New book on Super Stocks from 1955-1969
Found a great new book at Barnes&Noble.
Entitled-"Super Stock-Drag Racing the family sedan" by Larry Davis. A nice 210 page hard cover book covering the super stock , stock and early AF/X cars. Absolute great pictures-most of which I have never seen. Has a lot of Jenkins,Strickler, Harrell, early 409s. Nice text coverage also. |
Re: New book on Super Stocks from 1955-1969
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to check it out. The '62-'67 Super Stock - A/FX era is probably my favorite period in factory hot rods and drag racing.

Just got my copy of the book. WOW. I haven't even started reading and I can already tell its going to be one of my favorites (and I have hundreds of car books). Its worth it just for the pictures, the detailed accurate text is just a bonus. A/FX, Thunderbolts, Z-11's all the way through big block Camaros circa '68/'69. You can find it cheapest at amazon.com, a little more at barnesandnoble.com. Or a full 40 bucks at the store. Get it! You won't be disappointed if you like that era of cars and drag racing.

What a good book!! Even has two of the three '63 Nova Fastbacks built by Bill Thomas. Good stuff on Dick Harrell and the Grump.

Re: New book on Super Stocks from 1955-1969
The book is very good on the early Super Stock Cars and is well worth reading in my opinion. The text only appears to go up to 1968 but he used some pictures into the early 70s. He states that Pro Stock started in 1969 but my other books state that the first Pro Stock race was 1970 ? It was won by Grumpy in his 1968 Camaro with a Alu 427. One thing I thought was funny is the telegram from Chrysler telling all factory A/FX teams to "refrain from doing wheel stands"

Any Chicago area members know Bud Richtor's TENSION II, Chevy II from Elgin, IL. This was before my time. Check out page 117.

I have been reading that book and it is GREAT! The author had some cooperation from Susie Stricker(Dave Strickler's widow, Ammon R. Smith's granddaughter, both of Old Reliable fame) and is friends with Larry Brinkley (Larry owns one of Strickler's '62 Bubbletops). I highly recommend this book. Look for the picture of Strickler's B/FX Impala. I have never seen another photo of it.

The book is awsome. Great color pictures of all the various styles of wheels used during the era.
Check out the Chevelle on page 136 for a view of the original style E T brand wheels. The style looks just like the ones they produce today. |

Hi Marlin,
Thanks for the post, it is nice to have been missed. I lost my best friend to cancer over the holidays and I have been kind of "out of it". I have missed posting and talking with everyone and I am looking foward to posting again now. Andrew |

Andrew;
My sincere condolence's on the loss of your friend, I know how difficult that is. Good to see your back on the board. You probably recognize some of the cars pictured in the Super Stock book, good reading. Will you be at the York US30 show?? M [Edited by YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY (01-31-2002 at 01:16 PM).] |

http://pstr-m05.ygpweb.aol.com/data3...LVaDsY0180.jpg I love this book. I collect & build the old drag cars in 1/18th scale and this book has helped me many a time. Sure wish I could find more color pictures of the old drag stuff. |
Re: New book on Super Stocks from 1955-1969
Boy, that car sure is "something else"...I found out the hard way last year at the strip! I did get a good view of his wheelstand and of his tail lights from the opposite lane, though! I think he ran a low-mid 10? Oh well, at least I treed him!
