I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
1 Attachment(s)
I found this one in a barn in Ben Lomond CA. Its a mountain town above Santa Cruz. The car has been sitting over 20 years. It is a 396/360 hp, 4 speed, 3.73 non-posi. Originally Marina Blue with Bright blue bench interior. 66K original miles. Has anyone ever seen this air cleaner decal before. I thought it was aftermarket at first, but the lis had the silkscreen under it and I see no evidence of former decals. Someone put some buckets in the car early on, they look to be European? If anyone knows what they go to originally I would like to know. Here's a few pics of the car.

Cool car.. Can we get a closeup the the decal ?

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
The air cleaner decal is an aftermarket, but era-correct item. You could buy these from speed shops and through parts catalogs with various engine IDs and HP ratings. I think these decals were discussed here awhile back.

It's been a long time for me, but I didn't have that sticker on my 396/360 Chevelle---I do remember similar aftermarket decals https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif----Great find Congradulations https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif--Joe beat me to it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
What's the redline on the tach? |
Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
That is what I figured in the decal, but why take off the original and replace it with that one? Kinda strange. Its a 7000 RPM tach that redlines at 5500. Now for the seats. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
JOE,I KNOW YOU KNOW YOUR CARS,BUT I DISSAGREE WITH YOUR POST ON THE AFTERMARKET DECAL. I DONT KNOW THE WHOLE DEAL ON THAT DECAL BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS MY FRIEND JIM BOUGHT A NEW 69 L78 CAR AND STILL HAS IT,AND IT HAS THAT DECAL ON IT AND HE TOLD ME IT WAS THE ONE ON THERE WHEN HE GOT THE CAR!! AND I HAVE A 68 AIR CLEANER OFF A LOW MILEAGE SURVIVOR CAR THAT HAS THE DECAL ON IT TOO!! BUT MINE SAYS 325-HP! AND THERES NO EVIDENCE THERE WAS EVER CROSS FLAGS ON IT. I WISH WE COULD GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS. I THOUGHT IT HAD TO DO WITH WHERE IT WAS BUILT AT. RESPECTFULLY YOURS DON. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
So you're saying this decal was factory applied not only in 66, but also in 68 AND 69? I'll have to say i think thats false, but would appriciate anyone elses thoughts.

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
One thought I have may be that sometimes cars were delivered to the dealerships without any engine size/HP decals on the air cleaner lids... as witnessed by many original cars, including the blue Yenko I recently posted pics of. I have a vintage mailout sent out by Chevrolet to their dealers, addressing the issue of dealers requesting replacement decals for cars during reconditioning, etc. and Chevrolet provides a brochure for an outside vendor who specializes in these "reproduction" factory-style decals. My thoughts are, perhaps dealerships used these aftermarket sources to add decals to cars that may have come in without any, in order to "dress-up" the engine and help the unknowledgeable salesmen and customers know what they were looking at when they raised the hoods... just a thought, as i still do not believe the decal in question was ever produced or installed by Chevrolet, but was indeed made during the same timeframe when these cars were new. I will attempt to post pics of the letter from Chevrolet, and the catalog... while the decal we are talking about is not shown, it proves there were outside sources for original style decals, even back then. A neat piece of memorabilia too! (click the link below)

Here is the front of the brochure from the outside vendor that reproduced decals and was endorsed by Chevrolet in the above letter to the dealership.

here's another page of the same brochure. I would bet those rectangular decals came from this place or one like it.

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
Saw that same style sticker at a cruise nite last month. The guy had a BB Nova with an aftermarket air cleaner and that sticker. It read 396/325 hp. I questioned him and he said he borrowed it from his brother's Chevelle. Didn't think much about it at the time, but now it fits. If I see it again I'll get some photos. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
Did '66 360-horse Chevelles come with the open element AC air cleaner or did they have the large diameter/air horn style? Maybe the previous owner bought the chrome AC at the parts counter and it came with that sticker.
That smog equipment must be pretty valuable. Keep the black plates if they're not too far gone. CA DMV might take them away if you walk in there with them in-hand. Ask around about keeping the black plates on the car before going to DMV. Black plates seem to be the hot item for the California guys. Nice car with LOTS of potential. GOOD LUCK! |

The plates are sweet and keeping them has never been a problem for me.

Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
very nice.... My 2 cents here. Have been researching and documenting 66 and 67 Chevelles for over 15 yrs. fairly intensive. Have seen that sticker before, but have concluded that it was/is an aftermarket sticker. Never came from the Factory with that sticker on the air cleaner. I have looked at many orig. unrestored 66 and 67 SS chevelles and have never seen one that had this sticker on it from the factory. Does not mean I am absolutely 100% correct, just what my conclusion is on this subject from my own research. The air cleaner is original, no doubt there.. but the sticker is not IMO.
Seats.. maybe CORVAIR?? You are right, hard to read that Engine deck stamp.. can you tell me what it reads? and can I see pics of the trunk and tail panel please., and more engine shots... That car was built VERY close to the same time as mine at the Fremont plant.. only a few numbers off.. mine is 12D also, and is a 360HP. Thank you Mike Crown |
Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
? for Mystery
did the 66 have options listed on the trim tag like the 67's? This one doesnt and I was just wondering |
Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
I have a Friend who has a strip of those odd 396/325HP Cross flag Air cleaner decals. They are still sealed in a protective wrapper, and he still has the receipt. He bought them from an Auto parts store some 30 years ago he tells me.
He also picked up some other odd decals with them. They say,"I'd rather FIGHT,Then Switch!",with the Chevrolet bowtie in the center. These are aftermarket.and were aimed at a cigarette brand asking others to switch brands in the mid 60's..Tareyton I think? |
Re: I know you guys like barn finds, so.....
That's Mike https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif
BF ( Fremont Tags ) did not "generally" list many OPTIONS on them.. 66 or 67... but that doesn't mean none were listed, just rare to see much if any.. Baltimore was also notorious for listing very little to none on their tags. Atlanta listed many, as did other plants. This tag is very typical Fremont 66 Tag showing color option and seat type and color. |

Uh-oh, now it looks as if this style of sticker might become valuable. I can see the eBay auction now:
"Rare Baldwin Motion Yenko Nickey Dana Berger COPO sticker" Bidding will start at $20 and go from there! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
