70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

I have a hunch that someone on this board is the proud new owner of a 70 1/2 Z28 Camaro that was originally sold at Nickey Chevrolet I loked at this car with a friend on Saturday afternoon. In need of some resto, but basically a great car. Very well documented. I will now shut up to (hopefully) let the new owner divulge more details

What did you think of the vintage Nickey oil change sticker still on the inside of the drivers door?

Bill Pritchard 12-02-2002 04:57 PM

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Neat. At first I got the impression the guy was claiming that the oil change sticker was the only 'documentation' that it was from Nickey! Then later I saw the notebook with the build sheet, order form, bill of sale, yadda yadda. Did you see the tank sticker by looking down behind the license plate/fuel filler door? I guess I missed that, but then I was only looking somewhat casually. I don't think my friend was really serious, more just curious. The interior is in really nice shape Hope everything turns out to be in good shape with the motor

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Bill,
What appears to be the tank sticker can be seen by looking through the drivers side 1/4 pannel. It cannot be seen by looking through the gas filler door.It seems to have been placed very far back and to the left.

It was interesting to see that Nickey Received a Van Nuys Built Camaro.

The origianl sales Tax Form customer copy is signed by Edward Stefani, President.

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

OK, that's interesting how you spied the tank sticker. It wasn't exactly ideal conditions for looking at a car, but I guess it was better than being outside. I agree, it seems kinda unusual for Nickey to receive a car from Van Nuys. As I recall, the car was a March or early April build date, wasn't it? I'm not sure what month they began production on the 2nd gen Camaros, so maybe the Norwood plant wasn't up to speed yet.

What the heck are those wheels that are on the car? Almost looks like the 'wire basket' wheels without the wire basket

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Lets not talk about the Ugly "Pim" style Chrome sopke wheels as they were just put on by the second owner to have something for the car to sit on?

He said that when he got the car from the original owner it actually had SS Cragar Skinnies on the front with the stock Z28 mags and meats, on the back.

Rick,
It helps when the car is less than 15 miles from home, I do know how you enjoy those 12 hour rides.

It's not that I mind the 12 hour drives, it's the 12 hour drive for a car that is not worth the time that I mind. That has happened too many times recently.

Has this car been sold yet?

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

What is your offer?? I hear the new owner wants to upgrade to a Nickey 427 Conversion. He likes the Nickey Script emblems which were used.

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

1970 production was up and running at Norwood by early January. I've seen a BB/SS that had a 01A trim tag build date. I believe there may be December build dates as well. It also had a '69 engine assembly code that I thought was suspicious until recently, when I've seen two early 1970 Corvettes with '69 engine codes.
I think this is the first Calf.-built second gen delivered to a dealer east of the Missisippi that I've heard of.
Stefano, put the Cragars back on. Very time-period correct for cruising Irving Park Rd. or north Harlem Ave. in the 1970s.

Stefano 12-05-2002 08:54 PM

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Chris,
The initial order for the car was written at Nickey Chevrolet on 2/23/70.

The Build sheet shows 33170D in box 7A as the date.
produced, which should be March 31 , 1970 4th Shift.

The Z28 was delivered to the customer on 04/21/1970

It was back in the service department for warranty repairs, headers, dist advance kit, chapman alarm and to reject the carb on 05/05/1970 with 485 miles on the odometer.

Well I guess if you pick up a copy of Classic Auto Trader now and again your bound to find something interesting. I was so tempted to go look at this car. Tried to get my brother interested in it to maybe partner with him. Looked like a nice price and 10 miles from my house. I was kinda confused with the "Numbers Match" but then the next line was "Not stock" (.30 over, Chrome components?)

Stefano/Bill- Was this car a modified Nickey car or just a Z sold thru Nickey?

Stefano - Am I reading in to this right? Did you pick up this car? If so, can I pay admission to come and see it? Or perhaps lunch at Steak N Shake?

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Darren,
It has an over the counter 800 cfm Carb with an Edlebrock Single plane intake, Vortex Magneto, Cal Custom Valve Covers, Headers with Thrush header mufflers,Looks like Crane Gold roller rockers with lock nuts, scattershield but heavy duty clutch setup was removed by the second owner.
Lakewood traction bars, Electric Fuel pump mounted in the trunk , a fuel regulator under the Hood and a Chapman Alarm with hood lock.

The engine pruportedly was never out of the car and the mileage was also to be original at approx. 20,000 miles.

It would appear that most if not all the work was performed by Nickey Chevrolet, but I do not know if any of it was done prior to delivery.

After market tac on the column placed infront of the factory tac and a Hurst T-handle on the original Hurst shifter.

All drive train components are original to the car and numbers matching (Engine, Trans, Rear). Even the water pump and alternator are original.

So yeah ,its Just a 1970 Z28 w/ M22 4.10 posi Ordered,Sold and Serviced by Nickey Chevrolet

All those Fencil/Tufo Sold Deuces had to have someone to play with.

Darren,
It was warm and dry enough to Cruise this past weekend. I figured that I would see a certain Rallye Green Z28 roaming around the neighborhood.

I spent some personal time with the Nickey Z28 and got it running, even put a few miles on it. Talk about a time warp

You won't catch me out until it rains for a couple of days and washes the salt away. Heck, you could have come by and picked me up. Hey, I forgot to ask what color the Nickey is?

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Its Autumn Gold with Saddle interior and White Stripes.

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Stefano,

That's great news to hear that you got it running and on the road The way it looked in that garage it was kinda iffy. I bet it blew a little rust out of those header mufflers

Darren,

I think all the salt is off the roads here today

It cleared up quickly but needs a tune up and carb rebuild.

Whoah! That car is gorgeous! What's it's history? And, as always, more pics would be great...for those of us who can't make it to Vettefest.

Stefano, where can a guy get a license plate like the one in the picture? I know we discussed it on the phone when I ordered the stuff for dad for Christmas but you did not have them available at the time.

Re: 70 1/2 Z28 from Nickey

Some of the history is mentioned at the begining of the thread. The original owner lived and worked close to Nickey Chevrolet and the car was set up to be a street racer.

It also has 4.56 gears which were installed by Nickey.

The second owner bought the car in the late '70s/early '80s.

His Grandfather's store, on Milwaukee Ave in Chicago was across the street from where the car was parked on a daily basis.

The second drove it home, had the clutch changed becuase it was too high pressure/effort parked the car in Mom's heated garage and never drove or moved the car until we pulled it out of the garage over 20 years later?

It is a very serious LT1. The car was restored and painted Red with Black stripes. The L88 style hood and torque thrust D's were installed during the resto as well as a few other minor additions.

It is featured on the current Chevy Vette Fest T-Shirt.
