1970 LS5 Convertible
 

1970 LS5,4 speed, A/C, 3.31 posi rear, Buckets, Console,ZL2 Cowl Induction, Power top, power steering. Was frame off restored circa 1988 and only driven a few thousand miles.

California Built Chevelle, Red, black top, black interior, black stripes (not original color combo and engine numbers do not match, no build sheet and no protecto plate).

This car was sold at a Kruse Auction in 1989 as an authentic LS5 M22 Super Sport Chevelle, but there is currently no other paper documentation.

I do believe this to be a true LS5 M22 Super Sport Chevelle.

I recently sold my ls5 convertible w factory air and a factory M22..It also had a 331 rear,which may have even come as a one legger non posi i believe.....protecto plate,owner history,dealer invoice and order form....

Wow!!

$56K with the wrong motor and non-original color??? Is the market that good for Chevelles? Stefano, I'm not knocking you or the car. I'm just curious as to whether convertible Chevelles trade hands for that amount of $$$.

I was under the impression that the M22 was only available with the solid lifter motors. Did that change in 1970 or is just the Camaros that you could only get the M22 with the solid lifter engines? [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] I think I learn something new each day, and I guess that's a good thing.

Jeff, the m22 was an rpo so it could be ordered with just about any engine(I am sure there is an exception). I have seen them in several LS-5's and L35 & L34's in camaros and chevelles.

The M22 was available behind the LS-5 in 1970 as was the 3:31 posi along with it. I have several build sheets with this option. Another member here also owns an LS-6, M22, 3:31 car as well as the same in an LS-5.

Weren't all LS6's with a 4speed the M22, fine spline version? I thought the same was true of the LS5's, but not sure.

M22 was option on solid lifter only 1969,and on solid lifter and ls5 in 70 ..396/325 or 350hp cars did NOT come w m22s,ever......at least from the factory...

Yes Marlin that is correct. The LS-6 could only be had with the M22 and all were coded WO on the build sheet. When the LS-5 used the M22, it too was WO coded.

The rear end appears original to the car and is date coded correct as well as coded for a 3.31 posi. I'll dig the code and dates up later. If memory serves the tube stamp date was late 1969. The Floor and trunk pans are also original as the 4 speed tunnel appears to be.

There are a few inncorrect/replacement items and inncorrectly plated/painted but over all it is a very good value compared to what the others have recently sold for.

The vin is 136670L166156.

I have seen well over 15 purported 1970 LS5 Convertibles in the past 6 months. Of those I saw only 5 were the real deal IMO, and only two of those were 4 speeds with A/C.

It really stands out like a sore thumb as that is the way it was done back in late 1980s when it was restored. New/plated booster and master are in the works.

I ordered an M22 in a 1968 Olds W-30, maybe olds was different than chevy because the olds came only with hydraulic lifters?

I don't have any history prior to 1988, but it has been here in the Suburbs Ever since as far as I know.
