MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I've always wondered what happened to this sign?
I am referring to the one that 427TJ shows in his 2nd post in his Old Photos topic. It's above the car bays.
Has anyone seen it lately,or know it's where abouts today?Does Joel R. still have it?
I think it would be a great piece of memorabilia to own today.
Please dont tell me it was destroyed??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Rick,
question on your question:
Was that the last sign that was still on the building after it was shut down and converted to an automatic transmission shop, or was there another sign on the building at the "end", perhaps a black and white one on the roof?
Verne.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Good Question Verne.
I don't now,I just see this in the old pix from time to time, and thought someone could shed some light about.
I would hope somone was able to obtain it before the business changed over.
Maybe JoeC knows?

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

This was the last sign on the building when Motion closed it's doors in the 90's. My computer is still throwing fits, using a friends computer to stop by and say hello. JoeG https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Sometimes when a sign is changed the old one is put up on the roof (flat, tar and gravel roofed buildings) instead of being disposed of. Is the Motion building still there? You never know...

Verne_Frantz 02-24-2004 12:05 AM

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Yes, the building is still there. (At least it was last summer when I drove by). I do believe there was another sign. I'm just hoping someone can come up with a photo showing it on the building. I would think some old magazine features (or Motion ads) would reveal it.

Verne.

On my friends computer again---I'll be out that way this week ---I'll try to swing by and take a look--It will nice to see the place again ---JoeG

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

That sign I believe is gone, I live right near there and tried to get it when Motion moved out. There is a custom wheel/accessory place and a tranny shop there now. You don't think Joel would just leave that sign laying around do you...

JoeG 02-28-2004 06:12 PM

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Took care of business today and swung by the old Motion building ,unfortunately your right Sully ---ELVIS and MOTION PERFORMANCE have both left the building.--JoeG

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I couldn't open your link, but my recollection is of a sign (not like the one at the beginning of this thread) that was about 12' long, 2' high, and about a foot thick, yellow letters on a blue(?) background, internally lighted, which simply said "MOTION".
I can't believe someone on this site can't come up with a photo of that sign. ??????

Verne.

Is this the version of the Motion shop sign you're talking about?

L-R: Jack Geiselman, John Mahler, Joel Rosen. From the 6/67 Cars Magazine article on the first Motion-converted '67 Camaro "Supercar."

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

My recollection of the (a) sign is the following; 2'x12' internally light Yellow background with "Motion" in Black letters,it also had a black, curved arrow at the end of "Motion" that showed the shop was right around the corner of the bldg. This is the sign that was mounted on the top of the west side wall facing west. I remember it distinctly. SULLY

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

427,
That is definitely a different sign than the one we've been looking at, but the sign I was referring to is exactly the one JR referred to. About a foot thick (not a "placard" type sign on the front of the building) and internally lit.
I guess no one ever photographed that one.
Verne.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

One of the guys who lives near the old Motion shop needs to go by and take a current photo of the site and post it here.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I may be able to arrange that if no one else makes it before this weekend. I have a friend who usually goes to the "Island" every weekend to visit his kids, and it's a short detour for him to go by and take a few digital shots. I'll ask him if he's willing.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I did take pictures, unfortunately the computer I'm on doesn't have a scanner--If your friend dosen't get a chance to take any photos , I will post the photos I took when I pick up my computer this week---Gary Kupfer( The Localbrush) was nice enough to send me this info on the Motion building and signs---"As far as the questions about the color of the Motion building and the color of the lettering-- First of all it was painted white in the real early days, with an electric sign that had very basic block black letters on a white background. Later the building was painted the Motion colors- yellow with a new electric sign that had bouncing blue lettering and a yellow background. The sign did not last long so I had to paint it on the wall. As I recall the building was painted electric blue and eventually yellow again"--Gary. Hope this helps--JoeG

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Cool stuff Joe!
Nothing like getting it from someone who was "there".
I'll wait till Fri. and if a pic of the place "as is" today doesn't show up, I'll ask my buddy to stop by.

I wonder how long that blue and yellow lit sign was up. I swear, I remember that sign. (had my colors backwards though)

Verne.

I'm going to take the drive out to Long Island this weekend is Baldwin Chevy still standing along with the Motion building..i'm sure all the colors are different but the shape of the building must be the same that will give me a good idea of the building but those colors !! I want to do the building as it was in 1969 so i'm guesing the photos put up were from that year going by the cars in the shot.
I also want to do a picture of Baldwin as it was in 69 so any help is greatly appreciated

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I have some pics that were taken last summer! They show the building very well and will be a big help to you. I'm (with the help of a guy from canada) doing a 1/18 scale diorama of the old building using the same sign design and had Fred Greco take these pics to help me out. I can email the pics to you as I can't get them to post here.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Thanks Joe,
Little pieces of the puzzle keep surfacing. Amazing how you managed to find that old photo with the Camaro. Doesn't even look like a normal sized magazine format.

The guy that I bought my latest '62 from did some business with Motion, but mostly in the mid 70s with his Import Car part of the business. He saved a catalog of Motion import parts. His sister had an Opel GT that he got "creative" with. Since Joel branched out his business into those areas, is it possible he had some business tie with the BMW establishment next door?

Sully,
Could that BMW building have been the West side you spoke of where the lighted sign with the curved black arrow was hung? That building would have blocked the side of the garages if coming from the West.
Was that the sign you tried to get when the new business moved in, or was it the long one on the front that you were speaking of?
Sorry, too many questions huh? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Verne.

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

The one I remember was on the pink side of the BMW section the words MOTION in black with the curved black arrow showing to go around the side of the building----maybe this is the one JRSULLY is referring to??---Joe

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

Joe and Verne, that is the sign I was referring to, it was definitely yellow, said Motion (black letters) and had the Black arrow pointing down and around the corner. It was on the top, north corner of the west side building (part of the complex that juts out) Did Joel say that sign was gone.?? SULLY

Re: MOTION PERFORMANCE SIGN

I had thought about going and inquiring about that sign right after Joel left and the Wheel guys moved in. The Motion sign was hanging on the wall a while before it was removed, Oh well!!
