Top 10 Sleepers
I stumbled across this article when looking through old Super Chevy magazines. April 1994 to be exact! This is what they listed as Chevy's Top 10 Public Enemy Street Sleepers Of All Time. This is the order listed in no particular order. You can arrange them in the order you think best. Any suggestions how these ultimate sleepers rank?
1966 Biscayne 427 L72 427/425hp 1957 Chevy 283 2X4 283/270hp 1966 El Camino 396 L34 396/360hp 1966 Chevy II(they called it a Nova) L-79 327/350hp 1959-61 Bel Air 348(345-335-350hp) 1969 C.O.P.O. Camaro L72 427/425hp 1969 Nova SS396 L78 396/375hp 1965 Corvair Corsa Turbocharged 164/180hp 1965 Chevelle L79 327/350hp 1962 Bel Air 409/409hp Runner Ups: 1970-71 Monte Carlo SS-454/360hp 1974 Laguna S-3 454/235hp 1973 El Camino 454/245hp 1970 Impala 454/390hp And to think that I had a chance not once but twice to buy 1966 Chevy II L-79 cars! I'm no Impala expert but maybe I could help. Best to contact Rick SS427 on this site. He's into the big cars but I'll sure give it a try if nothing else. Come on SS427, I'll need your help. Ron |
Re: Top 10 Sleepers
L78 Impala:
I did notice there were TWO Novas on that list. Somebody must have been impartial to Big Cars and Novas! Ron |

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Richard (Impala427),
Thanks for filling out your profile. I can help on some stuff but you may want to do it off line through e-mail as this is a SuperCar site and unfortunately, we do not own any. |
Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Ron, I almost hate to admit it...but I kind of like those little Novas. Lite weight and go fast.
More of a sleeper than the Camaro. |
Re: Top 10 Sleepers
I don't what the weight difference is but I think our L79 is quicker than the Deuce. It is sure a blast to drive. We have been fortunate with the weather this week and when I get home from work have asked the wife if she didn't need something from the store just so I could take the Nova out for a blast through town. Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Actually, it never rains out here in the Pacific Northwest. Today, it's 85 degrees and sunny out by my pool. All that stuff about clouds and rain -- we say that to keep the tourists away

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
All those solid lifter big block Chevies are only sleepers if the guy beside you is deaf. An L79 might fool some, especially the '68 L79 Chevelle Malibu with the cast iron intake and Q'Jet. Even a look under the hood could deceive.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
The car that was like Jake LaMotta Raging Bull (`I coulda been a contender') was the 1962 Chevy II (Nova). Chevy had Bill Thomas design a kit to install a V8 and made the kit available over the service counter. Bill Thomas built a demo with a 360 hp Fuel Injected 327 and 4 speed. This car could have been the grand daddy of the Muscle car before the GTO was ever made if Chevy built it instead of just made the kit. Would easily have been a 13 sec car with a decent set of rear tires. My have not stopped too well though.

I second you on the brakes. I have one of those 1st generation cars and mine is a handful to stop and it's just got the original 6 cyl in it!! Ron |
Re: Top 10 Sleepers
A friend put a ZZ4 350 engine (rated 355 hp)into a 65 two-door post Chevy II. The stock ZZ4 twisted the unibody up like a pretzel until we welded in some frame rails. I bet that kit 327 did the same thing! Now his car runs low 12's with headers, drag radials and a HOT cam kit..

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
I especially like the yellow '66 that Kyle and Stacy Tucker (Detroit Speed) built, it was at the '02 Bristol Bash, seems like it took runner up for best in show. Charley probably knows this car.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
How about this for a sleeper.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Like Keith posted about being deaf. You'd have to be blind to miss those flags on the front fender.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Most guys old enough to know what this is are going blind and deaf, HUH?

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Everytime I see the fifty fastest or the list posted here I wonder why the 69 Nova was chosen over the 68 Chevy II nova. They both had the same drivetrain(as far as the 396/375 models anyway). why did they choose the second year for the list? Just curious.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Nice car....I always like that Supersport script on the rocker...

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
The 50 fastest list from the September 2001 MCR has a 68 Nova at the top of the list. The numbers came from the pure stock drags. I think that earlier lists came from old magaine road tests, which were pretty inconsistent. For example, November 68 Pop Hotrodding had a 68 L-78 Nova run 14.26, while September 68 Car Craft had a similar car run 15.20. Later, Hot Rod ran a 13.87 with their 69 L-78 Nova. So if you made a list with that old road test data, the 69 looks faster, but there was probably no real difference.

Re: Top 10 Sleepers
Thanks BBDON and BELAIR62. I like the 68's since they have so many one year parts on them. I also like sticking the key in the dash instead of the column!
