Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

I think there are 2 different steering wheels for the 68 Chevelles. Check the auction link below and see if that is the one you need. That auction has ended already. That steering wheel was used on some 68 Chevelles, Novas, Camaros and Impalas. 68 is the only year it was used. I have been looking for one for my car for several months. An uncracked one will be very hard to find. I just bought a cheap one that I am going to have restored.

That's the deluxe wheel for 68.....came on everthing as an option or with an interior package.Very cool wheel and super tough to find...I have a NOS one for my car and still put on a NOS wood wheel cause there easier to find if/when it cracks.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Tom the one I have has SS 396 in the center...not sure if this was Camaro or what..

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Based on the pics of the 68 Chevelle SS396 supercarkid just posted, my guess is your wheel is from a Camaro, the chevelle has just an "SS" emblem... although the SS396 emblem could have been a midyear change? I have one of these 68 wheels with a SS427 emblem from an Impala.. pretty cool. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Tom, If you have one of these steering wheels that you want to replace, you may want to consider having it restored. There is a place about 50 miles from me that specializes in restoring old steering wheels. It is going to cost me $250 to $300 to have mine done. They say it takes about 3 weeks to complete. The name of the place is Automotive Specialities. They are located in Easley, South Carolina. Phone # is 1-800-676-1928. I think they have an ad in Hemmings.

There is a 1968 SS 396 Chevelle over here with SS396 on it's steering wheel shroud. It is a December,Baltimore built car.It looks Original to the car,as he has owned it since 1979 with that emblem.

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Tom, Gateway Reproductions had one A while back that had been off A car and on the wall for most of its existence. I spoke with Jim when I dealt with them, they did A great job with the things I needed. Gateway is in Winfield, MO (636)566-6666. Those wheels are 68 only wheels having the small ridges from the center down and the "SS396" emblem was for the Chevelle and the ChevyII and Camaro only had "SS" from what I have seen and read. The Sun really reaked havoc on them, I found A "yard" last summer with six Chevelles in A row and all the Steering wheels were cracked beyond repair.

Belair, I do not know what the SS 396 wheel emblem is for, but it is not for the Camaro. Joe and Belair, here is a pic of my unrestored survivor SS 396 Camaro wheel. It only has the SS emblem in the center.

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

I failed to proof read my last post and it reads incorrectly because of my poor use of punctuation... The 68 Chevelles used the SS396 emblem. The 68 ChevyII and camaro used the SS only emblem. My wheel is identical to yours Bill, only not in such good shape.

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

My 68 Chevelle has the SS only, and I'm 99.9% sure it is original. The wheel is junk, but the shroud is nice. It's a plain jane, no frills, bench seat 4 speed car if that matters...Don't remember the build date off hand, and I'm at work so I can't go look.

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

I think the SS396 vs SS emblem is more of a production timeframe thing than a model thing. I don't think it matters if its a Camaro, Chevelle or Nova as much as WHEN the particular car was built. My guess is that early cars had the SS396 emblem, and was later changed to the SS emblem so ALL models could use the same one, including SS 350 cars.

Supercar_Kid 05-03-2004 11:18 PM

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

LV's Harrell Chevelle has the plain SS emblem and I think it's a safe bet to say it hasn't been touched, and the rust bucket '68 I posted pics of had the plain SS as well, and I can say for sure it's hasn't be touched. Both cars shared the rare UAW strike interior so I'd bet that the build dates of these two cars are within a week or two of one another. LV...what's the build date on your Chevelle? Let's look at known unrestored cars both before and after these dates, then maybe we'll come up with a time frame for the switch. I agree you'll probably find all later cars having SS only, as it makes more sense to switch to a generic "SS" for all Super Sport models than to have two separate parts for such a trivial application. Wonder if late production SS427 Impalas got the SS427 horn shroud emblem, or if that was done away with too and replaced with SS only? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

camarojoe 05-03-2004 11:48 PM

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Did they produce an "SS350" emblem for the 68 steering wheel? I have seen SS, SS396, and SS427, but can't recall for sure if I've ever seen SS350.

SS427 05-04-2004 12:01 AM

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Kevin,
All original '68 SS427 Impalas that I have documented had the SS427 horn button unless they had the wood wheel. I have never seen an original Z24 car with the "SS" wheel. The only change I have seen has been with the side marker lights.

jfkheat 05-04-2004 01:10 AM

Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

Could it have something to do with what interior package the car got? Maybe bench seat cars got the SS one and bucket seat cars got the SS396 one. The one on my car is not like any of the ones mentioned here. It has the Canadian maple leaves on it. Try finding another one of these!!!

[/ QUOTE ]mr70, I'm not sure what you mean by the above comment, but judging from my past experiences with you on this board, I took it as another personal bashing comment directed towards me. You don't know me well enough to make comments like this. Rick N made an honest mistake and you ran with it. Again mr70 you choose to put your foot in your mouth by adding comments that have nothing to do with the original poster's wanting a 68 SS steerig wheel. Rairly do I comment on anything unless I have something positive to add to the topic. You on the other hand, have too much to say quite too often. Please know that I have been around here a long time and read this forum daily even though I don't post every day. I suggest you keep your stupid comments to yourself in the future, as I had nothing to do with this thread till now!!!! Re: 68 Chevelle/Nova Steering Wheel

I tend to agree. The 396 was launched late in the 68 Chevy II model year. As a result the "SS" could have been the standard. Did it make sense to change to the "SS396" for so few cars late in the model year?

I will research it. If anyone has part numbers for the emblems, post them, I can check usage and parts history to see what they were intended for in the parts books.
