Re: Royal and Motion
Marty Schorr joked about that car saying that Joel got him in trouble with Pontiac. Car was on loan from Pontiac and had been tuned by Royal. Marty brought it to Motion and Joel didn't like the tune up so re did it. Marty won some races with it and it was in some magazines with the Motion name on the car. I guess Pontiac and Royal were not too happy about that. I can't read the plate. Does it have a Mich. Manufacturer plate on it in the photos?

Re: Royal and Motion
You don't see many color pictures like that
Motion had some products that he called "Top Cat". Royal had the "Bob Cat" I wonder if there was a relation? |
Re: Royal and Motion
That shot of the rear with the "GM" tag is certainly Atco, NJ. It still hasn't changed much and pretty much looks the same.

The test
Running in A/Stock Formula 2 (N. Y. National Speedway classifica- tion), our GTO was badly outclassed by such formidable competitors as 375-hp 396-cube Camaros and 375-hp Z-16 Chevelles. With friend Joel Kimmelman handling track relations ( since promoted from friend to pit crew chief), Joel Rosen twisting the wrencheS and yours truly doing the driving, the car did amazingly weIl on its first out- ing. Royal's driving instructions were to idle off the line at 1100-1200 rpm because of the 1500-rpm stall speed converter and punch it,shifting out be- fore the hood-mounted tach reached the 5000-rpm marker . Temperatures at the track ran in the 60's and the Goodyears pumped to approximately 30 psi did a respectable job. The first two runs of the day were made per Royal instructions and the time slips read 14.19-no mph, 13.87- 94, and 13.60-107 respectively. AlI shifts were thrown at 5400 rpm which seemed to be a little too much, as valves started floating at about that point. Two more runs were made with everything left as is, except that the engine was torque-loaded on the line at 1400 rpm and the car driven out real hard with shifts thrown short at 5000-5200 rpm. The final two passes netted us 13.59-no mph and 13.40- 108 time slips, which we thought was just unreal for a streetstocker running 3.90 gears and a stock hydraulic lifter camshaft. By playing it super sharp on the lights, we managed to put down a whole flock of machines, in- cluding a 375-hp Camaro, but eventu- ally fell prey to a 12.80-second-112 mph Z-16 Chevelle. We made a few more passes after the trophy runs but were not able to better the 13.40-108 time slip. The roughest part of the day was convincing the crowds that the car was an auto trans model and not a manual. The Royal reworked Turbo-Hydro bangs off pow- er shifts like a manual box because of a reworked valve body, increased line pressures and some super-secret re- placement parts. It's available from Royal Pontiac on special order . AlI runs were made with the air cleaner assembly in place and with a fresh set of Champion J-10- Y plugs. No oil was consumed during the day's running. The pipes were bolted up to the Doug headers and we drove 50 miles back home. No trophy, but satis- faction plus! Re: Royal and Motion
Have a copy of a Phase III Productions (Baldwin Motion) Catalog and tuneup/information book produced in 1969/1970. Called Top Cat Kit and could be purchased mail order from them. Book was $4.95 back then. It has an update from '69 to '70 and has a RA V article. You can get that article from JeffH here. It has specs for all the cars and what is the best car/class to run in. It appears to be a similar kit to the Royal Bob Cat kit as it included plugs, thin head gaskest, recurving the dist (or the weights and springs to do so) and carb rebuild information/jets/springs etc. needed to rebuild the carb. It had timing specs. I'm not home now but if interested can get more information in about a week.
Pontiac guys did get into trouble drag racing that car with the MFG plate on it. Have a couple of articles on that too. BTW, there were books that they produced for other makes/models including Ford and Mopar. |

Re: Royal and Motion
Not the gogo most of us think of for those years. I will scan the pages in the Phase III publication for the top cat kit. But, it will have to wait until next weekend as I am not home and won't return until next weekend.

Re: Royal and Motion
Copo, I could kill myself for this but my families old dealership had a few of that Bobcat kit in the parts department. I got them.
I burned the last one on a 78 TA in 83, I feel like and idiot now for doing it. But back then I had no clue what it was, or more precisely what it would mean to me having them intact today. JLP.. where is the RAV article you mentioned? |
