Re: Where to find vintage license plates
Dan, check your local newstand for a newspaper called "Special Interest Vehicles". It's from the same people who put out the weekly Car Buyers Market paper. It's in the newstands Wednesday or Thursdays. In the back of the paper you should be able to find some ads for guys selling plates. They usually set up shop at an Elks or Lions club and sells plates as well as the stickers. I know there is a guy who lives out on Long Island and another one further north in upper Westchester. Anything better than Ebay. Hope this helps.

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I'm looking for 69 Tennessee tag. I was thinking of finding a tag, and then buying a vanity tag of the same number. Then running the old tag with current sticker. I'm sure I'd have to do some "splaining" if I got pulled over.
I have a pair (consecutive numbers) of 69 Pennsylvania Dealer tags I got off ebay. Thought that would be pretty neat to use on my tribute car for shows. |
Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I think the majority of the states allow you to run "year of make" tags now. For example, if your car was made in '69, and you can find a set of '69 plates, then you can register them (if that license # isn't taken of course) as a classic car. And, I believe some states give special breaks like lengthening the inspection time and such. DEFINITELY worth checking into...

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
MosportGreen66,
Just curious---I went to that site, there is a N.Y.1966 lic plate[also used in 67/68/69/70/71/72/73/[used different stick-on date tags]--I looked at a photo of my car in early '70 it looks the same---no big deal, but for my own education what am I missing??--JoeG |
Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I thought that the plate used in 1966 were not the same as the plates used in 1969. I saw a '69 Camaro with vintage looking plates (from NY) and they were not the same. I guess they were not original plates? Thanks.

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
Dan,
Sometines a state will have an annual sticker on passenger car tags for the year you want. But other "special" tags will be stamped for the year. For example, in 69, Pennsylvania used a sticker for pass cars, but dealer tags were stamped "69" Same is true for Tennessee for 69, sticker only. However I have seen dealer and volunteer fireman tags that were stamped "69" For Tennessee, you can run any tag number during parades and shows, etc, as long as that "extra license" is registered with the state. For other times, you must run the regular license as shown on your registration. You cannot register a vintage tag and run it as your normal tag. However, I figured I could get away with it if I found a 69 tag, registered that same number as my vanity number, and put a current registration sticker on it. I figured I'd keep the new tag in the trunk "just in case" |
Re: Where to find vintage license plates
Dan and Joe, from 1966 to 1972, NY used the blue background with orange lettering plates. There are different variations of the blue background (some appear darker whereas some appear lighter). As long as you have the correct plate (i.e. blue background w/orange letters) and your sticker tag matches the year your car was produced, you can use it.

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I own a Historic plate company that make delaware license plates. I have had many dealings with license plate collectors. Your best bet would be Dave Lincoln in Kennett Square, pa. 610-444-4144
good luck |

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I have about 5 Manufacturer plates available from the sixties, some single, some pairs, all Michigan except for a single 68 Black California plate. Without looking I cant remember the years right off, I think 62, 65, 66, 68, and another I am not sure on year. Some are perfectly restored, others are near mint original. M plates are very difficult to find, much rarer then dealer, really adds a touch of class to your car. I will post later today with exact years, condition, prices, etc., if anyone is interested.

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
I had some success at some of the plate collector sites that have classified ads. I think one is PL8s.com (been over a year since I use one).
I picked up a few 1970 Virginia plates after posing a wanted ad. Be careful of the email address you use. Spammers tend to cruise these boards for email addresses. |
Re: Where to find vintage license plates
Try Europlates.com in Florida. They can make you anything you need. I had them do both a set of 69 Ohio plates and the vintage UK plates I need for my car.

Re: Where to find vintage license plates

Re: Where to find vintage license plates
Sorry, gave you the wrong URL. Should be -- Eurosign Metalwerke
I'm very happy with the plates I received from them. My uncle also had an Olds manufacturer's plate made for his '70 W-31 that he is happy with. They can't do registration stickers. I ended up doing the eBay route for a set of clean '69 Ohio plates for that... |
