66 Olds 442 Rescue

I got talked into Rescuing a 66 442... It is a Funky car from front to back. Has what appears to be Dayton Wire wheel real Knock offs. CD Player in dash with a Black Sabbath CD still in it. Chrome Skull looking at you from in the dash where the clock used to be. Chrome Skull shift knob that has red eyes that light up. Two Speaker boxes in the back seat with neon light that light to the music beat. Bigger speaker in the trunk with a amp. Dents everywhere but not rusty. Fairly new Edelbrock Performer intake and Carb. Appears to be a Factory 4 speed car with console mounted vacumn guage and tach on end of dash. Front seats are later buckets. Also has new ball joints and polyurethane sway bar bushings installed. It is so ugly that my Son wouldn't drive it home when I bought it. Seems to run fine but the brakes are weird. I have no idea if it is the orig engine. Does anybody wanna pay me 3800.00 for it ? I'm told that 4 speed models are kinda rare. And I have to keep the skull shify knob. Belair..This Beauty has your name all over it.

Charley,
Do you think it would make the drive cross country to Michigan?

I would feel better if it was shipped.

Half the fun is the sense of adventure. Has it been off the road awhile or has it been a driver? Did you notice anything major needed in the way of repairs? If it steers and stops OK, doesnt smoke bad, temp runs normal, and tires are decent I might not be afraid to give it a whirl. Looks like a perfect project for my teenage sons first car. Get back to me on these questions and I will have a chat with the wife. (Or should I say Boss!)

Charlie, what heads are on it? It'll have a 3/4" tall letter in the bottom left corner of each head. Also what is the block #? located on the flat surface between water pump and intake? If its a big block it'll have a letter designation, if it's a small block it'll have a number. Heads too. I see it's got the crossover manifolds on it. Not the true duel exhaust manifolds. Doesn't look like the original engine. What trans does it have in it? Looks like a GTO Hurst shifter too. Thats not a 442 piece.

head has a 8 and a X. Block is 395558 and a large 2.. Intake is a performer Olds 350. Fuel line is cracking, no fan shroud, brake booster hose is plugged.

Looks like you have a '73-'74 350 in that. 8's are smog heads. Poor performers.

Hey, I kinda like it, ditch the rims, keep the tires, add a nice new red or black paint, get the interior factory fresh, fix the problems previously listed, and you have a respectable cruiser.

I use to race those Oldsmobiles, if you had a w-30 you had a real screamer! Not many cars could beat them on the street!

Re: 66 Olds 442 Rescue

I remember in Musclecar Review or another magazine a few years ago about a 442 about this year that was setup for the PureStock drags. I think it had a tri-power on it. A really nice car. I grew-up with a friend of mine that had a 1969 442 with a 400 c.i. and we kicked alot of butt on the streets.

I had an new 1968 W-30, M-22 trans, transiterized ignition, 4:33 gears. Neat car with those scoops under the front bumper!

Re: 66 Olds 442 Rescue

Heck,
I was seriously considering a power tour X country. Does whoever bought it need a correct set of front seats or an excellent running 67 Big Block engine from a Toronado?
