Another Harrell '69....anyone know anything about this car? Driver was Ray Sullins.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
I think so. It ran AHRA with light wt front end parts including some home made RS parts
Ken "little Hoss" can maybe tell more about it |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
they were always changing the race cars somtimes they would change parts to run different class on the same day. In the second pic the ZL1 is running what looks like Grumpy's old 67 after he sold it.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
The Ray Sullins car is the ZL1 #1 car. Herb Fox, Sullins and Harrell drove the car. Hayter put the R/S front end on to save the weight of the headlites and so forth, when he ran the car.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Mahalo, I found a 1 page article about him but it didnt state which # ZL1 he drove.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
I do think?? Herb Fox and Ray Sullins drove the car around the same time. I don't think that Harrell was an everyday driver. Sam

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Jeff, the car your talking about is the # 1 car of Porterfields . Herb started out driving the car, then Ray and then Jim Hayter. Jim & Fred were crowned the AHRA world champions Oct 1st 1971 when they beat "Wee Haul" camaro in the finals. Jim also had a 69 camaro before he moved to LaHarp in March 70 or 71 He also had a 69 later which was Hayter&Wright car. I think this is correct. If i am wrong please let me know. Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Kim the "We Haul" car that they beat would that have been the cars that were sponsered by Van Senus Auto Parts in Hammond IN raced by Joe Statmary? Was the car that the LaHarpe Camp beat a first Gen Camaro or second gen? ChrisS a member here and I have done research on this group. Just curious.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Frank I don't know which car they beat It could have been either one??? This was in 1971 so the 2nd gen cars out.
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
I believe Hayter beat the 71 Satmary car. I think it was the U.S. Nationals at Indy. That would be NHRA. I am not sure if Hayter still had a clutch turbo in the car or not.

Enclosed is a picture of the news paper this was a AHRA race at Fremont Cal. for AHRA pro stock championship they were in second place with 4200 points and Bob Lamback was in first with 4400 points Bob went out in the first round and Gibb & Hayter won the race and the championship.

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Kim, put the paper away. We are talking Camaros here, not Cameros.

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Sorry, just yankin' his chain again. His info is dead-on, it's just that the guy isn't quite right in the head most of the time. He needs a good rattlin' every once in a while and it's been almost five days since I hammered on him! Just ignore me, right Kim?
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Hey Kim, Is this where they raced Satmary to win the points, or did they race him at Indy? I thought they beat We-Haul at Indy also. Thanks, Sam
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Kim, I have a national dragster with Diamond Racing Engines add. Says Hayter and Gibb win at Fremont with 9.63 142.00 AHRA. Maybe you are right just AHRA. I know for sure Satmary ran NHRA, I used to see him at Englishtown. BTW you and your buddy should bring that B/S nova in to run the Dutch Classics at Maple Grove Raceway in Oct. They have mine shaft conditions there in Oct. Your car might run in the 10.30's. Not crowded, just GREAT racing! Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
I think this was Hayters car. Maybe he ran his car in NHRA and Gibb's car in AHRA. I believe Hayter went to a Vega after this or a Hemi, I forget. sam
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
The 69 in that picture is his car before driving for Gibb I have that magazine. I bought it new that's how old I am.
Sad part is I watched the 69 race at Beardtown in 69 and watched it race at Eddyville Ia in the 80's and finding out later after Bill Porterfield bought the car it was the same car!!!!! The article says 1971 season which doesn't make sense in the time line who knows. Kim |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Jim set the AHRA nat record that day He broke Sox&Martins old record.

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
Anyone know what engine block he ran in 71? I read that most guys ran the iron block and some the alu CanAm block.

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
[ QUOTE ]
I know for sure Satmary ran NHRA, I used to see him at Englishtown. [/ QUOTE ] Joe also ran some AHRA tracks because we had him at White Hall a few times with a circuit of SS cars that ran out of the Chicago area. Also pretty sure he ran at the old E. St. Louis track when it was under the direction of Wayne Meinert. That was an AHRA sanctioned strip at the time. Might have run primarily NHRA for points but he definitely frequented AHRA tracks too. |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Most of the info. above is correct, however, I do not think Gibb/Hayter ran NHRA in the 71 season. I may be wrong, so don't quote me.
Hayter beat the 70 1/2 car of Satmary, WE-HAUL, even though Satmary got the hole shot. Gibb/Hayter won both the meet and the series, AHRA S/S World Champion on the final run, at Fremont. Hayter ran a 9.697 to Satmary's 9.762. Hayter won the series with 5500 points. |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
JoeC,
They ran a Diamond built iron block, with iron heads for the 1971 season. |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Ken I agee with you about the 71 season but look at the last paragrah on the magazine about Hayter it says he broke at the 71 winter nats ??

I posted this pic a while back in the vintage Camaro pics thread. My father took this pic at Union Grove, WI in July 1969. On the front fender of the car it says ZL-1. See Attachment

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Frank I remember seeing that pic. zl-1 that's interesting
I love the old pictures. Kim |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Ken, talked to Helen Gibb today and she that they quit racing after that race so Hayter moved on. Also if the Winter Nats held in Jan. of 71 he would have not started driving for Fred until later or that article was written later both time lines would work
|
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Going back to the third post with the picture of the car... Is that Fred Gibb- in the red shirt standing behind the car as it launches? That picture is also on a site with lots of old 70's race car photographs.
How common was it NOT to have a rear spoiler on the ZL1 cars when new? |
