Resto Question . 69 camaro Gas tank

I just got a new gas tank for the 69 camaro and i was wondering if it should be coated /painted or if it should be left natural metal ...

it looks like its galvanized but i'm not sure.

This is a aftermarket / Canadian part.

Thanks.
JC

Fuel tanks were galvanized and should not be painted or undercoated.

Original tanks had a dull finish; some repros are far too shiny.

William.
I saw on a website once, sorry I cant remember which one though, that had a survior 67 Z28 that the tank was undercoated with the rear wheelwells. Like they started with a rear wheelwell, continued over the tank, then hit the other wheelwheel. I think its on the 67z28 website? Any thoughts? Brent

I've heard that also, primarily concerning LA built cars.

One of the Camaro club magazines had a factory photo of a worker in a pit under the line with a paint wand, possibly applying sound deadener in the wheel wells and driveshaft tunnel. Having spent more time under Camaros than in them I know they weren't very neat about it. I've seen the stuff on driveshafts, axles, exhaust hangers and the fuel tank. But it was overspray, not a deliberate coating.

No one has seen all 700,000 or 1st gens and it is possible some tanks were undercoated. But it was not as we say, a normative practice. All of the original magazine road tests I have with chassis photos show an uncoated fuel tank; same as the many Camaros I have had personal experience with. Our '67 Z/28 was dealer undercoated (ugh) and they didn't do the tank. Wouldn't make much sense as any black surface will absorb heat.

William,
I concur about the GM application, but my experience with the Dealer installed applications is that most covered the tanks.

Thank you William and Sefano, I was curious about this subject and you have answered my question. I have a 69 Norwood coupe that looks as if it was done at the factory and the whole undercarraige including the tank has a thick coating on it. The other car I have didn't have the undercoating but since it was a racecar the tank was missing and i wasnt sure how to do it. Brent

Has anyone else noticed that the repo gas tanks (69 Camaro) have the filler neck too high. Does anyone else make a better fitting tank?

69 L89, Yes I have had the same problem with the fuel tank filler necks being too high and actually touching the bottom of the trunk pan.Is there a good repro tank out there?

Re: Resto Question . 69 camaro Gas tank

If you stick a broom handle down the filler neck and carefully push down, you can locate it wherever you want it. I believe usually you could see the top part of the gas cap with the plate up. Is this correct?

Re: Resto Question . 69 camaro Gas tank

The one i just got is a repro from National Parts Depo and its pretty much centered in the rear opening.

Not to high or low , definitly does not touch the trunk pan area.

I can send a pic if needed.

This tank is a Canadian made part , at least its labeled that way....

I happy with it.

Hope this helps.

Peter,
On mine I can see most of the cap above the plate. How is it suppose to look?

One other thing is the repo gas caps. They don't vent very well or at all. I have bought two of they and both were the same. I guess I'll have to drill a small hole to make it vent.
