Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Tom,
Interesting! The 1967 Yenko Camaro has the L-72 with 450HP, similar to my Corvette (I would assume). I know during sept, oct, and early nov you could get the 450HP L-72 in the Vette. After that, it was down sized to 425HP. What years did Yenko use the 450 HP L-72? What years did Yenko switch? Thanks -Dan |
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Very interesting that Clark Maple Chevrolet in Chicago is listed as a Yenko Dealer. Tom if they are listed as a dealer in the network did they for sure sell a car?

I love that ad! I could throw a set of mid-year Corvette sidepipes on my car and pretend it's a Yenko*. (See pic)
I think the '66 Corvette L-72's original 450hp rating was changed to 425 (different sticker on air filter lid) by GM to help calm the insurance companies. I don't think there was any change to the engines. The motors used by "Supercar" conversion dealers were basically crate L-72 Corvette engines if I'm not mistaken. Yenko probably used the "450" rating to attract buyers. (*And I'd catch he__ for it too!) |
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
alot of advertising for the stormers. yenko only had 3 z28s in 67 and there was a limit of 5 per dealer when they first came out I learned...so how did he obtain more z28s to turn into stormers or did he just change out the cranks on L30/M20s??
|
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Have any stormers been found? I would love to read a feature on one.

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Tom,
Thanks for sharing this early information. Interesting that Royal Plum was one of the colors, any found of this color? That is the original color of "Little Hoss". Another interesting note, is that Mills Chevrolet of Moline, Ill. one of the listed early dealers, is the same dealer my other 1967 Z28 came from. It was raced at Cordova, just a few miles north of Moline, which is about 100 miles north of LaHarpe. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif |
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Another early dealer was Shalla Chevrolet, of Detroit Michigan. An August of 1967 CarCraft "Straight Scoop" notice about Dick joining forces with Don Yenko mentions that Shalla received one of the first Yenko conversions.

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
ken I just pm'd you.. I just spoke w/ a man who worked at shalla , he said not only did they sponsor the 67 L88 harrell/yenko car, but later bought it from dick in 68, his job was to take it to shows and later he bought it in 69 I believe w/o logos, it said shalla on side, and killer on lid, car was red L88 w/ dual carters on weiand intake, m22, and 4.88s in a frontload pontiac rear!!
|
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
correction, yenko owned and campaigned the car in 67, sold it to shalla in 68 where this employee "used" it when he got the chance, it was run by the owner of shalla w/ their logos at local tracks and sold used in 69 w/o logos, shalla only sold yenkos in 67, no idea where the car went after that... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Ken, I knew Mills was a Yenko dealer, but have never been able to verify that one went through the dealership. I did hear a rumor that the one they supposedly had wound up at Fred's dealership. All rumors from old memories.
Yes your white Z ran at Cordova. I seem to remember that it had an L88 in it at one time. I worked with the owner for years. A very unique individual to say the least. Schonye |
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Fred did sell a 67 Yenko a red one. I use to watch it drive around Burlington on the street. It said THE MAD MONK in gold leave on the doors. Kim https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
what was don thinking applying to nhra as the manufacturer of the super camaro w/ designed and engineered by dick harrell all over his advertisements and fob out of st.louis where dick's shop was at that time, no wonder why they didn't let it fly, how would a tech inspection work back then if nhra allowed them to bring some for inspection before final denial? What class was he applying for modified or super stock??
|
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
Not sure I'm following you...? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Where was NHRA mentioned??
|
Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro

Here is a bit of trivia for you guys. Does anyone know who actually drove the Red 1967 Killer L88 Camaro for Shalla Chevrolet?? Great board guys, I'm just finding about about this! I've been posting at Camaros.net for about a year now. Joe |

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro
I was told the 67 Yenko/Harrell Camaro may have come from Nickey or Bill Thomas and Harrell had it before he made is deal with Yenko.

I have a bunch of what it looked like when we 'found' it at the Detroit Autorama back in the late 80's but I haven't posted them. I don't have any images of the 'Killer' Camaro |

Re: 1967 Yenko Camaro spec sheet
Regarding the hydraulic-cammed 410-horse/Th-400 version:
Was it a 390-horse oval-port engine that was modified to obtain the 410-horse rating? Did Yenko modify the trans/converter? Do any of the 410-horse cars survive? |
