Looks like he wanted to be a PIMP when he grew up!

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
I think he met Timothy Leary.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
When the 67 Camaros were first shown to the public, one of the cars on display had some sort of checker board design on the vinyl top. Not as wild as this GB car.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
This would be the perfect set of wheels for "The Ladies Man", that dude on Saturday Night Live.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
Just giving the customer what they wanted... Look at some of his other work... What's interesting is he didn't alter the body like he so typically did.

I'm with you. I think George Barris was highly overrated. His brother Sam was actually the better designer and builder according to all the custom car gurus and what most people don't realize is Sam actually built/designed most of the "milestone" early Barris cars for George. Sam was an employee of George. I believe when Sam passed away at a young age, the Camaro above is what we are left with from George. I saw some Mustangs he did that were equally hideous. Woodgrain on the side and round opera windows in the rear pillars ala thunderbird. I shiver to this day at their sight. |
Re: Custom 67 Camaro
Didnt Ford actually have a production car they called the "Mod Maverick"? or was it "Mod Pinto"? Had flowers on the vinyl top.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
MoPar had Mod tops too...very rare...for good reason.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
That was the "Mean Mavrick". It was a 2 door car with a V8 and a 4 speed if I recall correctly.

Re: Custom 67 Camaro
Sam passed away in '67 but had left the business long before that. He worked as a Fireman and at one point was elected as Fire Commissioner in Northern CA prior to his passing. Both brothers had/have a ton of talent. From talking to people that worked with them the Barris shop had a way of providing the customer their vision. If you look at a lot of what was done in the '60's and '70's custom car world, the '67 camaro here is really in line with the times. As hidious as we find some of it today it's what was cool in the past. Look at the comments here and look at what modern lowriders do. I wonder if they got their start from cars like this camaro...
