After many emails and visits on the phone, I was elated to finally meet Kevin last weekend at Barrett-Jackson. A true lover of muscle cars and a real down to earth guy.And while there I kept looking for Kevin Hand , but never saw a red wagon being pulled around. Guess he sold all the shirts.

Hi Souperhigh-Maurice, it was a great meeting you in person too. Never did get to talk cars with you again though, too many people.

Bob, only problem was that I went away from B/J empty handed. I think it is a good place to sell a car, but much harder place to buy one at the right price. I may have still been in the running on the "Lawman" if it weren't a rushed atmosphere and not having the time to think it out.

Belair62 01-23-2003 04:09 AM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Looked like they were about ready to follow you and drag you back to keep bidding ! They said Lawman would not start.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Barrett-Jackson was the first Auto auction that I have witnessed. If it wasn't for the Speed Channel I would not have seen it. Understanding that they have 800 cars to go though, I was very surprised to see the cars rolling off the stage as they were still being bid on. In a rushed atmosphere like that you could end up making a decision that is not the best. As Supercars stated, It is a good place to sell with bargains hard to find, although I'm sure some did.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Probably a very good ploy to get people to bid thinking the car is going away.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

I have found that on Thurs and early Fri there are a few decent buys. The fever really kicks in Fri night and carries through. I bought our truck (#77) about 1:30 Thurs. and after getting it home and even more closely scrutinizing it believe it would cost more to restore an existing truck than I paid for this one ($21600 with commission). Everything about it was very well done. I have learned a couple of things attending many auctions. A lot of cars are prepped for the purpose of selling at auction and after close inspection are not as nice as originally believed. Also people tend to forget that there is an 8% buyers commission!! I heard a rumor that sellers were allowed to buy their cars back at a fee of $500 which would explain the large number of "no reserve" cars. NOTE I said rumor, anyone have any knowledge? Kevin, wish we had had more time to talk. Jim

There are some pretty good pictures on the Barrett Jackson website. My daughter-in-law currently has my digital camera but hopefully I can post some later. It drives better than new and that 383 with the 3" Borla exhaust is awesome! Naturally the tonneau cover had to come off first!! Jim ! Jim,
Buy Backs are common,it costs 16% if you opt. to by back a no reserve car and more on a reserve car at the recent B/J sale in Scottsdale.

B/J is not a place to expect buy back deals as there are more cars available for the spots than the spots to fill them.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Stephano, I believe you but it is just hard for me to see how anyone could sleep knowing they have a $100k car going at no reserve and that it will cost an extra 8% to cover the risk!! To top it off I think that something like 80% of the cars there were no reserve Jim

NW, Your last statement shows the success of, and the confidence that people put into BJ.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

I was wondering why so many cars were being sold with no reserve. It does seem like there is some underlying reason. Not to take anything away from BJ, but I was surprised to see that many no reserve cars.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

A nice thing this year was the credit for your bidder fee against the purchase. I was able to use the "honey, look at the new dress I bought,I saved $40" line. Honey, by buying the truck I got back the $300 bidder fee!! Jim

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

I am some what confused with the buy backs on the no reserves. Do you get to refuse to take the winning bid and pay the fee to keep your car or do you bid to win on your own car and then pay the fee?

SuperCars 01-23-2003 09:36 PM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

The seller-owner would have to out bid other bidders and be winning bidder. Then pays the seller commision of 8% and the buyer commission of 8%. He would be out 16% and keep his car. I understand that is what the owner of the Purple RT Hemi did and he is out $25,000 buying his own car.

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 01-23-2003 09:42 PM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

So, does that mean that the car was currently bid to approx. $150k? If so, then he now has to get at least $175k, wonder what his mental reserve was?

Funny I think I saw Kevin and Sixtiesmuscle with Ragena at Vettefest a couple years ago.

SuperCars 01-23-2003 09:52 PM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Marlin, I can't remember the exact amount of the RT Hemi's bid, but it's listed in the auction results as $183,280 which includes the 8% buyer premium, which says the actual bid was about $170,000. Add the 8% seller plus 8% buyer commission and he has now paid more like $26,500 in commissions. I think this would say he has to make a non-commission sale at $190,000 to $200,000 to come out the same as if he would've let it get sold at B/J.

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

I heard at B/J that the Owner of the 1968 Chevelle SS Convertible with L-89 Al. head option had to buy his Chevelle back as well. The cars authenticity was in question, and he did not have a reserve on it.He did not want to sell it for the price it would have ended at.He paid 12K to show his car there and left with it.

69rsz28 01-23-2003 11:39 PM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

I think I would feel a little sick paying $25k to keep my own car. Bidding on your car to get the price higher doesn't seem right either. IMO there should be a Reserve, or if it's No Reserve, be prepared for the worst. I always use a reserve on my Ebay auctions on the items I don't want to give away! Just my opinion.

CWilliams 01-24-2003 12:45 AM

Re: Kevin Suydam Collection

Then why not just put a reserve on it?
