BE axle Posi unit...

Is there a correct part number for the posi unit on BE axles? I have read somewhere that the unit was machined different, different guts, and such...What posi unit is correct for a BE... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

The BE rear end had special part numbers for the ring and pinion set, but they all used an Eaton 4 Series Posi carrier. The part number cast into the end of the unit is EDB 30174.

The guts were completely different. The side gears were unique and the spider gears were bigger in size like the non posi spider gears. I had one rebuilt years ago and the rearend guy said in the 20 plus years he had been doing them he had only seen one other. Somewhere I have pics of the gears.

Re: BE axle Posi unit...

The posi carrier in a "BE" rear is actually a #234 and is different then the standard #174 4-series carrier.

Re: BE axle Posi unit...

Not that I'm any great expert, but I was quoting Ed Cunneen's book, page 85, where he states "This 4.10 positraction axle consisted of a special service Eaton positraction case (ED8-30174)including heavy duty springs, spider gears and plates..."
If GM used other carriers, where would I find the information?

To answer your question.Pick up a copy of "Chevrolet Special Equipment" catalog.
This is filed with Hi-po parts Chevrolet sold then & now over the counter.I have one here dated 3-9-72.It shows a 4:10 Posi Ring & Pinion Part#3917971 for all Chevy cars.
Carrier#3918837 replaced #3916234.

The Spring plates and springs were also COPO specific and different than a standerd 4 series. Just like Clill said. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...arleySucks.gif

Is it to be known that anybody remakes these gears or are available new? Or even Old Stock, new? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Here is a pic I took of a pic that I took years ago. The gears on the left are non posi, center are BE and right are standard posi. Notice the spiders are the same size for the non posi and the BE but they are bigger than the posi.

I guess I'm confused. Colvin's book says that a posi with gearing of 3.90:1 and up was an Eaton 4-series, with no mention of anything special for COPO's (p.303). This was the casting that I attached before. Cunneen makes no mention of the carrier guts being special. Attached is a photo of the inside of my carrier. It came out of my BE rear end. It is quite possable that it was swaped out sometime in the past, but I have no history of the car prior to 1989.
Thanks for your help, as I am now as curious as Mark.

Yes,it is date coded (101)st day. Yes, the Small spiders are still available from GM over the counter. The larger axle spiders are not avaialble nor are the springs or spring plates.

Re: BE axle Posi unit...

Where is the date code located? Also, could you tell from the pictures that I attached if this was the original carrier? Thanks for your help.

Where did the first day start in the Calendar year; for example: Sept, Aug, July-68? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

This might help:

1968, 1969, and 1970 Julian Dates

101st day 1968 = Wednesday April 10, 1968
