69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

A friend contacted me on Monday that had raced at the Humbolt Co dragway Saturday night the 26th.He said there was a White/black strip 69 Yenko camaro there. He went on to say the car was tubbed back in 69 and had approx 215 miles on it.He said the people that brought it had just purchased the car after 10 years of trying to do so.He did not get a vin and could not reach me on my phone so guess where i'll be this Saturday night!! He went on to say it had a steel 427 in it.Dont know much more at this time but has anyone heard of such a car in the U.S much less anywhere near Iowa? If it's there I will get pictures, vin, tag info.Is there a range in the vins that most Yenkos fall into??
Update when I have more info.

If it is really a Yenko, and is originally White, wouldn't that make it a (<font color="red">*</font>) COPO? I'm being sincere here.

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

First off you guys are the experts here,im pretty new to this Yenko, copo stuff.I have tons of interest and see many, many cars a year out here in Iowa and surrounding states.Trust me there's lots of good stuff to be had although be it,it is alittle rusty around here!
What does the white color have to do with it being a Yenko/copo?Did Don not convert any white cars himself? Fill me in alittle so I am a little more prepared to converse with this guy.
Maybe this car is another clone and he's got all the locals fooled with his story and car,,,maybe not.I dont want to show a bunch of interest in a fake car and make the guy feel like im another shmuck and make his day while he's the actual wanabe.

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

By coincidence I just got home from Iowa about an hour ago, dont let the corn fields fool anyone, many rare and lost/missing cars are to be found in Iowa. As for the possible Yenko, unless the car has been repainted, which with 200 miles it should'nt be, I would look for the Yenko badging or evidence of being removed. Not to say a fake cant have the badging, but I havent seen a high quality Yenko emblem yet that could pass for the real deal. Maybe I am wrong, anyone know of fake emblems that do pass for real?

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

I don't believe Don Yenko had Dover White as one of the Original colors his sYc Camaros came in.
But Jack Douglass from Hinsdale Il. did,so thus the reference of the (*) asterik COPO Camaro.
This seems to be how the hobby has referenced Jack Douglass's 1969 Yenko appearing COPO camaros.

Rick not the hobby, just this site.

Well it must be spreading, because I talked to a non-SuperCar Registry enthusiast at SC Indy who said,"I saw one of those asterik Camaros".

In any event, I think it ended up as Jack Douglass Yenko*/ Copo , or, Copo/Yenko*, not just "an asterisk Camaro".

The way things have been going in the last few years it should be a Camaro$.

DS, back in the 60s there were stories of a Yenko camaro that ran at ,what they used to call Nitta dragstrip, which is now Humbolt. That car was supposed to be from Cedar Rapids.I always thought that was the Swisher Ia. car that Gary Holub owns. Maybe not! Schonye

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

Schonye Your right on the Humbolt track it's 30 minutes west of me.I went and talked to the friend that spotted it there and he said the car came from out east(recently),like maybe Pennsylvania rumor has it.He told me the owners name and even where they live(exactly)where they live.I will wait to see what Saturday night brings. He said they didnt actaully race it they just ran like 3 runs .He did say it ran in the high 6's (1/8 mile track).I will get the X number off the tag and the last several digits to see what you guys come up with.My buddy did say eveyone at the strip was told it was a "Real Yenko",,,we shall see what we shall see. This is all out of curiosity as the new owners are'nt likely to sell something they have been chasing 10 years! DSYenko,

You don't by chance live in Clarion,IA do you? I lived up there for six months right out of college working for Cargill. I used to go over to Humbolt with Larry Draves and the little drag Vega that he was just getting put together.

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

Frank, Im about 7 miles from the Mexican Border in South Texas-Close Enough for me and about as Mexican as you can get!!! As a kid, I remember seeing a 66 427 Vette Roadster, 66 GT Hi Po Fastback Mustang, and a 72 Mach 1 Coupe-Only made in Mexico by Velasquez-Shelbys' Counterpart and business partner in Mexico-Junked by the side of the road in the raunchy part of town and offered for about $50! Other cars spotted were numerous 69-70 Vettes in various stages of disrepair and one mean 70 LS-6 (Black) that was enroute to Monterrey. No COPOs' to my knowledge in my general area although I have been on wild goose chases for "Mustangs with Cougar Tailights". As time has gone by leads have gotten scarce on anything worth kicking up dust over.

Frank, do you know of any 1980s SS Monte Carlos made in Mexico with 350 and 4 sp? I have read that a few were built.

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

The Hurst shifter handle in the 84 Monte is similar in design to the 69 Camaro Hurst handle, round with the flat area for the Hurst name. As for muscle cars shipped to Mexico, let us not forget the Rally Green 69 Baldwin Motion Camaro that went to the son of the Governer of Mexico.

Re: 69 Yenko camaro drag car spotted??

Matt;
All Hurst shifters installed by GM were round with the flat sides with HURST stamped into them. When speaking with Mr. Campbell about it, he informed me that GM wanted the round stock arms because they were much cheaper to produce compared to the flat stock arms on the OTC shifters. Campbell agreed that the round stock arms were not as good as the flat stock, but that was what GM wanted - so they made them!

DSYenko,
I was at the Cargill during the summer/fall of '93. I was the tall blonde headed kid with the K-State tag on my truck. Kelly had come on as manager that spring, I believe. We all remember what happened with the rain in '93! When you get a chance, tell Larry and Gail "Hi" from Rusty!

I know the owner of that car. It is a COPO, not a Yenko. It was originally orange, has been painted white. It has been a race car all its life, has 220 miles showing on the odometer. All the sheetmetal is original. Ran 10.14 at 131 last weekend.

Hey there, Hemi-boy! I see you decided to "slum it" for a while over here on a Chevy board! Or, are you trying to find out how Terry picked up his MPH on the big end! LOL!

Oh, by the way, you've GOTTA hook me up with this guy! A real COPO still running in the 10s? Doesn't get much better than that! Shoot me a PM when ya get a chance...
