a line, or send me a pm and I'll give you my home phone #.
BTW Dick, I'm off to IA on Saturday to follow up on an Iowa car. Also, I was looking through the "Other Dealers" section on this site, it was tantalizing to see the number of dealers listed that had a Z-11 sold through them. Mark |

Welcome Mark, bout time you chime in. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Hope all is well. I thought about you when this thread started and assumed you were somewhere in the shadows. Hope the venture is coming along well.

Re: Z11 Impala
Hi Rick! Yes, all is well. A major home remodel has diverted my attention most of the summer, well I guess a good chunk of the year as it turns out, but its moving ahead, picking up speed lately. Lets chat soon!

Re: Z11 Impala
Hi guys. I'm a total noob on this board (First post, go me) and I'd like to start by saying I found this place today, and LOVE it. I was actually looking for pics to post to one of the Volkswagen forum's I belong to, as we were talking about american muscle.
I have some video that may be of some interest to the guy writing the book. The video is basically Indy, Detroit, Muncie, Kil-kare and a couple other tracks in the 60's. Most of the video is Stock Eliminator, and includes the ram chargers, Nicholson and his team mate (can't remember the name) along with Gas Rhonda, Stone, Woods and Cook, and Ohio George. The video is poor quality, as it has the staticy junk along the bottom, and the only audio is a guy telling which cars are which. I forget who made the video, but it was one of the old drag racing guys here in Dayton. I believe Nicholson's 63 was a Z11, was it not? I'm 'just a pup', being a 1981 model, so I can't remember ANY of this stuff, as it was 20 years before I was even born, but Vintage Dragracing is something I enjoy reading, watching, and look at pics of. On a side note. I believe my old 63 Impala (I traded a 65 VW bug for it, then traded it back for a 65 and a 66 bug) had a Z11 hood. It was all aluminum, but had a ABS plastic hood scoop grafted on w/ fiberglass. I sold the hood at a swap meet in 2001, for $200 and bought a steel hood without the crazy scoop. I've tried to find the guy who bought the hood, but can't. IIRC he lives in Coshocton, Ohio. (I live near Dayton, Ohio.) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif As far as the video goes, I have no way to make a copy, but maybe I can find a way, I will check around this week, as I would LOVE to help out. Re: Z11 Impala ZO-6 CORVETTE BRAKES!! ?
1 Attachment(s)
I know this car well from the McGrouter Collection in Phoenix, AZ before the current owner purchased. Doug Hughes from Phoenix did much of the restoration.
The 427 engine was the prototype 'porcupine'head unit and was quite different from a 409.The production heads patterened after this design first appeared in 65 on the new 396 Corvette. Also, take a look at the rare 63 ZO-6 heavy duty Corvette brakes on this Impala. Screened backing plates, cere-metallic linings, 15 inch wheels.....Pretty rare stuff. Only 199 ZO-6 Corvettes were made in 63 with this brake option. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif |
Re: Z11 Impala ZO-6 CORVETTE BRAKES!! ?
Jim,
I may be wrong, but I think you have the Z-11 engine confused with the 427 Mystery Engine. The Z-11 carries the same block casting number as all the other 409 passenger production blocks in '63, but it's stroked. The heads retain exactly the same valve arrangement as the 409; they're just taller, with raised ports. (That's not to say they're common) Verne |
