Re: York 30 Show
WOW,What a SHOW!!!! Brian Henderson says every year that this is the SHOW for the East Coast and he ain't lying!!! The BOYZ of Latrobe always set the bar for others to achieve and my GOD, Joe's DICK HARRELL Camaro was nothing but F%#@ING INCREDIBLE. And boy did it have a SWEET neighbor. Frank Arone's AWESOME COPO Camaro. But I would say my highlight to the Show was Frank's son Caleb. His son has such a talent that goes beyond words. Aside from his father,Caleb's idol is Ed "BIG DADDY" Roth and boy can he draw the most amazing pictures. So to my surprise I arrive at the Show to be handed a picture that Caleb drew for me with me coming out of the roof of a 69 Yenko camaro with my Yenko earing and yenko tatoo, doing a BIG FAT BURNOUT.It was also great to talk with Ed Hedrick for a couple of hours about the GOOD OL RACE days of the past. I can't wait for next years SHOW. I could go on and on , but you guys that missed it this year should make a point to attend next years."MOF"

Re: York 30 Show
The Mayor is right...York was a great show, great cars, great facility, great turnout, and great people. Perhaps a future east coast Supercar Reunion should be considered, might draw some new cars out of hiding and the "Back Easties" seem to really embrace this kind of thing.

Just curious...did a certain '68 funny car show out while loading or unloading? Knowing it's owner, I'd be surprised if it didn't...

Re: York 30 Show
I would like to thank everyone that attended the show on behalf of the Supercar Registry. The cars that were part of this years group were very special. One thing that was a definite highlight was Cackle Fest. About every three hours the East wing would fire up Bill Stiles Hemi race cuda'. BUT on the West wing the job was done with Tom Clary's new 68' Dick Harrell/Courtesy Funny Car. That car is LOUD inside a building!.. It would bring the crowd to a roar after each and every run. I still can't believe they let us do that. Joe was the seat man for the firing. I even had a turn. What a rush. As a group, the Supercar Registry won the best Musclecar Award. The judges told me that they could not pick a winner from our group. So the entire Registry was awarded the trophy. It is in transit to Alton MO. It will be on display at the reunion. Next years event will be in the new York Fairground building that is even bigger than the old one. We will once again be invited to take part in this event. Anyone interested in next years event should contact me early to reserve a slot. Thanks again to all the people that made this years event...BKH

Finally, to add to the debate over firewall chalk marks and colors: This Daytona Yellow RS '69 Z was marked on the firewall with R Y E L (part of the Y is obscured in this photo). Probably for RS and yellow? The car had a black and white houndstooth interior (not yellow houndstooth). Also the owner said he found an "80" (probably for D80) chalked elsewhere on the firewall.

Re: York 30 Show
Hi Sam: Those are some great shots. That was an unusual color for a Jenkins Competition team car! Over the years most of their cars were white except that Chevy II that Bill Jenkins ran with great success. In 1969 Bill Jenkins, Dave Strickler and Albert Olster each had a white Camaro. Though it was Dave Strickler who ran the only small block Z/28 in the group. Albert Olster got off to a very slow start in 1969 because his COPO Camaro took 4 months to arrive after he placed the order in November 1968! Thanks.

Drag racing legend Bill Grumpy Jenkins. When I was in high school we spent a lot of time talking about him and reading anything we could find about him in the magazines.

Found an old picture of Bill with his 67 Camaro when he won the NHRA all star super stock circuit emblem
I tried to make Grumpy smile. When I asked him to autographed this picture I asked him if he ever did any professional modeling. He just grunted but I think it was a happy grunt. |
Re: York 30 Show
Joe G, it was definitely a Firestone Wide Oval, you can even see the "wide oval" text in the top of the pic if you look closely, and obviously we're looking at the backside of the tire here. I've seen a few of these in original vintage pics, for example on a 69 Camaro pace car in Valerie Harrell's photo album, the letters on the front side are very small, almost like a Goodyear Polyglas or Wide Tread GT, not the large WIDE O OVAL lettering we see on today's repos. I think the repo versions are based on a 1970 model Firestone, any real vintage 69's I've seen have been completely different, with the small white lettering and "Deluxe Champion" text. Just neat to get a chance to see the real deal in person, thought it was worthy of photographing. Survivor cars are always the most interesting IMO. I also took a few close ups of the original vinyl top seams, and tried my best to get a pic of the original PPG glass markings. I'd be happy to e-mail those to anyone who's interested.

Re: York 30 Show
Supercar Kid,
I had Firestone wide-ovals up front on my '69 Chevelle --it did have the small white lettering --just didn't remember it saying Deluxe Champion--I guess like you said, it's on the backside of the tire and back then looking at the backside of the tire wasn't on the top of my things to do list- If I think real hard it becomes vaguely familiar, but then again ,if I think real hard I get a headache--Thanks for saving me from a headache---JoeG |

You should have been wearing a SOX & MARTIN shirt when you ask Bill "GRUMBY" Jenkins for his autograph---that would have made him at least smirk ---JoeG-- |
