427 Block Numbers
Hi,
I just bought what is supposed to be a 427. The casting number looks like 3963854, which I cannot find at mortech, although there is a 3969854, which is a 396. The deck has TO317CKN stamped on it??????? Any ideas? Is this a 396 or 427? Thanks for the input. Rich |
Re: 427 Block Numbers
CKN: 396ci, at, hp
Note: Actual displacement of L-34 and L-78 "396" V-8's is 402 cid 1970 CKN Chevelle 402 330 400 LS-3 http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro70.html#engine --------------- 3969854....402.......70-72...2 or 4 bolt www.mortec.com I would bet its the 9854 block |
Re: 427 Block Numbers
It's neither.It's a 1970 402 CID 3969854 block.
CKN was coded for a 1970 330 HP TH400 Chevelle & Monte Carlo.It was RPO LS3,& is a two bolt application. |
Re: 427 Block Numbers
Yeaaaaa, exactly what I was afraid of. Grasping as straws hoping that the pad data would show otherwise!!!
Looks like I have a phone call to make. Rich |

Re: 427 Block Numbers
Anyone know this machine shop? The work order says 427, but I don't know if they just took the owners work for it, or know something I don;t.

Re: 427 Block Numbers
RIch,
My phone book shows a Bud's Machine and Engine Shop in Lakewood, WA which is down by Tacoma. It's not a shop I have heard of though. 12019 Pacific Highway South, phone number is 253-588-2837. And they have a web site http://www.budsmachine.com/ No luck finding a number for Brett Young though. -Sam |
Re: 427 Block Numbers
Bought a 396 once that the guy said was a 427. Measured it and it was. Had been bored big time.
Junked it as it lacked "structual integrity " Good luck. |

Re: 427 Block Numbers
Thanks HC.
I tried both of those with no luck, but will keep trying. Thanks for the Buds info, I will call them today and ask about the work order number, etc. Rich |
Re: 427 Block Numbers
That trick only worked with some 1965 and 66 blocks since there was one casting that was actually machined as both a 427 or a 396.The casting was the same, and in fact I know of a racer who ran 2 different ones at the 427 bore plus .090",which means that the 396 block was actually as thick as a 427 thick wall block.Later 402 blocks awere way thinner.I would say that at best a 4.185" bore might be max.A good 402 isnt the end of the world, anyway. At .030" over a 408 with oval ports will make enuff tire shredding torque to pass itself off as any 427 or 454 on a restored street car.

Re: An Update
Well, it is great when you find things out!!! Seems like the guy that sold me the 427 and sent a 70 402 was arrested recently by the Bellingham (WA) police department. It seems that he has a history of doing this. The last time (before me) he tangled with a senator from Michigan, and was arrested for it. He is a 24 year old college student.
It seems that his dad is a lawyer, who reportedly sued the police department after the arrest. Boy were they glad to hear from me! He aviods neg feedback by cancelling auctions early on those he is going to screw, comes up with a lame excuse, and then offers to sell you the engine anyway. Once you get screwed, you cannot leave him negative feedback. He maintains 100% positive feedback by selling a good engine cheap every once in a while. Now that I found him out, he wants to "work something out", but has used all the money I sent him. I gave him 24 hrs. I am going to post how the scam works under the main discussion so no one else gets screwed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
