Don and daughter Lynn along side a 1983 IMSA Camaro, raced by Don Yenko, Jerry and Chris Thompson. This car would turn out to be the last car raced by Don, as he and Jerry Thompson were almsot finished with a car to replace this one, a 1987 Camaro, when Don lost his life.

I especially like that second generation action shot. What year & where was that taken? |
Re: Don and a few of his race cars
Just eyeing the Camaro would have to be 1974-1977.

This car would turn out to be the last car raced by Don [/ QUOTE ] not sure about that Don was racing a Honda in the 1980s. Took a lot of joking from his Corvette SCCA friends about it. |
Re: Don and a few of his race cars
Maybe the last car he raced that mattered...BKH

Re: Don and a few of his race cars
I know that Kim Mason was racing a IMSA Monza, but not sure of the year..BKH

Re: Don and a few of his race cars
Just quoting Jerry Thompson, who raced with and for Don from the mid '60s until Don's death in '87.
|
Re: Don and a few of his race cars
There was a magazine article, where Jerry and Don co drove the 83 Camaro and won 3rd place at Lime Rock. Before the race, Jerry’s sponsor IRC had told him that Don looked too old to be a fast driver. After the race, they said Don didn’t look so old standing on the podium. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif
There was also a picture of Don in driving suit and helmet with his head sticking up through the roof driving a Camaro go-cart painted just like the IRC Camaro. |

[/ QUOTE ] Looks like Mid Ohio. The photo of him at the rear of his car on jack stands is definitely Sebring,I would say march of 69 at the twelve hour.He seems to be looking at his watch, calculating how much time he will be in the pits with a rear end problem(note the 68 spoiler) |
Re: Don and a few of his race cars
The white 69 Camaro picture is Sebring 1970. Yenko/Grossman ZL1 427 Camaro ran in GT class with the Corvettes. They ran a red ZL1 engine 69 Camaro in 1969.

Here's one from a little earlier in his career. Been meaning to post this one for while. The Corvette Hall of Fame induction was good prompting.

Re: Don and a few of his race cars
That 'Vette is SWEET! What's the scoop on it? L72, L88, ??
|
Re: Don and a few of his race cars
I believe that the car was originally campaigned as an L-88, then changed to a ZL-1 motor in the early 70s. It's currently got a modern ZL-1 casting and the modern 074/077 replacement heads. They had serious overheating problems with the car at Goodwood and weren't particularly interested in answering questions. Too bad...

Proves that even the media from the same era can make mistakes... Car is supposed to be driven by Yenko, but they made several mistakes in the 1966 Sebring progam.
Check this out: Mistake #1: Picture is supposed to be from the 1965 race. In 1965, Yenko indeed drove a 'Vette with Bushell, but it was #28 - they DNF'd. Mistake #2: There was no 'Vette #6 in the 1965 race (#6 was a Porsche 904 GTS). The picture is actually from the 1964 race, but was driven by Robertson/Boo - it retired due to clutch problems despite the issue they appear to be having in the picture. 1964 was the year Don drove the Ferrari GTO to 28th overall and 3rd in Class. How the hell are we supposed to use these old mags as reference material? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif 1966 was a better year for Don. He drove a 427 Vette to 11th overall and 2nd in Class. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/116583-65-Corvette.jpg |

Last one for now. 1964 American Road Race of Champions, Riverside, CA (effectively the national run-offs). Yenko was one of two representatives of the Northeast Region:

Re: Don and a few of his race cars
Looking back at the '68 Camaro, which is white, is this a former Smokey Yunick car? I had heard from a reliable source this may be so.
