Mystery hubcap - what is it?
I found an interesting Chevy hubcap that I hadn't seen before. I'm curious as to what it is correct for. Does anyone have any idea? Please see the link below.

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Thanks! Was that the only year it is correct for?
I guess I don't see many '61 Impalas around, so that's why I had never seen a cap like that before. Maybe it would be good for some garage wall decorations. |
Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
I believe that is the only year and car it was used on. The SS used the same cap only with a 3 bladed spinner attached.

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Definitely 1961 Chevy full sized only. But not "Impala". It was the optional "accessory full wheel cover". Even the Impalas came stock with the dog dish caps.

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
IT IS AN IMPALA ONLY HUBCAP! YOU COULD GET POVERTY CAPS ON AN IMPALA, BUT YOU COULD NOT GET THAT CAP ON A BELAIR OR BISCAYNE!

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Wow,
Only my 3rd post and already an argument. I'll go to the books tonight and double check. The search for truth goes on...... By the way Don, when you use caps, it looks like you're yelling. Verne. |
Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Yep, ease up on the caps...

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Do I recall a Verne Frantz who was with the NJ Chapter of Late Great Chevies ??? Last I heard they were decoding trim tag codes...I think the cap picteured is a deluxe cap which probably could be had on any full size 61...if you paid extra for it.

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
HEY VERNE, IM NOT TRYING TO ARGUE. I LEAVE THE CAPS LOCKED ON MY COMPUTER,IM NOT GOOD WITH THE KEYBOARD. SORRY IF THATS WHAT YOU THOUGHT. IF YOU CHECK MY OTHER POST YOULL SEE I ALLWAYS USE CAPS. AS FOR THE CAP IMSURE THERE ARE GUYS WHO PUT THOSE CAPS ON BELAIRS,BUT I BELIEVE THEIR IMPALA ONLY CAPS BECAUSE THE FLAGS ARE USED ON IMPALAS ONLY.I DONT THINK THE FLAGS THEY USE IN THE GRILL AND TRUNK ON 348 AND 409 CARS ARE THE SAME........DON

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Thanks guys. I actually have a set of four and won't be using them. I guess if I put them on Ebay now, I'll know how to advertise them.

Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
Allen,
Before you advertise those caps, you might want to consider the following. 1961 Chevrolet Finger Tip Facts (the salesman's book of specs): Regular Equipment section: "Wheel Hub Caps, Bright Metal. Standard on all conventional Chevrolets and Corvair 500 and 700 models" Optional Equipment section: "Wheel covers: Vented. Dealer installed accessory or factory optional accessory (FOA 117) for all conventional Chevrolets. Crossed flags with ""Chevrolet"" above and below stand on black painted background of center of cover" 1961 Passenger Car Specifications book: Regular Equipment section: "Stainless Steel Hub Caps - All Models" RPO & FOA section: Chassis: "Disks, wheel #117 - All Models Dealer Installed section: "Cover, Wheel (disk type) - All models Engineering Specs section: There is a photo of the disk pictured at the beginning of this thread. Under the photo is printed "Accessory Wheel Disk All Models" Best regards, Verne PS: Yes, I am the Project Chairman for our club's Cowl Tag Project and run our Documentation Service for '58-'64 Chevrolets. And there's a photo of my old '62 on our club site: jerseylategreats.com By the way, I don't know much about Pontiacs, but they are my second love. I'd have as many of them in my garage as Chevys if I could afford it. |
Re: Mystery hubcap - what is it?
VerneFrantz,
Looks like it was available on all models including the Impala so it seems everybody had a piece of the puzzle At least we all agreed it was chevrolet ---Saw your car-- ride--380hp? --like the dash-mounted tach--really stands out with the convertible----JoeG-- |
